We can disagree. That's normal."

He nodded once.

"But when I ask a question and you tell me I'm making things difficult, I feel as though you want me to stop thinking and simply agree."

He looked down at his hands.

"I don't want you to feel that way."

"I know."

He was quiet.

I waited.

Then he asked, "What would make it different?"

The question was so simple that I almost didn't know how to answer it.

I thought about the restaurant.

The paper in his hand.

Vanessa standing beside him.

The way he had looked toward the dining room while I tried to understand why he had brought the document.

I thought about the later visits.

The explanations.

The impatience.

The apologies.

Finally, I said, "Listen to my questions without assuming they mean I don't trust you."

He nodded slowly.

"And give me time to decide without making me feel that I'm disappointing you."

He looked at me.

"I can try."

I believed him.

At least, I believed he wanted to try.

I wasn't expecting him to become a different person overnight.

Neither of us could change years of habits in a few conversations.

But I wanted him to understand that I wasn't asking him to surrender his own judgment.

I was asking him to respect mine.

He picked up his cup and took a drink.

Then he said, "Vanessa thinks you've changed lately."

I felt my shoulders tighten.

"How?"

"She says you seem more defensive."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I asked, "Do you think I have?"

He hesitated.

"I think you're less willing to let things go."

I almost laughed.

It was true.

I was less willing to let things go.

But I wasn't sure that was a bad thing.

For years, I had let things go because I didn't want to upset anyone.

I had let unanswered questions disappear.

I had let disappointment become something I dealt with privately.

I had let Graham believe that a quick apology or a promise to call later was always enough.

Now I was asking him to stay in the conversation.

That was a change.

It wasn't the change Vanessa seemed to fear.

"I suppose I am," I said.

Graham looked surprised.

I continued.

"I've spent a long time telling myself that I shouldn't make a fuss. Sometimes that was sensible. Sometimes it meant I didn't say what I needed to say."

He listened without interrupting.

"I'm trying to do better."

He nodded.

"I didn't realize you felt that way."

"I didn't always realize it myself."

That was the truth.

I had not suddenly discovered that I deserved respect.

I had simply begun to notice how often I had traded my own comfort for somebody else's.

I had called it being patient.

I had called it being understanding.

Sometimes it had been those things.

Sometimes it had been fear.

Graham looked at the flowers that were no longer on the table.

"Do you think Dad would have understood?"

I followed his gaze.

"I think he would have asked us both to sit down and talk."

Graham smiled faintly.

"That sounds like him."

"He wasn't always right."

"No."

"He could be stubborn."

"Very."

We both laughed.

It felt good.

For a moment, I could almost imagine my husband sitting with us, listening to the conversation.

But the room remained quiet except for the clock.

I had to remind myself that memories could comfort us, but they couldn't speak for the people we had lost.

Graham finished his tea.

"I should get going."

I walked him to the door.

Before leaving, he turned back.

"I'm sorry I made you feel as though you couldn't ask questions."

I felt my eyes sting.

I had wanted to hear those words.

I hadn't realized how much.

"Thank you," I said.

He hugged me.

I held him tightly for a moment.

Then he stepped back.

"I'll call you."

I smiled.

"All right."

After he left, I returned to the living room.

I sat in my husband's old chair and let myself cry.

Not loudly.

Not for long.

I cried because I loved my son.

I cried because I missed my husband.

And I cried because I had finally said something I had been afraid to say for years.

I had told Graham that his behavior hurt me.

The world had not ended.

He had not stopped loving me.

He had listened.

That didn't mean every problem was solved.

The document still waited.

The decision still belonged to me.

But something had shifted.

I was no longer convinced that preserving our relationship required me to hide my feelings.

That evening, I took the photograph of Graham and his father from the cabinet.

I looked at it for a while.

Then I placed it back in its usual spot.

I didn't need to keep holding the past in my hands to prove that I loved it.

I could remember the boy Graham had been.

I could love the man he was.

And I could still ask him to treat me fairly.

Those things did not cancel each other out.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: When Graham Finally Asked What I Wanted Instead of Telling Me What Was Practical, I Had to Admit I Was Still Learning How to Answer

The next few days were quieter.
