Are you free to talk for a few minutes?”

“Yes.”

“I've finished reviewing the document.”

There was a pause.

“All right.”

“I understand it much better now. The explanations helped.”

“I'm glad.”

“But I've decided that I'm not ready to agree to it as it stands.”

The silence that followed was longer than the ones we had shared recently.

I let it remain.

Finally, he said, “So you're saying no?”

I chose my words carefully.

“I'm saying I am not comfortable agreeing to it in its current form.”

“Is that a permanent no?”

“I don't know whether anything will change in the future. But that is my decision today.”

He exhaled.

“I thought we'd made progress.”

“We have.”

“Then why does it feel as if we're back where we started?”

“Because we have made progress in understanding one another, but that doesn't mean we'll reach the same decision.”

He did not answer.

I continued.

“I appreciate the time you spent explaining everything to me. I appreciate Vanessa's willingness to listen. I am not dismissing any of that.”

“But you still don't want to sign.”

“Not as it stands, no.”

He was quiet again.

I could feel the old urge rising inside me.

I wanted to soften the answer.

I wanted to tell him that perhaps I would change my mind next week.

I wanted to promise that we were close to agreement.

But I had no right to promise something I did not know.

So I stayed quiet.

At last, Graham said, “I'm disappointed, Mum.”

“I understand.”

“I really hoped we'd get this settled.”

“I know you did.”

“I don't know what else to say.”

“You don't have to say anything right now.”

His voice softened slightly.

“I don't want you to think I don't respect your decision.”

“I would like to believe you respect it, even if you disagree.”

“I do.”

“Thank you.”

We spoke for a few more minutes.

The conversation was not easy.

It did not end with laughter.

Graham sounded subdued when we said goodbye.

But neither of us raised our voice.

Neither of us accused the other of being selfish.

And I did not withdraw my answer to make the ending more comfortable.

When the call ended, I sat at the table.

My hands were trembling slightly.

I had expected that.

Doing something new did not mean it would immediately feel natural.

I took a sip of water and looked toward the drawer.

The document was inside.

I had not destroyed it.

I had not thrown it away in anger.

I had simply made my decision about what I was willing to agree to.

That distinction mattered.

Later that afternoon, Vanessa sent a message.

She said Graham had told her we had spoken and that she understood I was not ready to agree.

She added that she was sorry if the process had made me feel cornered.

I read the message twice.

Then I replied.

“Thank you for understanding. I know this has not been easy for any of us. I hope we can keep talking honestly.”

She answered a few minutes later.

“I hope so too.”

I put my phone down.

There was no dramatic change in the house.

The kettle still needed filling.

The laundry still needed folding.

The yellow flowers were long gone, and the glass jar was sitting empty beside the sink.

I rinsed it and put it away.

Then I went for a walk.

I passed the bakery and bought a small loaf of bread.

The woman behind the counter asked whether I wanted it sliced.

I told her yes.

She wrapped it carefully and handed it to me.

I thanked her and continued home.

I felt sad.

I wanted Graham to be happy with my decision.

I wanted him to understand why I had made it.

I wanted us to return to the easy closeness we had shared when he was younger.

But I also felt something else.

Relief.

I had stopped waiting for the perfect moment when nobody would be disappointed.

That moment might never come.

I had made a decision based on what I understood and what I felt comfortable accepting.

It was not a decision made against my son.

It was a decision made for myself.

At home, I placed the bread on the counter and opened my notebook.

I wrote down the date.

Then I wrote one final sentence beneath the others.

I can love Graham deeply and still make a decision he does not like.

I put the notebook away.

For the first time since the document had entered my life, I did not feel that I needed to read it again before going to bed.

I knew what I had decided.

Now I would have to learn how to live with the decision without turning it into another argument with myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: A Mother Is Still a Person

The following week, I read the document one final time.
