Someone walked a dog along the pavement. A woman hurried toward her car with a travel mug in one hand.

Nobody looking at my house would have guessed that my marriage had become a financial argument stretching across several states.

I envied them their ordinary morning.

My phone was waiting on the counter.

There were more messages.

The first was from Mauro.

You need to stop making decisions when you're angry.

I read it twice.

Then I checked the time it had arrived.

He had sent it late the previous evening, after I had refused to answer his calls.

The message made it sound as though I had acted impulsively.

I had not.

I had looked at the transactions, contacted the card company, and reported a problem.

I had then refused to reverse that decision simply because my husband was upset.

There was a difference.

I was beginning to see how often Mauro relied on me not to notice it.

The second message was from Patricia.

I hope you're satisfied with yourself. Everyone is upset because of you.

The third came from Mauro's sister.

I didn't understand what you were trying to accomplish. We only wanted a nice week together.

I put the phone down.

I could have answered all three messages.

I could have explained that I had never agreed to pay for the vacation, that I hadn't known everyone was leaving, and that the card had been reported missing for a reason.

But I had already explained those things.

The problem was not that they misunderstood me.

The problem was that my explanation did not give them what they wanted.

I finished my coffee and opened the drawer where I kept our household paperwork.

The folded note was still there.

I unfolded it and smoothed the creases with my palm.

Mauro's handwriting leaned slightly to the right.

He had written quickly, pressing hard enough that some of the letters had left marks on the paper beneath.

The message had been short.

The confidence behind it was not.

He had decided where he was going.

He had decided who was coming.

He had decided I would cover the cost.

There had been no space for me in any of those decisions except as the person expected to pay.

I put the note back in the drawer.

Then I called the card company.

The representative asked me to confirm my identity and explain why I had reported the card.

I answered carefully.

I told her I could not account for the card's location and wanted to make sure no further transactions were processed without my authorization.

She asked whether I recognized the recent spending.

I said I recognized some of the circumstances, but I had not personally approved the trip.

She explained what could be done next and what information the company would need to review the account.

I listened.

I took notes.

I asked questions whenever something was unclear.

It was an ordinary conversation.

That was what made it important.

For the first time since Mauro had called from Colorado, I was dealing with the actual problem rather than his reaction to it.

When the call ended, I placed my notes beside the coffee mug.

I felt calmer.

Not happy.

Just calmer.

I had taken one step that did not depend on Mauro agreeing with me.

A few minutes later, the phone rang again.

This time, I answered.

“What are you doing?” Mauro asked.

“Getting ready for work.”

“Don't play games with me.”

“I'm not.”

“You have my mother upset.
