Have you got a minute?”

“Of course.”

She sounded slightly nervous.

“I wanted to ask if you'd like to come over for lunch on Saturday.”

I stopped folding a towel.

“Lunch?”

“Yes. Just the three of us.”

I waited for her to explain.

She did not mention the document.

She did not say they wanted to talk about anything important.

She simply asked whether I was free.

“I think so,” I said. “What time?”

“About twelve-thirty?”

“That would be fine.”

“Good. Graham will be happy.”

I smiled a little.

“I hope you will be too.”

There was a pause.

“I will,” she said. “I really will.”

When we hung up, I put the towel on the pile and thought about the invitation.

I wanted to accept it without becoming suspicious.

That did not mean I had to ignore the past.

It meant I could allow something new to happen without deciding in advance how it would end.

On Saturday morning, I baked a small batch of biscuits.

Vanessa had once mentioned that she liked the kind with a little lemon in them.

I remembered because I had listened when she spoke.

I wrapped the biscuits in a paper-lined tin and tied a ribbon around it.

Then I changed my mind about the ribbon and removed it.

It looked too much like a gift for a special occasion.

This was lunch.

I did not need to make it grand.

When I arrived at their house, Graham opened the door.

“Mum. I may not have understood it properly at the time.”

Her honesty surprised me.

I had grown used to hearing that she and Graham were only trying to help.

This was different.

She was not telling me what her intentions had been.

She was acknowledging how her actions had felt to me.

“I know you weren't trying to hurt me,” I said.

“But that doesn't mean I handled it well.”

“No,” I said gently. “It doesn't.”

She looked down at her plate.

“I have a habit of trying to fix things quickly. When something is unresolved, I want everyone to agree so we can move on.”

“I understand that.”

“But sometimes I push too hard.”

I thought about the weeks I had spent worrying over every phone call.

“Yes,” I said. “Sometimes you do.”

She looked up at me.

I expected her to become defensive.

Instead, she nodded.

“I'm sorry.”

I believed that she meant it.

I did not assume that meant she would never behave impatiently again.

People could be sincere and still have habits they needed to change.

I knew that because I had my own.

“Thank you,” I said.

Graham had been listening quietly.

He cleared his throat.

“I think I do the same thing.”

Vanessa gave him a look.

“You do.”

He smiled.

“I was hoping you'd disagree.”

“I don't want to lie to your mother.”

We laughed again.

Then Graham turned toward me.

“I think I got so focused on getting the document sorted out that I forgot it was your decision.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“That is what I needed you to understand.”

He nodded.

“I do now.”

I wanted to believe him.

More importantly, I wanted to give him the chance to show me.

We finished lunch and moved into the sitting room.

Vanessa brought tea.

Graham put on some music, then changed it when he realized the volume was too high.

We talked about the garden, the weather, and a television program none of us had managed to finish.

I told them about the flowers on my kitchen table.

Vanessa asked what color they were.

“Yellow.”

“That's cheerful.”

“They were the ones the woman at the market recommended.”

“Maybe I'll get some next time.”

I offered to tell her where the stall was.

She took out her phone and wrote down the location.

For a while, the three of us sat together without trying to settle anything.

I felt the difference.

There was room for silence.

There was room for a story that did not lead to advice.

There was room for me to finish a sentence without someone jumping in to explain what I had meant.

When it was time to leave, Graham walked me to the door.

“Thank you for coming.”

“Thank you for lunch.”

He looked at me carefully.

“Are we all right?”

I considered the question.

“We're getting there.”

He nodded slowly.

“I can accept that.”

I touched his arm.

“That's all I need you to do for now.”

He walked me to my car and waited while I put the tin back on the passenger seat.

“You can keep it,” he said.

“I know. I brought it for you.”

He smiled.

“I meant the tin.”

“I know what you meant.”

We both laughed.

On the drive home, I thought about Vanessa's apology.

I thought about Graham admitting that he had become too focused on finishing the paperwork.

Neither conversation had changed the document.

Neither had given me a final answer.

But they had changed something else.

I no longer felt that every disagreement had to become a test of whether I loved my son enough.

I could love him and disagree with him.

I could appreciate Vanessa's effort without pretending that everything she had done was acceptable.

I could enjoy their company without making a promise about the next decision.

At home, I put the empty tin on the kitchen counter.

Then I arranged the yellow flowers in fresh water.

The petals had begun to open wider.

I sat at the table and thought about the words I had heard at lunch.

It was your decision.

That was all I had wanted them to understand.

I had not been trying to punish anyone.

I had not wanted to make the process difficult.

I had simply wanted to be included in a decision that affected me.

Later that evening, Graham called.

He asked whether I had arrived home safely.

I told him I had.

He asked if I had enjoyed lunch.

I said I had enjoyed it very much.

Then he asked whether I had thought any more about the document.

I took a breath.

“I have,” I said. “And I still need more time.”

There was a pause.

“All right, Mum.”

No sigh.

No argument.

No attempt to make me feel guilty.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

“Thank you for understanding.”

“I'll try to keep understanding.”

I smiled.

“That is a good place to start.”

We talked for another few minutes about ordinary things before ending the call.

Afterward, I opened my notebook and wrote a new sentence.

Being understanding does not mean giving up my right to decide.

I underlined it once.

Then I put the notebook away.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: The Answer I Was Not Ready to Give

The invitation came on Tuesday afternoon.
