If I don't, I want us to be able to discuss that without turning it into a judgment about how much I love you."

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he nodded.

"That's fair."

I hadn't realized how badly I needed to hear that.

I took a sip of tea.

Graham leaned forward.

"I also want to know what you need from me outside of this."

The question made me uncomfortable.

I was so used to asking for very little that I had to think carefully before answering.

I could have said nothing.

I could have told him that I needed nothing at all.

That would have been easy.

It would also have been dishonest.

"I would like you to call because you want to talk to me," I said.

He looked at me.

"Not because there's a document to discuss. Not because something needs to be arranged."

He nodded slowly.

"And I'd like to see you sometimes without feeling that I'm taking you away from something more important."

His face softened.

"Mother, you aren't taking me away from anything."

"Then I need to feel that, too."

He looked down.

I knew it was difficult for him to hear.

It was difficult for me to say.

But I had decided that I wasn't going to turn every important feeling into a polite suggestion.

I wanted him to know what I meant.

After a while, he said, "I can do better."

I believed he could.

I didn't tell him that he had to promise anything.

I didn't ask him to prove it immediately.

I simply nodded.

"That would mean a lot to me."

We sat quietly.

Then Graham asked about the photographs I had been sorting.

I told him I had found one of him in the garden.

He laughed.

"I remember that day."

"You complained about standing still."

"I always complained about standing still."

"Your father nearly gave up."

Graham smiled.

"He never gave up."

I looked at him.

"No," I said. "He didn't."

For a moment, we sat with the memory.

Then Graham asked whether I still had the photograph.

I told him I did.

He asked to see it.

I brought the envelope from the cabinet and took out the picture.

He held it carefully.

His thumb rested along the edge.

"I was so young."

"You were."

He looked at his father in the photograph.

"I wish I could ask him what he would do."

I sat beside him.

"So do I."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, "I suppose we have to work it out ourselves."

I nodded.

"That's what adults do."

He laughed softly.

I smiled.

It was a simple exchange.

But it felt like a step toward something we had both lost sight of.

We were not enemies.

We were not even on opposite sides of every issue.

We were a mother and son trying to talk about something difficult without hurting each other more than necessary.

That afternoon, Graham did not ask me to sign the document.

He did not ask whether I had made a decision.

Instead, he asked whether I would like to have dinner with him and Vanessa the following week.

The question surprised me.

"All three of us?"

"Yes."

I thought about the restaurant on Mother's Day.

I remembered sitting alone at the small table with the candle in the middle.

I remembered watching Graham walk past me without acknowledging me.

I remembered how carefully I had tried to keep my disappointment from becoming visible.

Part of me wanted to say no.

Not because I wanted to punish him.

Because I was afraid of feeling that way again.

But I also knew that if I refused every opportunity to spend time with him, I would be protecting myself from pain at the cost of losing something I still wanted.

I didn't want to make that decision out of fear, either.

"What did you have in mind?" I asked.

He named a place and suggested an evening that worked for him.

I told him I would think about it.

He accepted that without complaint.

That mattered more than I expected.

After a while, he stood to leave.

I walked him to the door.

He kissed my cheek and thanked me for the tea.

I told him the pastries had been too sweet.

He laughed.

"I'll remember that."

"Don't. I'll probably eat them again."

He smiled.

Then he left.

I closed the door and returned to the living room.

The photograph was still on the table.

I picked it up and studied it once more.

The boy in the picture had been eager to please his father.

The man who had visited me that afternoon was trying, in his own imperfect way, to understand his mother.

I didn't know whether he would continue trying.

I hoped he would.

But I no longer wanted to measure the value of our relationship by whether every conversation ended happily.

Sometimes love meant staying in a difficult conversation.

Sometimes it meant giving the other person room to think.

And sometimes it meant accepting that you could not control what happened next.

I put the photograph away.

Then I took out my notebook.

The list of questions about the document was still there.

I read it once more.

Some answers had been added.

Others remained open.

I didn't cross anything out.

I wasn't ready to decide.

But for the first time, I felt that I could take the time I needed without believing that I was risking my son's love.

That was a beginning.

Not an ending.

I closed the notebook and placed it in the drawer.

Then I went into the kitchen to make dinner.

I had flowers to buy again soon.

I had a friend to visit.

I had a shelf that needed another coat of paint.

And somewhere ahead of me was a dinner with my son and his wife.

I didn't know how it would go.

I only knew that, if I went, I would go because I wanted to.

Not because I was afraid of what might happen if I stayed home.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Dinner I Almost Canceled

I didn't hear from Graham for two days.
