We need to talk.

I read it while standing beside the kitchen sink.

The words were ordinary.

My reaction was not.

My stomach tightened, and I found myself looking around the room as though I needed to prepare for someone arriving unexpectedly.

The kitchen was clean.

The dishes were put away.

The household folder sat in the drawer.

Nothing had changed.

But the thought of Mauro returning made the house feel different.

I had spent days getting used to the quiet.

Now I was imagining his suitcase by the entrance, his shoes beside the coat rack, and his voice asking why I had not fixed the problem before he came home.

I didn't want to dread my husband's return.

That realization made me sadder than I expected.

I had always looked forward to seeing him after time apart.

Even when we argued, I usually wanted the argument to end so we could return to our ordinary routine.

This time, I was afraid of what that routine would demand from me.

Would he apologize?

Would he insist that the entire matter had been a misunderstanding?

Would he expect me to make dinner and ask about the trip as though nothing had happened?

I could not predict his behavior.

I could only decide how I would respond.

I made myself a cup of tea and sat at the table.

The note was in the drawer, but I could remember every word without looking at it.

For a moment, I considered throwing it away before Mauro returned.

I imagined him finding it and asking why I had kept it.

I imagined myself explaining that I wanted to remember what had happened.

Then I imagined him telling me I was holding on to the past.

I realized I was already having an argument that had not happened.

I put the tea down and stopped.

I did not need to prepare answers to every possible accusation.

I needed to know what mattered to me.

The next morning, I wrote three things in my notebook.

I wanted to be asked before money was committed.

I wanted the card issue handled properly.

I wanted to discuss the way Mauro had spoken to me without being told that my feelings were the real problem.

The list was short.

It looked almost too simple after everything that had happened.

But I had learned how easily a conversation could move away from the original issue.

I wanted something I could return to when that happened.

I closed the notebook and went about my day.

At work, I found it easier to concentrate than I had the previous week.

I answered emails, finished a report, and spoke with a colleague about an ordinary problem.

For several hours, I felt like myself again.

Then Mauro called.

I answered.

“What time are you getting home?” I asked.

“Later than expected.”

“Okay.”

“Are you going to be there?”

“Yes.”

He paused.

“I don't want another fight when I get back.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then let's agree to put this behind us.”

I looked at the notebook on my desk.

“We can talk about it when you get home.”

“We've already talked about it.”

“We've argued about the card. We haven't really discussed what happened.”

He sounded frustrated.

“What is there left to discuss?”

I could have listed everything.

The note.

The trip.

The money.

The way he had left without telling me.

The threats he had made when I refused to reactivate the card.

Instead, I chose one sentence.

“I want to understand why you thought I didn't need to be asked.”

He did not answer immediately.

Then he said he had to go.

The call ended.

I sat still for a moment.

I knew I could not force him to have the conversation I wanted.

I also knew that pretending the conversation had already happened would solve nothing.

That evening, I came home and put my keys in the ceramic bowl near the entrance.

I checked the kitchen.

I put away the groceries.

I made dinner for one.

I wasn't sure whether Mauro would arrive that night or the next day, and I did not want to spend the evening waiting for the sound of his key in the lock.

After eating, I washed my plate and wiped the counter.

Then I took the folder from the drawer and placed it on the table.

I opened it.

The note looked smaller than I remembered.

I read it one last time.

Then I put it back and closed the folder.

I wasn't keeping it because I wanted to punish Mauro.

I was keeping it because I needed to stop letting other people rewrite my experience until I no longer trusted what I had seen.

I had found the note.

I had read it.

I had called the card company.

I had listened to the demands.

Those things had happened.

I could acknowledge my own mistakes without pretending they were someone else's.

I could admit that I had spent too many years avoiding difficult conversations.

I could admit that my fear of conflict had helped create the pattern we were now facing.

But I would not take responsibility for Mauro's decision to leave without asking me.

That responsibility belonged to him.

I returned the folder to the drawer.

Then I went into the living room and turned on a lamp.

I sat on the sofa with a book, but I read the same page several times.

My thoughts kept returning to the question I had written in my notebook.

Why had Mauro believed I didn't need to be asked?

I wondered whether he had simply become accustomed to getting his way.

I wondered whether he thought my willingness to help meant I would never refuse.

I wondered whether he had noticed how often I agreed because I was afraid of the argument that would follow a no.

There was no way to know without asking him.

And even if I asked, he might not be willing to answer.

I had to accept that uncertainty.

For years, I had tried to prevent uncertainty by anticipating everyone's needs.

I wanted to know what would upset Mauro before he became upset.

I wanted to know what Patricia expected before she complained.

I wanted to know how to resolve a problem before anyone else noticed it existed.

I had confused being prepared with being responsible for everything.

Now I was trying to let other people carry their own discomfort.

It felt unnatural.

It also felt necessary.

Before bed, I checked my phone.

There was one message from Mauro.

Tomorrow. We'll talk then.

I read it and put the phone down.

No apology.

No explanation.

Just a promise that a conversation would happen.

I did not know whether it would be useful.

But I knew what I wanted to say.

I would tell him that I had not reported the card to embarrass him.

I would tell him that I had not refused to help because I no longer cared about him.

I would tell him that I had refused because he had made a financial decision that affected me without asking me.

And I would tell him that I could not keep living as though my only role in our marriage was to make his decisions work.

I practiced the words once in my head.

Then I stopped.

I did not need to memorize a speech.

I needed to speak honestly.

The next morning, I woke early and made coffee.

The kitchen was quiet again.

I stood beside the window and watched the street come to life.

I felt nervous about Mauro coming home.

I also felt something I had not felt at the beginning of the week.

Resolve.

Not the kind that made me certain I could fix the marriage.

The kind that reminded me I did not have to abandon myself to keep it.

I finished my coffee, washed the cup, and put it away.

Then I opened the drawer one more time.

The folder was still there.

I left it where it was.

I had no idea whether Mauro would apologize when he walked through the door.

I had no idea whether he would understand what I had been trying to say.

But I was no longer willing to call silence a resolution.

When he came home, we would have to face what had happened.

Not just the card.

Not just the vacation.

The assumption beneath both.

For the first time, I was prepared to let that conversation be uncomfortable.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Had Practiced What I Wanted to Say, but When Mauro Finally Came Home, His First Question Was About the Card

Mauro's message arrived late in the afternoon.
