2 – My Mother Had an Answer for Every Question Except the One I Had Finally Found the Courage to Ask

I did not tell my mother about the man immediately.

I wanted to understand what I had seen before I gave her the chance to explain it away.

That was a new feeling for me.

In the past, I had rushed to her whenever something frightened or confused me.

Even when I knew she might become angry, I still wanted her to tell me what things meant.

I had mistaken her certainty for honesty.

Now I wanted to know what she would say when she did not have time to prepare an answer.

So I waited.

I went through my usual routine.

I answered messages.

I finished the work I had to do.

I spoke to people who had no idea that anything was wrong.

From the outside, nothing had changed.

Inside, I kept returning to the same image.

The black SUV.

The silver watch.

The familiar face.

I could still see the moment when our eyes met.

I could still remember how quickly he looked away.

By the second evening, I had begun to question my own memory.

Maybe he had not recognized me.

Maybe I had imagined the significance of his expression.

Maybe I had attached too much meaning to a face I had not seen in years.

That was the trouble with living inside someone else's version of the past.

Eventually, you began doing their work for them.

You questioned yourself before anyone else had to.

You found excuses for the things that hurt you.

You even learned to feel guilty for wanting an explanation.

I had become very good at that.

But I was tired of it.

When I finally spoke to my mother, I did not begin with an accusation.

I asked a simple question.

"Do you ever wonder what happened to him?"

She was busy with something at the time.

I watched her hands pause.

It was only a brief interruption, but I noticed it.

"Who are you talking about?"

She did not look at me.

I gave her the name.

For a moment, the room seemed to grow smaller.

My mother placed the object she was holding on the table.

Then she turned toward me with an expression I had known since childhood.

The expression that warned me I was approaching a subject she had already decided was forbidden.

"Why are you bringing that up now?"

I could have backed down.

I almost did.

Instead, I told her that I had seen him.

Her face changed.

The reaction was so quick that I might have missed it if I had not spent years studying her moods.

She looked startled.

Then suspicious.

Then angry.

All in the space of a few seconds.

"Where?"

I told her.

She asked when.

I answered.

She wanted to know whether I had spoken to him.

I said no.

That seemed to relieve her, although she tried to hide it.

I watched her carefully.

She had not asked whether he looked well.

She had not asked whether he had seemed happy.

She had not even asked whether he had recognized me.

She wanted to know whether we had spoken.

That was the first thing that mattered to her.

"Did he see you?"

"I don't know."

She looked away.

I waited for her to say something else.

Instead, she began explaining why seeing him meant nothing.

People changed.

People moved on.

The world was full of coincidences.

She spoke calmly, as if she were discussing the weather.

I listened without interrupting.

Then she told me I should forget about it.

I had heard those words in different forms for most of my life.

They were always presented as advice.

They were always meant to end the conversation.

This time, I did not let them.

"Why?"

She frowned.

"Why what?"

"Why should I forget about him?"

My mother gave a small, impatient sigh.

"Because there is nothing to gain from looking backward."

I wanted to ask how she could be so certain.

Instead, I asked something else.

"Did he ever try to contact me?"

Her silence was brief.

But it was there.

"I told you what happened."

"No. You told me what you wanted me to believe."

The words came out before I could soften them.

My mother stared at me.

I had challenged her before, of course.

But never like that.

Never without immediately apologizing.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then her face hardened.

She reminded me of everything she had sacrificed.

She reminded me of the difficult years.

She reminded me that she had been the one who stayed.

She spoke about responsibility, loyalty, and the things a child owed the parent who raised them.

I knew those arguments.

I could have repeated them along with her.

For years, they had been enough to make me stop.

But something about them sounded different now.

They were answers to questions I had not asked.

They were debts she kept presenting whenever I wanted the truth.

And I was beginning to see that the two things were not the same.

"I know you raised me," I said.

She seemed surprised by my quiet voice.

"I know you did a lot for me."

I paused.

"But I still want to know what happened."

My mother stood up.

The conversation was over as far as she was concerned.

She moved around the room, straightening things that did not need straightening.

She picked up an item from the table and put it back down.

Then she told me that some matters were complicated.

I asked her to explain.

She said I would not understand.

I reminded her that I was no longer a child.

She answered that getting older did not mean I knew everything.

That was true.

It was also beside the point.

I did not need to know everything.

I needed her to tell me one honest thing.

She refused.

By the time I left, I had learned almost nothing about the man I had seen.

But I had learned something about my mother.

She was afraid of the question.

I could not prove what that fear meant.

It might have been guilt.

It might have been anger.

It might have been something I had not considered.

Still, I knew the difference between someone who did not remember and someone who desperately wanted a subject left alone.

My mother wanted silence.

And I had finally stopped giving it to her automatically.

For the next few days, I thought about whether I should try to find him.

I did not know where to begin.

I had no reliable account of his life after he disappeared from mine.

I did not know whether he had married, moved away, or built the kind of life I had just glimpsed beside the SUV.

I knew only that he was somewhere in the same world as me.

That knowledge was both comforting and cruel.

He had not vanished from the earth.

He had vanished from my life.

Those were two very different things.

I began remembering small details I had once dismissed.

The way certain conversations ended when my mother entered the room.

The way she reacted when someone mentioned the past.

The occasions when I had asked a question and received a warning instead of an answer.

I had never collected those moments together.

I had treated each one as an isolated incident.

Now they seemed connected by something I could not yet name.

I wanted to believe there was a reasonable explanation.

I wanted to believe my mother had made a terrible decision for a good reason.

That possibility still mattered to me.

I did not want to turn my entire childhood into a lie just because I had begun to question it.

But I could no longer pretend that a loving parent had nothing to hide simply because she had provided a home.

Love could be real and still be used to control someone.

That was a difficult thing to accept.

It was even harder because I still loved her.

I had no desire to punish her.

I wanted the truth.

I wanted to know what had happened before I was old enough to understand it.

And I wanted to know whether the man beside the SUV had ever wanted to come back.

A few nights later, I took out an old box of belongings.

I had kept it through several moves without ever examining everything inside.

There were ordinary things in it.

Old papers.

Photographs.

Small objects that had once seemed important and later became too familiar to throw away.

I worked through them slowly.

Every now and then, I stopped at something that brought back a memory.

A birthday.

A room.

A conversation I had forgotten until a single detail returned it to me.

I was not sure what I expected to find.

Perhaps I wanted proof that my memory was not as unreliable as my mother had made me feel.

Perhaps I simply needed to do something with the questions she had left behind.

I did not find an answer that night.

I found more reasons to keep looking.

And for the first time, I did not feel guilty about it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The More I Tried to Remember My Childhood Honestly, the More I Realized How
