Have you got a moment?”

“Yes. Is everything all right?”

“Everything is fine. I just wanted to ask whether we could talk about a few remaining questions when you have time.”

He was quiet for a moment.

“About the document?”

“Yes.”

“Of course.”

“I don't want us to go through the whole thing again. There are just a few things I'd like clarified.”

“All right. It does.”

“Do you feel ready to decide?”

I looked at him.

There was no anger in his face.

But I could see that he hoped I would say yes.

“I feel clearer,” I replied. “That isn't quite the same as being ready.”

He lowered his eyes to the folder.

“All right.”

“I know you want this settled.”

“I do.”

“And I want to reach a decision too. But I need to sit with what we've discussed.”

He nodded slowly.

“Take the time you need.”

I felt a quiet gratitude.

“Thank you.”

We put the papers away.

Then Graham asked whether I had anything to eat.

I told him I had made a cake the day before.

He looked delighted.

“Can I have a piece?”

“That's why I made it.”

He laughed.

We ate cake at the kitchen table and talked about his work.

He told me about a colleague who had been trying to grow tomatoes on a balcony that barely received any sunlight.

I told him that plants needed more than good intentions.

He pointed at me.

“That's exactly what I told him.”

“Then perhaps you should listen to your mother more often.”

He laughed again.

For a few minutes, we were simply ourselves.

When he left, he carried the empty folder under his arm.

I stood at the door and watched him walk to his car.

He turned and waved before getting inside.

I waved back.

Then I closed the door and returned to the kitchen.

The cake plate sat on the table.

There were crumbs beside my cup.

I gathered them with my hand and wiped the table clean.

I felt no sudden urge to make a decision.

I felt no need to call Graham and reassure him.

The conversation had been useful.

It had answered some questions.

It had also shown me that we could talk about a difficult subject without allowing it to swallow everything else.

That was progress.

It was not a promise.

And it did not have to be.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: The Decision at My Kitchen Table

On Friday afternoon, I received a message from Vanessa.
