She just wants everyone there.”

I nodded.

“That sounds nice.”

He looked at me.

“Would you come?”

The question was simple.

It was also different from the way he had handled the vacation.

He was asking.

I felt a small warmth in my chest.

“Let me check what I have planned.”

“Sure.”

He picked up his phone again.

I finished putting the groceries away.

For a moment, I thought about how much had changed since the note appeared on our kitchen counter.

Back then, Mauro had decided everything before I knew anything.

Now he had asked whether I wanted to attend a family gathering.

It wasn't a grand gesture.

It was the sort of question married people should be able to ask without thinking about it.

But I had learned not to dismiss ordinary changes.

That evening, I checked my calendar.

I could make the gathering work.

When I told Mauro, he seemed pleased.

“Good. Mom will be happy.”

I smiled.

“I hope so.”

He came over and kissed my forehead.

The gesture was familiar.

For a moment, I felt the comfort of our old routine returning.

Then he mentioned that his mother had also been talking about another family plan.

He began explaining what she had in mind.

I listened, waiting for him to tell me what he wanted to do.

Instead, he said, “I told her we'd probably be able to help.”

I stopped folding the kitchen towel in my hands.

“Help how?”

He looked at me.

“With the arrangements. Maybe some of the costs.”

I set the towel down.

“Mauro, did you already agree to that?”

He hesitated.

“I said we'd see what we could do.”

“That sounds like a commitment.”

“It's not definite.”

I took a breath.

“Then let's talk about it before you promise anything.”

His expression tightened.

For a second, I saw the man who had called me from Colorado, furious that I had refused to do what he wanted.

Then he looked away.

“All right.”

I wasn't sure whether he was genuinely agreeing or simply trying to avoid another argument.

I decided to give him the chance to follow through.

We sat at the table and discussed what he had said to Patricia.

I asked what she had requested.

He explained what he knew.

We talked about our own plans and the expenses we already had to consider.

There were things we could potentially help with.

There were other things we could not agree to without more information.

We decided that Mauro would speak to his mother again before making any promises.

It was a reasonable solution.

When we finished, he looked tired.

“I wish this didn't have to be so complicated.”

I understood what he meant.

I wished it were easier too.

But I also knew that the difficulty did not come from the questions themselves.

It came from the fact that we were learning to ask them after years of doing things another way.

“Maybe it will get easier,” I said.

He nodded.

I wanted to believe that.

The next day, Mauro spoke to Patricia.

I did not hear the conversation.

He took the call in another room, and I continued working at the kitchen table.

When he returned, he seemed relieved.

“It's sorted out.”

“What did you decide?”

“I told her we needed to discuss the details before agreeing to anything.”

I looked up from my papers.

“How did she take that?”

“She wasn't thrilled.”

I waited.

“But she understood that we couldn't promise anything yet.”

I smiled.

“I'm glad you talked to her.”

He shrugged as though it were nothing.

But I knew it had not been easy for him.

Patricia was accustomed to getting an answer quickly.

Mauro had spent years trying to keep her happy.

I understood that pressure because I had felt it myself.

The difference was that I was no longer willing to let someone else's disappointment make every decision for me.

I hoped Mauro was learning the same thing.

That evening, we had dinner together.

He told me more about the family gathering.

We discussed what to bring and when we should leave.

Everything felt ordinary.

I enjoyed it.

I also noticed how carefully I was watching his behavior.

I wanted to know whether he would keep asking.

I wanted to know whether he would become angry the next time I disagreed.

I wanted proof that the change was real.

Then I caught myself.

I could not spend the rest of my life testing every conversation against the worst week of our marriage.

I needed to let new behavior become visible over time.

I also needed to remember that one good decision did not guarantee the next one would be good.

Both things could be true.

Before bed, I opened the drawer and looked at the folder.

I did not take the note out.

I simply touched the edge of the paper through the folder and closed the drawer again.

The vacation had taught me something I could not unlearn.

I could love Mauro.

I could care about Patricia.

I could want our family relationships to improve.

And I could still say no when I was asked to take responsibility for something I had never agreed to.

I did not need to choose between being kind and being honest.

The next morning, Mauro asked whether I wanted him to make coffee.

I said yes.

He poured two cups and brought them to the table.

We sat together while the morning light came through the window.

I felt grateful for the quiet.

Not because every problem had disappeared.

Because, for once, the quiet did not depend on me pretending I had no questions.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: At
