I was young. I remember hearing you say something had been returned."

My mother sighed.

"You remember all sorts of things incorrectly."

"I might be remembering it wrong."

"Then why bring it up?"

"Because I want to understand."

She said that I was making myself unhappy by looking for meaning in every little thing.

I told her I was not asking her to agree with my memory.

I was asking whether she remembered the conversation.

She said she did not.

I accepted that answer.

I did not argue.

For the first time, I understood that I did not have to force someone to confirm a memory before I was allowed to record it.

The call ended a few minutes later.

I felt disappointed, but not surprised.

My mother had not given me anything new.

She had also not changed my memory.

I returned to the notebook and wrote down her response beside the original recollection.

I did not add an interpretation.

I did not write that her denial proved she was hiding something.

I simply recorded what had happened.

That became my rule.

When I remembered something, I wrote it down.

When my mother gave an answer, I recorded that too.

When I could not distinguish between a memory and something I had heard afterward, I admitted that uncertainty.

I was determined not to create a new version of the past just because the old one no longer satisfied me.

Over the following days, small details returned.

I remembered a particular evening when my mother had asked me to stay in my room while she answered the door.

I remembered the low murmur of voices.

I remembered that she had told me not to mention the visitor to anyone.

I had been too young to know what was unusual about the request.

Children were often told to stay out of adult conversations.

There was nothing remarkable about that on its own.

What stayed with me was how carefully my mother had watched me afterward.

She had asked whether I had heard anything.

I said no.

She looked at me for a long moment, then told me to forget the visit.

I could not remember seeing the visitor's face.

I could not say whether the person had been connected to the man I was trying to find.

I could not even say with certainty that the memory belonged to the period before his disappearance.

But I remembered the feeling.

I remembered being aware that there was something I was not supposed to know.

That feeling had followed me through childhood.

Now I wondered whether it had been connected to particular events rather than simply to my mother's temper.

I did not want to blame her for every moment of my discomfort.

I wanted to understand which parts of my childhood had been ordinary and which parts had been shaped by the mystery I was now trying to solve.

The distinction was difficult.

I had little evidence, and memory could be unreliable.

Still, the effort of examining it carefully was changing the way I saw myself.

I had spent years believing I was naturally timid.

I had described myself as someone who avoided conflict, someone who needed time to make decisions, someone who preferred to keep things to herself.

Those descriptions were not entirely wrong.

But perhaps they had started as ways to stay safe.

Perhaps I had learned that speaking less meant giving my mother fewer reasons to become upset.

Perhaps I had learned to anticipate anger before it arrived.

I could not know for certain.

I did not need to settle that question immediately.

I only needed to recognize that the habits I carried had a history.

And a history could be examined.

One afternoon, while sorting through the box again, I found another old photograph.

It showed a room I recognized but had not thought about in years.

The furniture was different from what I remembered.

There was a small table near the window and a lamp with a wide shade.

A stack of books sat beside an armchair.

I looked at the photograph for a long time.

I could not remember who had taken it.

But I suddenly recalled sitting on the floor of that room while someone read aloud.

The voice in the memory was calm.

It did not hurry me.

It did not tell me that I was too young to understand.

I could not confidently identify the person.

The memory might have belonged to the man.

It might have belonged to someone else entirely.

That uncertainty frustrated me.

I wanted to place the memory somewhere definite.

I wanted the room to lead me to a name, and the name to lead me to an answer.

Instead, it gave me another fragment.

I put the photograph beside the others.

Then I wrote down what I remembered.

I described the table, the lamp, and the books.

I described the sound of the voice without claiming to know whose it was.

I noted that I had associated the memory with the man only after seeing him again.

That last detail seemed especially important.

A memory could change when a person began searching for an explanation.

I did not want to confuse the feeling of recognition with certainty about the past.

For the next several nights, I worked through my memories a little at a time.

I did not spend every hour doing it.

I still had a life beyond the questions.

I went shopping.

I met someone for a meal.

I completed my work and went to bed at a reasonable hour.

Sometimes I went an entire day without thinking about the mystery.

Those were good days.

They reminded me that searching for the truth did not mean allowing the past to consume everything I had built since then.

I was not a child waiting for someone else to decide what would happen to me.

I was an adult with choices.

I could investigate.

I could stop when I needed rest.

I could change my mind.

And I could decide that understanding the past mattered without making it the only thing that mattered.

That realization brought me a kind of relief.

I had been afraid that once I began questioning my mother's story, I would have to question every part of my life.

But that was not what happened.

Some memories remained clear.

Some relationships remained important.

Some things my mother had done for me were real and meaningful.

I did not have to erase those things to admit that I did not understand her choices.

I could hold two thoughts together.

I could be grateful for what she had given me.

I could also be hurt by what she had refused to explain.

The two feelings did not cancel each other out.

That became especially clear when she called me one evening.

Her voice sounded tired.

She asked whether I had been sleeping properly.

I said I had.

She asked whether work was going well.

I told her it was.

Then she said she did not want us to fight.

I told her I did not want that either.

For a moment, I thought she might say something about the past.

Instead, she told me that she had always done her best.

I believed that she believed it.

I also knew that doing one's best did not automatically make every decision right.

"I know you tried," I said.

She seemed relieved.

Then she added that I needed to trust her.

I looked at the notebook on the table.

Trust had once meant accepting her answers without question.

I could not return to that understanding of it.

"I want to trust you," I said. "But I need to be allowed to understand what happened."

Her breathing changed.

I knew she was upset.

I resisted the urge to take back my words.

She told me that I was making a mistake.

I asked her what mistake she meant.

She said she could not explain it over the phone.

For a moment, I sat perfectly still.

That was the first time she had acknowledged that there might be something to explain.

She did not admit to hiding anything.

She did not say that her previous answers had been false.

But she had given me a sentence that was different from all the others.

I asked whether she would be willing to talk in person.

She said she was not ready.

I told her I would respect that.

I also told her that I would continue looking for answers.

She did not respond immediately.

Then she said she hoped I would remember that she was my mother.

I told her I would.

The call ended without an argument.

I sat quietly for a long time afterward.

I did not know what her words meant.

Perhaps she genuinely believed that she had protected me.

Perhaps there were circumstances she was still afraid to discuss.

Perhaps she had convinced herself that withholding the truth was the kindest choice.

I could not know.

But I no longer needed to decide whether she was a good person or a bad person before I could ask what had happened.

That was not my responsibility.

My responsibility was to be honest about what I knew and what I did not know.

I returned to my notebook.

Under the record of the phone call, I wrote down her exact words as best I could remember them.

I wrote that she had said she was not ready to explain.

I underlined nothing.

I drew no conclusions.

Then I closed the notebook.

For the first time since I had seen the black SUV, I felt that my efforts were leading somewhere.

Not to a final answer.

Not yet.

But to a clearer understanding of what I had to do next.

I needed to find the man.

I needed to hear his account.

And I needed to do it without deciding in advance what he would tell me.

I still had no reliable address.

I still had no way to contact him directly.

But I had stopped believing that my lack of information meant I had no options.

I could begin with the places I knew.

I could look for records I had a legitimate reason to access.

I could ask people who might remember the years before his absence, while respecting their privacy and their right not to get involved.

I did not need to rush.

I needed to keep moving carefully.

That was enough for now.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Finally Understood
