7 – I Began to Notice How Often I Apologized for Asking Simple Questions, and the Pattern Was Harder to Ignore Than the Argument

By the following morning, the vacation had become a constant presence in my life even though I wasn't there.

It appeared in messages.

It appeared in missed calls.

It appeared whenever someone mentioned how disappointed Mauro was.

I was tired of hearing about Colorado without being allowed to ask why I had been left behind.

I decided to stop discussing the trip with anyone except Mauro.

That did not mean I was refusing to speak to his family.

It meant I was no longer willing to defend the same decision to a different person every few hours.

I sent Mauro a brief message telling him I would discuss the situation with him when he returned.

Then I muted the family conversation on my phone.

The silence was immediate.

No more messages appeared at the top of my screen.

No more names interrupted whatever I was trying to do.

I had not realized how much attention I was giving those messages until they stopped demanding it.

That morning, I went to work and finished a task I had been postponing.

I ate lunch at my desk.

I answered two calls.

I came home at the usual time.

Nothing extraordinary happened.

But I felt more present in my own life.

That evening, I opened the household folder to put away a receipt.

The note was still inside.

I took it out and placed it on the table.

I didn't read it immediately.

Instead, I looked at the handwriting.

Mauro had written it quickly, without crossing anything out.

There was no hesitation in the words.

He had known what he wanted me to do.

I wondered whether he had even considered that I might refuse.

The thought made me uncomfortable.

I had always believed that people made assumptions because they did not know better.

Sometimes, that was true.

But an assumption could also survive because it had been rewarded.

Every time I agreed to cover an unexpected expense, Mauro learned that he could count on me.

Every time I avoided asking where the money had gone, he learned that I would not insist on an explanation.

Every time I apologized to end an argument, he learned that the argument worked.

I had not intended to teach him those things.

But intentions did not erase patterns.

I folded the note and returned it to the folder.

Then I sat at the table and thought about the first years of our marriage.

I remembered times when we had worked together to make decisions.

I remembered talking about plans before making commitments.

I remembered the relief of believing that we were building something together.

Those memories were real.

So were the later years, when conversations became shorter and decisions began arriving already made.

I had spent a long time explaining the difference away.

Mauro was busy.

His family needed him.

Unexpected expenses were part of life.

I was better at organizing things.

Each explanation seemed reasonable by itself.

Together, they had created a marriage in which I handled the consequences while he kept the freedom to decide.

I did not know whether Mauro saw it that way.

I knew that I did.

The next day, I received a call from him while I was at home.

I answered.

“Hi.”

“Are you still refusing to turn the card back on?”

I closed the notebook I had been reading.

“Yes.”

He sounded tired.

“I don't understand why you can't just help me until I get home.”

“I've explained why.”

“You keep repeating yourself.”

“Because you keep asking the same question.”

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said he had been thinking about the situation.

I waited.

He told me that the trip had been planned quickly and that he hadn't expected the card to become an issue.

He said everyone had been excited.

He said he had wanted to make the vacation happen without a lot of discussion.

I listened carefully.

For a moment, his explanation sounded almost reasonable.

Then he said he had assumed I would understand.

I felt the familiar disappointment return.

“You assumed I would pay,” I said.

“I assumed you would support me.”

“Those aren't the same thing.”

He sighed.

“Why do you have to make everything so complicated?”

I looked at the notebook on the table.

I had written down dates, conversations, and the steps I had taken to handle the card.

The facts were simple.

The argument was complicated because Mauro did not want to accept what those facts meant.

“I don't think the question is complicated,” I said. “You made a decision that affected me without asking me.”

“I didn't think you would react like this.”

That sentence hurt.

Not because it was cruel, but because it revealed how little he had considered my reaction before leaving.

He had thought about the trip.

He had thought about his family.

He had thought about what everyone wanted.

He had not thought seriously about what I might want.

I took a breath.

“What did you expect me to do when I found the note?”

“I expected you to understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That I wanted to take my family away for a few days.”

“You could have told me that.”

“I didn't want another argument.”

I sat back.

There it was again.

He had avoided asking because he did not want to hear an answer he might dislike.

Then he had become angry when I refused to behave as though the question had never mattered.

“I can't promise you that every conversation will be easy,” I said. “But you can't avoid every conversation and expect me to agree with the result.”

He didn't answer.

For a few seconds, I could hear only the faint noise around him.

Then he asked whether I was planning to make things difficult when he came home.

“No,” I said. “I'm planning to talk to you honestly.”

He sounded unconvinced.

I could not fix that.

We ended the call without resolving anything.

Afterward, I went to the kitchen and filled a glass of water.

My hands were steady.

That surprised me.

I had expected another difficult conversation to leave me shaken.

Instead, I felt a little more certain of what I needed to say.

I wasn't asking Mauro to stop loving his family.

I wasn't asking him to stop taking trips.

I wasn't demanding that he explain every dollar he spent.

I was asking him to include me in decisions that affected me.

That seemed reasonable.

It still seemed reasonable even when he disagreed.

Later that evening, Patricia called.

I nearly ignored it, but I answered.

“Rebecca, Mauro says you two haven't settled anything.”

“We've spoken.”

“But nothing has changed.”

“The card issue is being handled.”

She made an impatient sound.

“I mean between you and him.”

I looked toward the kitchen counter.

“I think we need to talk when he's home.”

“Why wait?”

“Because we're going in circles.”

She told me that delaying the conversation would only make the problem worse.

I told her that arguing over the phone had not made it better.

For once, she did not immediately accuse me of being unreasonable.

Instead, she asked whether I still loved Mauro.

The question caught me off guard.

“Yes,” I said.

“Then you need to remember that.”

I looked down at my hands.

“I do remember that.”

“Sometimes love means putting things aside.”

“Sometimes it means talking about them.”

She went quiet.

I could tell she did not like my answer.

She told me that Mauro had always been generous with his family and that he deserved to enjoy the trip without being made to feel guilty.

I said I did not want him to feel guilty.

I wanted him to understand that I should have been asked.

She returned to the same argument.

I returned to the same answer.

Eventually, she said she hoped I would reconsider before he came home.

I told her I would think about what she had said.

That was true.

I did think about it.

I thought about it while washing dishes.

I thought about it while folding laundry.

I thought about it when I climbed into bed.

But thinking about Patricia's words did not make them right.

Love could require compromise.

It could require patience.

It could require forgiveness.

It could not require one person to pretend that the other person's decisions did not matter.

I was beginning to understand that the problem was larger than the platinum card.

The card had simply made the arrangement impossible to ignore.

For years, I had measured the success of our marriage by how rarely we argued.

I had not asked whether the peace we maintained was fair to both of us.

I had assumed that if I could keep everyone comfortable, we were doing well.

Now I wondered how much of that comfort had depended on me remaining quiet.

The following morning, I opened my notebook again.

The sentence I had written earlier was still there.

I am allowed to say no.

I read it once, then closed the notebook.

I did not know what would happen when Mauro came home.

I did know I could not return to the old arrangement simply because it was familiar.

That was not a solution.

It was only the first honest thing I had been able to say to myself in a long time.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Closer Mauro Came to Coming Home, the More I Feared Returning to Normal
