Did you sleep all right?”

“Quite well, actually.”

“Good.”

I heard a cupboard close on his end of the line.

He seemed to be at home, getting ready for the day.

“How are you feeling after last night?” he asked.

“Fine. Why wouldn't I be?”

“I don't know. I just wanted to check.”

“That is kind of you.”

There was a small silence.

Then he asked whether I had enjoyed dinner.

I told him I had.

I mentioned the conversation about his father and the story about the meeting room.

He laughed again.

“I forgot about that story.”

“I didn't.”

“You never forget anything embarrassing.”

“I forget plenty. I just remember the things that make me laugh.”

We talked for several minutes.

He told me he had a busy morning ahead, and I told him I planned to visit the market.

It was an ordinary phone call.

That was what made it feel important.

He had not called to ask whether I had signed anything.

He had not begun with a question about the document.

He had simply called.

Then, just as I was beginning to think we might finish the conversation without mentioning it, he said, “Have you had any more thoughts about the papers?”

I looked at the kettle.

There it was.

I had known the question would come eventually.

“Yes,” I said. “I've been thinking about them.”

“And?”

“And I still need time.”

He exhaled quietly.

“Okay.”

I waited.

A few weeks earlier, I would have hurried to fill that silence.

I would have explained why I needed more time, listed everything I had already read, and tried to make my answer sound less disappointing.

This time, I let him speak if he wanted to.

After a moment, he said, “I was hoping we'd be closer to finishing.”

“I understand that.”

“I don't want this hanging over us forever.”

“Neither do I.”

He was quiet.

I continued before either of us could mistake my silence for agreement.

“But I don't want to finish it simply because we're tired of talking about it.”

“All right, Mum.”

His voice was restrained, but he did not argue.

“I have to get ready,” he said. “I'll speak to you later.”

“Have a good day.”

“You too.”

When the call ended, I poured hot water into my cup.

I stood at the counter and thought about how easily the conversation might have gone differently.

I could have apologized for taking too long.

I could have promised to make a decision by the weekend.

I could have told him what he wanted to hear just to keep the morning peaceful.

Instead, I had told him the truth.

And the world had not ended.

I took my tea to the table and opened my notebook.

The document was still in the drawer beside it.

I had read it so many times that I knew where the paragraphs began and ended.

I understood more than I had when Graham first placed it in front of me.

But understanding the words was not the same as feeling ready to agree.

I wanted to know that my decision was mine.

Not a reaction to Graham's disappointment.

Not an attempt to make Vanessa comfortable.

Not a reward for one pleasant dinner.

I wanted to be able to look back at the decision months or years later and know that I had taken the time I needed.

After breakfast, I went to the market.

I bought apples, carrots, and a small bunch of flowers.

The woman at the flower stall told me the yellow ones would last longer than the pink ones.

I chose the yellow ones.

At home, I put them in a glass jar and set them on the kitchen table.

The room looked brighter.

I made lunch, listened to the radio, and spent an hour sorting through old photographs.

I found one of Graham standing beside his father in the garden.

His hair was sticking up at the back.

His father had one arm around his shoulder and a ridiculous grin on his face.

I laughed softly.

Then I felt the familiar ache of missing my husband.

For years, he had been the person I turned to when Graham and I disagreed.

He had been patient with both of us.

Sometimes he understood Graham when I could not.

Sometimes he understood me when Graham thought I was being difficult.

I wished I could ask him what he would do now.

But I knew he would not simply tell me to sign the document to make our son happy.

He would have asked whether I understood it.

He would have asked whether I was comfortable with it.

And if I said no, he would have told me that no was an answer too.

I returned the photograph to the box.

That afternoon, I called a friend.

She had known me long enough to recognize when I was trying to make a difficult situation sound smaller than it felt.

“How was dinner?” she asked.

“It was lovely.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

I told her about the meal, the conversation, and Graham's apology.

I told her Vanessa had apologized too.

My friend listened.

When I finished, she said, “That sounds like progress.”

“It does.”

“But?”

I smiled sadly.

“But the document is still there.”

She laughed gently.

“Of course it is. One good dinner doesn't magically make paperwork disappear.”

“I know.”

“Then let the dinner be a good dinner. It doesn't have to solve everything.”

I leaned back in my chair.

That was what I needed to hear.

I had been treating every pleasant moment as though it came with a responsibility to reward the other person.

If Graham was kind, perhaps I should move faster.

If Vanessa apologized, perhaps I should stop asking questions.

If they invited me to dinner, perhaps I should prove that I was willing to cooperate.

But kindness was not a contract.

An apology did not erase my right to think.

And a good evening did not mean I had to give an answer before I was ready.

“I think I'm learning that,” I told my friend.

“Good. You've spent years looking after other people. You can take a little time to look after yourself.”

After we hung up, I went into the sitting room.

I opened the curtains and watered the plant beside the window.

Then I sat down with a book I had been trying to finish for weeks.

I read three chapters without thinking about the document.

That small freedom felt almost unfamiliar.

In the evening, Graham sent a message asking whether I had enjoyed the flowers I bought at the market.

I told him they were yellow and sitting on the kitchen table.

He replied with a smiling face.

It was a small exchange.

There was no argument to settle.

No decision to make.

No need to explain myself.

I put the phone down and finished my book.

The next few days passed quietly.

Graham called once to tell me about a work problem.

He did not mention the papers.

I listened and asked whether he had found a solution.

He told me he had.

I was glad he had called.

I was even more glad that I did not feel obliged to turn the conversation toward the unresolved issue.

On Sunday, I cooked a simple meal and ate by the window.

I thought about the woman I had been a month earlier.

She had believed that if she could only find the right words, Graham would understand everything.

She had thought that if she explained herself carefully enough, no one would be disappointed.

She had spent too many hours trying to arrange her feelings into sentences that would not upset anybody.

I still wanted Graham to understand me.

I still wanted our relationship to feel warm and easy.

But I was beginning to see that I could not control every reaction he had.

I could speak honestly.

I could listen.

I could apologize when I was wrong.

What I could not do was take responsibility for every uncomfortable feeling in the room.

That evening, I opened my notebook again.

I did not add another question about the document.

Instead, I wrote a reminder for myself.

Let a good day be a good day. Do not turn it into a promise you never made.

I closed the notebook and placed it in the drawer.

Then I turned off the kitchen light.

For once, I did not feel that I had to prepare for tomorrow before I was allowed to enjoy today.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: A Place at Their Table

Graham called the next morning.
