I'll tell you what I know.”

He explained the request.

I listened and asked a few questions.

We didn't settle anything that evening.

There wasn't enough information to make a decision.

That should have been the end of it.

Instead, Mauro spent the rest of the night behaving as though I had insulted him.

He answered my questions with short replies.

He moved around the kitchen without looking at me.

When I asked whether he wanted tea, he said he could make it himself.

I left him alone.

I knew that old habits would not disappear simply because we had discussed them once.

Still, the familiar tension made me sad.

I had hoped that asking a reasonable question would become easier for both of us.

Apparently, it was still difficult for him to hear one.

The next morning, I found him making coffee.

He had already prepared a mug for me.

I stood beside the counter and watched him pour.

“Thank you,” I said.

He nodded.

For a few minutes, we drank coffee without discussing the previous evening.

Then he said, “You don't have to question everything I tell you.”

I set my mug down.

“I wasn't questioning everything.”

“You wanted to know every detail.”

“I wanted to understand the request.”

He looked frustrated.

“Sometimes I just want to tell you something without it becoming a whole discussion.”

I understood that feeling.

There were times when I wanted to share something without having to defend it.

But there was a difference between sharing information and asking someone to help carry a responsibility.

“If you're telling me about something that doesn't affect me, you can just tell me,” I said. “If you're asking us to commit money, I need to understand what we're agreeing to.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Fine.”

I didn't know whether he agreed or simply wanted the conversation to end.

I decided not to press him.

I went to work and tried to concentrate.

Throughout the day, I kept thinking about the word fine.

It was a word we both used when we wanted to move past something.

Sometimes it meant we genuinely accepted the answer.

Other times, it meant we were tired of talking.

I had become very good at treating the second meaning as the first.

That evening, Mauro came home with groceries.

He put a bag on the counter and told me he had bought what we needed for dinner.

I thanked him.

We prepared the meal together.

While I chopped vegetables, he washed the dishes he had used.

It was a small act of cooperation.

I felt grateful for it.

I also realized how easily I had begun treating ordinary cooperation as proof that everything was improving.

I didn't want to make that mistake again.

A relationship could have good moments and still contain problems that needed attention.

Both things could be true.

After dinner, Mauro sat beside me on the sofa.

He put his phone away and asked how my day had gone.

I told him about a difficult task at work.

He listened.

Then he told me about something that had happened during his day.

For once, the conversation felt natural.

I could feel some of the distance between us easing.

I wanted to keep that feeling.

But I also knew I could not protect it by avoiding every subject that might make him uncomfortable.

Before we went to bed, I asked whether he was still upset about our conversation.

He looked at me.

“Not really.”

“Are you sure?”

“Rebecca, I said it's fine.”

I nodded.

I didn't ask again.

Later, lying beside him in the dark, I thought about how much energy I had spent trying to determine what he really meant.

I wanted to stop interpreting every silence.

I wanted to believe that when he said he was fine, he could tell me if he wasn't.

But I couldn't make that happen for him.

All I could do was speak honestly and give him room to do the same.

The next morning, I opened the drawer to put away a receipt.

The folder was still there.

I touched its edge but didn't take it out.

The note had become less important as an object.

What mattered was the question it had forced me to ask.

Had Mauro mistaken my willingness to help for an obligation to obey?

I still didn't know how he would answer that question.

I only knew that I could no longer live as though it didn't matter.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: When Patricia Called About the Vacation Again, I Realized That
