Three people sitting at a table, sharing a meal, talking about ordinary things.

It should not have felt like such a difficult decision.

But the last few weeks had taught me that even an ordinary conversation could leave me wondering what I had done wrong.

I wanted to see my son.

I simply did not want to spend another evening feeling that I had to prove I was still worth his time.

On Thursday morning, I called him.

“Is the invitation still open?”

There was a brief pause.

“Of course, Mum.”

“What time?”

“Seven. Vanessa made a reservation.”

“All right. I’ll come.”

His voice sounded lighter.

“I’m glad.”

After we hung up, I stood beside the kitchen counter and looked at the little calendar hanging near the refrigerator.

I had circled the date in blue ink.

It was strange to realize how much effort I had put into preparing for one meal with my own son.

I used to visit Graham without thinking twice.

When he was younger, I would arrive with groceries, leftovers, or something I had baked because I knew he liked it.

I never needed an invitation to feel welcome.

Somewhere along the way, things had changed.

Now I waited for him to ask.

And when he did, I wondered whether I was being invited because he wanted to see me or because he wanted everything between us to become easier.

I did not want to spend the evening searching for hidden meanings.

So I made myself a promise.

I would go.

I would listen.

I would enjoy whatever was good about the evening.

And I would not agree to anything simply because the room became uncomfortable.

That afternoon, I took a shower and chose a dark blue dress from the back of my wardrobe.

It was not new.

I had worn it to a family wedding years earlier, when Graham still reached for my hand whenever we walked through a crowded place.

I looked at myself in the mirror.

There were more lines around my eyes than I remembered.

My hair had become thinner.

But I still recognized the woman looking back at me.

I had spent too many mornings lately examining myself as if I were the problem everyone else was trying to solve.

I straightened my shoulders.

Then I put on my earrings and left the house.

The restaurant was warm and busy.

Soft music played near the bar, and the smell of garlic and fresh bread drifted through the dining room.

I arrived five minutes early.

Vanessa was already there, standing beside a table near the window.

She wore a cream-colored blouse and had her hair tied back neatly.

When she saw me, she smiled.

“You made it.”

“I said I would.”

She gave a small laugh.

“I know. I just meant I’m glad.”

Graham stood when I approached.

He kissed my cheek.

For one brief moment, I remembered him as a little boy coming home from school, his face bright because he had something important to tell me.

Then he pulled out my chair.

“Would you like some water?”

“Water is fine, thank you.”

The table was set for three.

There were folded napkins, small plates, and a candle in a glass holder.

Nothing about it was grand.

That made me feel better.

I had not come for a performance.

I had come to spend time with my family.

We ordered our food.

Vanessa talked about a recipe she had been trying to perfect, and Graham told us about a difficult meeting at work.

I asked questions.

They answered.

For a while, the conversation moved as easily as it had years ago.

I found myself laughing at something Graham said about a colleague who had mistaken one meeting room for another and spent ten minutes wondering why nobody recognized him.

Vanessa laughed too.

It was a small thing.

But I had missed hearing my son laugh without looking at his phone afterward.

When our food arrived, we began eating.

I told them about a neighbor who had planted flowers along the shared fence and accidentally covered the walkway with soil.

Graham shook his head.

“That sounds like something Dad would have done.”

I smiled.

“Your father once tried to repair the garden gate and managed to make it impossible to open.”

“You told me it was broken before he touched it.”

“It was broken differently afterward.”

Graham laughed so hard that he put down his fork.

For a moment, I saw the boy who had once cried because he thought a wounded sparrow would die in our garden.

He had been so tender then.

He had wanted to rescue everything.

I wondered when he had started believing that every difficult thing needed to be controlled.

I did not ask.

Not that evening.

After dinner, Vanessa ordered coffee.

Graham looked across the table at me.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said last week.”

I put down my spoon.

“Which part?”

“About feeling as if you have to prepare for every conversation with me.”

I had not expected him to bring it up.

“I meant what I said.”

“I know.”

He looked down at the tablecloth.

“I didn’t realize it had become like that.”

I wanted to tell him that it had not happened all at once.

It had happened in small moments.

A question answered with a sigh.

A visit that turned into a discussion about what I should do.

A phone call that became uncomfortable as soon as I asked him to explain something twice.

But I did not want to turn the evening into a list of old injuries.

So I chose my words carefully.

“I don't expect every conversation to be perfect, Graham. I just want to feel that I can speak honestly without making you regret calling me.”

He rubbed his thumb against the edge of his cup.

“I’m sorry.”

The words were quiet.

They were not followed by an explanation or a reminder of how busy he was.

I let them sit between us.

“Thank you,” I said.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I’m sorry too.”

I turned toward her.

“For what?”

“For being impatient. I think I wanted everything settled quickly, and I treated your questions like they were getting in the way.”

I studied her face.

She did not look entirely comfortable admitting it.

Neither would I have been, in her position.

“I appreciate you saying that,” I told her.

She nodded.

“I should have given you more room.”

The waiter brought our coffee.

For a while, we talked about lighter things.

Vanessa told me about a friend who had recently moved house.

Graham asked whether I had seen the new shop that had opened near my street.

I told him I had passed it twice but had not gone inside.

“You should go,” he said. “They have some nice things.”

“I might.”

He smiled.

Then he asked whether I had been sleeping well.

I told him the truth.

Some nights were better than others.

He listened without trying to turn my answer into advice.

I noticed that.

I noticed everything that evening, perhaps because I had spent so long waiting for things to go wrong.

When the bill arrived, Graham reached for it.

Vanessa did not object, and neither did I.

Outside, the air was cool.

Cars moved past the restaurant, and the pavement shone beneath the streetlights.

Graham walked me toward my car.

“Thank you for coming, Mum.”

“Thank you for inviting me.”

He put his hands in his coat pockets.

“I’d like to do this again.”

“I would like that too.”

He looked as though he wanted to say something else.

Instead, he asked, “Can I call you tomorrow?”

“You don't need permission to call your mother.”

He smiled faintly.

“I know.”

“Then call me because you want to talk.”

“I will.”

I opened my car door but did not get inside immediately.

There was still something I wanted him to understand.

“Graham?”

“Yes?”

“I had a lovely evening. But it doesn't mean I've changed my mind about the document.”

His expression shifted slightly.

Then he nodded.

“I understand.”

“I hope you do.”

“I do, Mum. I promise.”

I searched his face for irritation.

I found disappointment, perhaps, but not the anger I had feared.

“All right,” I said.

He leaned forward and kissed my cheek again.

“Drive safely.”

I watched him return to Vanessa.

Then I got into my car.

On the way home, I kept thinking about the evening.

It had been good.

Not perfect, not magical, and not enough to erase the things that had hurt me.

But good.

When I reached home, I hung my dress in the wardrobe instead of leaving it over the chair.

I washed my cup and placed it upside down beside the sink.

Then I sat at the kitchen table with the notebook I had been using to record my questions.

I opened it to the page where I had written down my concerns about the document.

Nothing had changed on that page.

The questions were still there.

The uncertainty was still there.

But I felt less afraid of what might happen if I continued asking them.

I wrote one sentence beneath the others.

I can enjoy being close to Graham without surrendering my right to decide.

I read it twice.

Then I closed the notebook.

For the first time in weeks, I went to bed without rehearsing what I might say if my son called.

I let myself remember the laughter at the restaurant.

I let myself be grateful for the apology.

And I allowed the unanswered questions to wait until morning.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Morning After

For two days, I thought about Graham’s invitation.
