I'll send you a copy."

I handed it over.

He placed it inside a folder Vanessa had brought.

Then he looked at me with an expression I couldn't quite read.

"Can we talk tomorrow?"

I considered saying yes.

That would have been the easiest answer.

It would have let all three of us return to our evenings and pretend the conversation had been reasonable.

But I had already spent too many hours that day accepting less than I wanted because asking for more made other people uncomfortable.

"Tomorrow is fine," I said. "But I want to read everything before I agree to anything."

He nodded.

"Of course."

Vanessa gave a small, tight smile.

"We'll make sure you have what you need."

I didn't thank her.

I wasn't angry enough to be rude.

I was simply tired of rewarding people for offering me the minimum they should have offered in the first place.

Graham started to turn away.

Then I remembered something.

"One more thing."

He stopped.

"Yes?"

"Why did you look straight at me when you came in and pretend you hadn't seen me?"

His face changed so quickly that I knew he had not expected the question.

Vanessa's eyes moved between us.

"I didn't pretend anything," Graham said.

"You looked at me."

"I was checking in with the host."

"You saw me."

He exhaled.

"Mother, this is not the time."

"When would be the time?"

He glanced at the dining room.

I waited.

At last, he said, "We had business to attend to."

I looked at him for a long moment.

"So did I."

He frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I came here to have dinner. I didn't come to interrupt you."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Nobody said you did."

"You didn't have to."

I could tell Graham wanted to end the conversation.

I could also tell he was embarrassed.

Not embarrassed because he had hurt me.

Embarrassed because we were discussing it where someone might hear.

That distinction mattered.

I had spent years protecting him from uncomfortable moments.

I had explained away his absences.

I had told relatives he was busy when he hadn't called.

I had defended him when people said he was becoming distant.

I had done all of it because I loved him.

But love could become a kind of cover.

If you kept putting a good explanation over someone's bad behavior, eventually even you could forget what had happened underneath.

I didn't want to forget anymore.

"Enjoy your evening, Graham."

I turned toward the door.

He didn't call after me.

Outside, the air felt colder than it had when I arrived.

I walked to my car and unlocked it.

Before getting in, I stood beside the driver's door and looked back at the restaurant.

Through the windows, I could see the warm lights and the crowded tables.

Graham had returned to his guests.

Vanessa was seated beside him.

They were talking to the people around them, and nobody looking at that table would have guessed what had happened near the entrance.

I got into my car.

I didn't start the engine immediately.

I sat with my hands resting on the steering wheel and tried to understand why the document had unsettled me so much.

It wasn't only the paper.

It was the assumption behind it.

Graham had brought something important to me without warning.

He had expected me to accept it as a practical arrangement.

When I asked questions, he treated those questions as a problem.

I had seen that pattern before.

I had simply never wanted to call it what it was.

On the drive home, I passed a grocery store where the parking lot was still full.

A woman stood near the entrance holding a bouquet of flowers.

Her young son was trying to open the car door while she balanced the flowers and a shopping bag.

I slowed at the intersection and watched them for a second.

Then the light changed.

I drove on.

At home, I took off my dress and hung it carefully in the wardrobe.

I washed my face.

I put my handbag on the kitchen table and made myself a cup of tea.

The house was just as I had left it that morning.

The calendar still hung beside the refrigerator.

The chair near the window was still slightly crooked.

Nothing in the rooms had changed.

I had.

I took a notebook from the drawer and wrote down the things I remembered about the document.

I didn't know why I did it at first.

Perhaps I wanted to keep the details straight.

Perhaps I wanted something concrete to look at, something that would stop me from explaining the evening away by morning.

I wrote Graham's words as closely as I could remember them.

Then I wrote down the questions he had not answered.

When I finished, I closed the notebook.

My phone rang a little after ten.

Graham's name appeared on the screen.

I answered.

"Hello."

"Are you home?"

"Yes."

"Good."

There was a pause.

I waited for him to ask how I was feeling.

He didn't.

"I don't want you to misunderstand what happened tonight," he said.

I leaned back in my chair.

"Then explain it."

"We're trying to get certain things in order."

"You said that already."

"Because it's true."

"Then I need to know what those things are."

He sighed.

"Can we leave this until tomorrow?"

I looked at the notebook beside my hand.

"All right."

"I'll call you."

"I hope you do."

He was silent for a moment.

Then he said goodnight.

I returned the greeting and ended the call.

For several minutes, I kept the phone in my hand.

I had expected to feel better after hearing his voice.

Instead, I felt the same distance I had felt in the restaurant.

Perhaps even more.

I set the phone down beside the notebook.

Then I opened the notebook again and looked at the questions I had written.

I had spent years worrying about whether I was being a good mother.

That night, for the first time, I wondered whether being a good mother had taught me to accept things I should have questioned.

I didn't have an answer.

But I knew I wasn't going to sign anything until I did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When Graham Returned to the Matter, His Wife Spoke About Me as Though I Were No Longer Capable of Knowing My Own Mind

Graham looked toward the restaurant entrance.
