It's Vanessa."

"Good afternoon."

She asked how I was doing.

I told her I was fine.

She asked whether I had been out of the house much.

I said I had taken a few walks and done some shopping.

Her questions sounded ordinary, but there was something careful about the way she asked them.

She seemed to be measuring my answers.

I couldn't tell why.

After a little conversation about the weather, she moved to the subject of the document.

"Graham told me you still had some concerns."

"I do."

"We really are trying to make things easier."

"I understand that."

She paused.

"Sometimes, these arrangements can feel more complicated than they are."

I looked at the vegetables on the cutting board.

"That may be true. But I still need to understand them."

"Of course."

Her answer came too quickly.

I waited.

She continued.

"We don't want you to feel that we're putting pressure on you."

"Then please don't."

There was silence.

I had never spoken to Vanessa so directly before.

Usually, I would have added something to soften the sentence.

I might have said that I knew she meant well or that I appreciated her concern.

This time, I let the words stand.

She took a breath.

"I think Graham is worried about you."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why?"

"He's concerned that all this has been difficult for you."

"Of course it's been difficult. We're discussing something important."

"I know."

She sounded gentler now.

I wondered whether she genuinely felt sorry for me or whether she was trying to persuade me to see the matter from their side.

Perhaps both.

"He's been under a lot of pressure," she said.

"So have I."

"I don't mean to dismiss what you're feeling."

I didn't answer.

She continued.

"We just want to know that everything will be handled properly."

"Then we should make sure the paperwork is clear."

Another pause.

Then she said something that stayed with me.

"Sometimes, when people are worried, they can become more suspicious than they need to be."

I stopped cutting.

The knife rested against the board.

"Are you saying I'm being suspicious?"

"No. I'm saying that the situation has become stressful for everyone."

"That isn't what I asked."

She exhaled.

"I don't want us to misunderstand each other."

"Neither do I."

For a moment, I could hear only the faint sound of traffic on her end of the call.

Then Vanessa said she hoped we could resolve everything soon.

I told her I hoped so, too.

We ended the conversation politely.

I stood in the kitchen holding the phone.

The vegetables remained half-cut on the board.

I had spent years trying to be fair to Vanessa.

She had married my son, and I had wanted her to feel welcome in our family.

I had tried not to interfere in their marriage.

I had tried not to compare her with the women I had known when I was young.

I had tried to remember that every couple had their own way of doing things.

I knew I wasn't always easy.

I could be stubborn.

I could worry too much.

Sometimes I held on to old memories because they were easier than accepting how quickly life changed.

But none of that meant I had lost the ability to understand a document.

None of it meant my questions were unreasonable.

I returned to the cutting board.

As I worked, I kept thinking about Vanessa's words.

Suspicious.

The word bothered me because it made caution sound like a character flaw.

I wasn't accusing anyone of wrongdoing.

I was asking what I would be agreeing to.

Those were different things.

After dinner, I opened my notebook.

I wrote down the conversation as carefully as I could remember it.

I included the part about Graham being worried.

I included the comment about suspicion.

Then I closed the notebook.

I didn't want to turn every conversation into evidence against my son or his wife.

That wasn't my purpose.

I wanted to be able to look back and remember what had actually been said.

The following afternoon, Graham called.

He said the revised document was taking longer than expected.

I asked when he thought it might be ready.

He said he couldn't give me an exact date.

I told him that was fine, as long as he understood I wouldn't make a decision before receiving the complete version.

He sounded tired.

"Mother, we aren't trying to rush you."

I looked at the notebook on the table.

"I hope that's true."

He was silent.

Then he said, "It is."

I wanted to believe him.

So I let the conversation move on.

He asked whether I needed anything from the shops.

I told him I had everything I needed.

He asked about the garden.

I told him the plant his father had bought was still growing.

He laughed softly.

"Dad would be pleased."

"Yes," I said. "He would."

For a moment, we spoke about his father.

Graham remembered the way he used to fix things around the house.

He remembered the old toolbox and the time his father had let him use a screwdriver that was too large for his hands.

I listened.

I was grateful for the memories.

They reminded me that there was more to our relationship than the problem we were facing.

But memories couldn't solve the problem for us.

When Graham ended the call, I felt both closer to him and more uncertain about what would happen next.

I didn't want to choose between loving my son and protecting my own judgment.

I shouldn't have had to.

That evening, I took a walk around the garden.

The light was fading.

A few birds moved along the fence, searching for a place to settle.

I stopped beside the patch where Graham had once tried to save the injured sparrow.

I remembered how carefully he had placed the cardboard box beneath the shrub.

He had asked me to check on the bird while he was at school.

I had promised.

I had checked every hour.

When he came home and learned that the bird had died, he had cried into his father's shirt.

His father held him until the crying stopped.

Then he told Graham that caring about something did not mean he could control what happened to it.

I had remembered that lesson many times.

I had used it to comfort myself after my husband died.

I had used it when Graham moved away and began building his own life.

Now I wondered whether I needed to learn the lesson again.

I could care about my son without controlling his choices.

I could love him without agreeing to everything he wanted.

I could hope that Vanessa meant well without accepting every judgment she made about me.

The distinction felt simple when I stood in the garden.

It was harder when I imagined Graham sitting across from me with another document.

Still, I knew what I had to do.

I would read the papers.

I would ask questions.

And I would make my decision when I was ready.

Not when they were ready for me to make it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When Graham Finally Returned With the Papers, I Was Prepared to Listen, but I Was No Longer Prepared to Let Him Decide What I Should Understand

Graham didn't send the revised papers the next day.
