I trust that you don't want me to suffer. But I still have to understand decisions that affect me."

He sat very still.

For the first time, I wondered whether he had been hearing my questions as something more personal than I intended.

Perhaps he believed I was accusing him of trying to deceive me.

Perhaps every request for clarification sounded like a judgment on his character.

I couldn't know.

But I could explain.

"I'm not saying you're doing something wrong just because I have questions."

He nodded slowly.

"I know."

"Do you?"

He looked at me.

Then he looked away.

"I think I do."

It wasn't a perfect answer.

It was an honest one.

I accepted it.

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then Graham asked whether I had been enjoying my walks.

I told him about the flowers I had bought and how I had arranged them in a jar.

He smiled.

"That sounds like you."

I smiled, too.

It was a small moment.

But it reminded me of the way we used to talk before every conversation became a negotiation.

We spoke about his father.

Graham remembered a time when they had tried to repair something in the house and had ended up making it worse.

I laughed because I remembered it differently.

His father had insisted that the problem was simple.

Graham had followed his instructions.

An hour later, they were both standing in the kitchen looking at a piece of equipment that no longer worked.

My husband had finally admitted that they needed help.

Graham had been delighted.

He had spent the rest of the day telling me that his father didn't know everything after all.

We laughed at the memory.

Then the laughter faded.

Graham looked toward the window.

"Dad would have known how to handle this."

I looked at him.

"Perhaps."

"He was always good at making decisions."

"He was good at thinking things through."

Graham nodded.

I wanted to tell him that his father had also made mistakes.

That he had sometimes been stubborn.

That there had been days when I wished he would listen instead of insisting he already knew the answer.

But I understood what Graham meant.

He missed having someone older to turn to.

I did, too.

There were moments when I wanted my husband back so badly that I could almost imagine him sitting in the next room, reading the newspaper.

I missed his presence.

I missed the ordinary comfort of knowing that someone else had been there for the years we had shared.

But I couldn't use his absence to settle a disagreement with our son.

Graham had to make his own decisions.

So did I.

"Your father would have wanted us to talk honestly," I said.

Graham looked at me.

"I think so."

"And I think he would have wanted me to understand what I was signing."

He didn't argue.

That mattered.

After a while, Graham gathered the papers.

"Do you feel better about it now?"

"I understand more."

He nodded.

"That's good."

"But I'm still not ready to sign."

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

I noticed the disappointment before he spoke.

"I thought we were getting close."

"We may be. I haven't made up my mind."

He looked at the folder.

"How will you know when you're ready?"

"When I've considered everything and I'm comfortable with the decision."

He gave a slow nod.

"All right."

I wasn't sure whether he accepted that answer or simply didn't want to argue again.

I hoped it was the first.

He stood and put the folder under his arm.

At the door, he paused.

"Mother, can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Are you afraid of what will happen if you sign it?"

I considered the question.

"I don't know enough to be afraid of a specific outcome."

He waited.

"But I am afraid of making a decision I don't understand because I'm afraid of disappointing you."

He looked down.

I could see that the answer had reached him.

"I never wanted you to feel that way."

"I know."

I reached for his hand.

He let me hold it.

"I love you, Graham. That isn't the question."

He nodded.

"I love you, too."

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he squeezed my hand and left.

I closed the door and stood in the hallway.

I felt sad.

But the sadness was different from the feeling I had carried out of the restaurant on Mother's Day.

That night, I had felt invisible.

Now I felt that my son had at least begun to see the person sitting across from him.

Whether he could accept her decisions was another matter.

I returned to the living room and placed the empty cups in the kitchen.

The folder was gone.

My notebook remained.

I opened it and looked at the list of questions.

Most had been answered.

A few still required thought.

I didn't cross them out.

I wasn't trying to make the page look finished.

I was trying to make sure I knew where I stood.

Before bed, I put the notebook in the drawer.

Then I checked my phone.

There was a message from Graham.

It said he was glad we had talked.

I read it twice.

I typed a reply, deleted it, and tried again.

In the end, I sent a simple message.

So am I. We'll keep talking.

Then I put the phone away.

For once, I didn't wait to see whether he would respond.

I had said what I meant.

That was enough for the evening.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Thought Our Biggest Problem Was the Document, Until Graham Asked a Question That Revealed What He Had Been Thinking About Me

Graham came over two days later.
