I asked.

"Some additional information."

He placed both items on the table.

I invited him to sit.

He looked around the room, perhaps noticing how carefully I had arranged everything.

"You're ready for me."

"I've been expecting you."

He gave a brief smile.

Then he opened the folder.

"I've gone through the document again, and we've made a few changes."

I reached for the pages.

"May I read them first?"

He nodded.

"Of course."

I began at the first page.

The wording had changed in several places.

I read slowly, comparing the sections with the notes I had made earlier.

When I reached a paragraph that had previously confused me, I stopped.

"This part is different."

"Yes."

"Why?"

He explained that the wording had been revised to make the arrangement clearer.

I read it again.

The explanation made sense as far as it went, but I wanted to know what the change meant in practice.

I asked him.

He answered.

I wrote down the answer.

Then I moved to the next section.

The process took time.

Graham checked his phone once.

I noticed.

He noticed me noticing.

"Sorry," he said. "I was expecting a message."

"That's all right."

I continued reading.

I wasn't going to hurry because he had somewhere else to be.

When I reached the last page, I put the papers down.

"Thank you for bringing the revised version."

He nodded.

"Does it make more sense now?"

"Some of it does."

He waited.

"There are still a few things I need to understand."

His shoulders dropped slightly.

"Of course there are."

The words came out with more frustration than he probably intended.

I looked at him.

He closed his eyes briefly.

"Sorry. I didn't mean that the way it sounded."

I believed that he was sorry.

But I also knew that his frustration was real.

He wanted the discussion to end.

I wanted the discussion to be complete.

Neither of those desires made the other person wrong.

What mattered was what we did with them.

I opened my notebook.

"Let's take the remaining questions one at a time."

He nodded.

We began.

The first question was easy to resolve.

The second required him to refer to the additional information in the envelope.

The third led to a longer discussion.

I listened carefully.

I asked him to explain one point twice.

The second explanation was clearer.

I thanked him.

For a while, the conversation felt productive.

We were not agreeing on everything, but we were making progress.

Then Graham reached for the document.

"At this point, I think you have enough information to decide."

I kept my hand on the edge of the page.

"I have more information than I had before."

"Yes."

"But I still need time to consider it."

He leaned back.

"How much time do you need?"

"I can't tell you yet."

He stared at the papers.

"Mother, we've been dealing with this for weeks."

"I know."

"We've made changes because you had concerns."

"I appreciate that."

"So what else do you need?"

I took a breath.

"I need to decide whether I agree with the arrangement."

He looked at me as if he had been expecting a different answer.

For a moment, I thought he might understand.

Then he said, "I thought we had already settled the important points."

"We've discussed them. That isn't the same as settling them."

He rubbed his forehead.

I could see his patience thinning.

Mine was thinning, too.

I was tired of having the same conversation in different words.

But I remembered the first evening, when he had brought the paper to the restaurant and expected me to accept it without a proper explanation.

I remembered the second visit, when he had treated my questions as an obstacle.

I remembered Vanessa suggesting that worry could make a person suspicious.

I didn't want to return to that position.

I wanted to be able to make a decision without feeling that I had to defend the right to make it.

"Have you read the entire document yourself?" I asked.

He looked surprised.

"Yes."

"Every section?"

"Yes, Mother."

"Did you ask questions about the parts you didn't understand?"

He hesitated.

"I discussed it with Vanessa."

"That wasn't what I asked."

His expression hardened.

"I understand the document."

I nodded slowly.

"Then you understand why I want to be sure I understand it, too."

He looked away.

The room fell silent.

I could hear the clock ticking on the wall.

I thought about the name James.

My husband's middle name.

The name Graham carried, too.

I had always thought of it as a connection between them.

A reminder that even when Graham was grown and living far from us, part of his father remained in the family.

I didn't want to use that memory to judge him.

But I couldn't stop thinking about what his father had taught him.

Take your time.

Ask the question.

Make sure you understand what you're doing.

Those lessons had mattered when Graham was a child.

They still mattered now.

Graham finally spoke.

"All right. Take the time you need."

I looked at him.

"Thank you."

He closed the folder.

For the first time that afternoon, he seemed willing to accept that the decision would not happen on his schedule.

He stood and moved toward the door.

I walked with him.

At the entrance, he turned.

"I really do want this to work out."

"So do I."

He looked as though he wanted to say something else.

Instead, he kissed my cheek and left.

I watched his car pull away.

Then I returned to the living room.

The revised document lay on the table beside my notebook.

I picked up the envelope and looked through the additional information he had brought.

I wanted to read everything again before deciding what to do next.

I wasn't angry.

Not exactly.

I was tired, and I was sad that a conversation between a mother and her son had become something I needed to prepare for so carefully.

But I was no longer frightened of asking the next question.

I sat down, uncapped my pen, and turned to a clean page.

There was still more to understand.

This time, I intended to understand it before I gave anyone my answer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Read the Revised Papers Until the Words Began to Blur, Then I Realized the Hardest Question Was Whether My Own Son Still Trusted Me

The following week passed slowly.
