he asked.

"I'm well."

"Good."

There was a pause.

I waited for him to mention the document.

Instead, he asked whether I had been sleeping properly.

I told him I had.

He asked about the house.

I said everything was fine.

We spoke about the weather and a few ordinary things.

Then he said he wanted to come over again.

"When?"

"Perhaps tomorrow afternoon."

"Will you be bringing the document?"

He hesitated.

"Mother, I thought we could just talk first."

"We can talk. But I would like the document, too."

He sighed softly.

"I don't want us to keep arguing."

"Neither do I."

"Then let's try to make this easier."

I looked at the watering can beside my feet.

"Understanding what I'm being asked to agree to would make it easier."

He didn't answer.

For a moment, I thought he might end the call.

Instead, he said he would come the following afternoon.

I thanked him.

We said goodbye.

Afterward, I stood beside the plants and looked at the phone in my hand.

I was relieved that he had called.

I was also disappointed that we had spent another conversation discussing how to avoid an argument rather than how to resolve the problem.

Both feelings were true.

That afternoon, I went into the bedroom and opened the drawer where I kept my husband's old papers.

I wasn't searching for anything in particular.

I had simply remembered the way he used to organize important documents.

Everything had a place.

Receipts went into one folder.

Insurance papers went into another.

Letters he couldn't bear to throw away stayed in a small wooden box.

He had never been sentimental about money, but he was careful about anything that could affect our home.

I found the folder containing our old household records.

There were faded bills, copies of forms, and a few handwritten notes.

I sat on the bed and looked through them.

My husband's handwriting was still familiar.

His letters leaned slightly to the right, and he pressed hard enough that the words sometimes showed through on the page beneath.

I remembered watching him write at the kitchen table.

He would take his time, even when he was tired.

He believed that if something mattered, it deserved attention.

I closed the folder.

I wasn't trying to prove Graham wrong.

I wasn't trying to find a reason to distrust him.

I was trying to remind myself that carefulness was not the same as suspicion.

And asking questions was not the same as accusing someone of lying.

The next afternoon, Graham arrived alone.

I opened the door and let him in.

He carried a folder under his arm.

I noticed it immediately.

"Good afternoon," I said.

"Hi, Mother."

He kissed my cheek.

I led him into the living room.

The tea was ready, and two cups sat on the table.

He placed the folder beside them.

For a moment, I thought he might offer an apology.

Instead, he sat down and looked at me.

"I've been thinking about what you said."

"So have I."

"I don't want you to feel as though we're trying to take decisions away from you."

I looked at him carefully.

"Then I need to understand why the document was presented to me the way it was."

He nodded, although he looked uncomfortable.

"I know."

It was the first time he had acknowledged that the way he approached me mattered.

I felt a small amount of hope.

Then he opened the folder.

"I brought the papers."

He placed them on the table and pushed them toward me.

I picked them up.

There were several pages, including the sections I had already seen.

I began reading from the beginning.

Graham sat quietly while I worked through the first page.

When I reached the next, I stopped to ask him a question.

He answered it more clearly than he had before.

I asked another.

He explained that one of the sections concerned future arrangements and responsibilities.

I asked what would happen if I disagreed with a particular provision.

He looked down at the document.

"We would need to discuss that."

"All right."

I continued reading.

For the first time since the restaurant, we were having something close to a proper conversation.

I didn't agree with everything he said.

He didn't agree with every concern I raised.

But we were at least discussing the same things.

Then Vanessa's name came up in the conversation.

Graham explained that she had been involved in preparing the paperwork.

I asked whether she had helped decide what I should be asked to sign.

He looked uncomfortable again.

"We've discussed it together."

"Did either of you consider asking me what I wanted before preparing it?"

He rubbed his thumb along the edge of the folder.

"We thought this would be the most practical approach."

"Practical for whom?"

He looked up.

For a moment, I saw the boy from the photograph.

Not in his face exactly.

In the expression he wore when he realized he hadn't thought something through.

Then the expression disappeared.

"Mother, we're trying to plan ahead."

"I understand that."

"And we need to know where things stand."

"Then let's make sure we both understand where things stand."

He leaned back.

I could tell he was growing tired of the discussion.

So was I.

But I had learned something during those three days.

If I rushed to end the conversation because it was uncomfortable, I would leave with the same questions I had started with.

I returned to the page in my hand.

"Let's go through this section once more."

Graham looked at the clock.

Then he looked at me.

Finally, he nodded.

And we began again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The More Carefully I Read the Papers, the More I Realized That Being His Mother Had Never Meant I Should Stop Asking Questions

I kept my promise to myself for three days.
