18 – I Had Thought Jasmine Was the Person Standing Between Me and My Husband, Until I Finally Understood Who Had Broken Our Promises

I blamed Jasmine for a long time.

Not for everything.

But for more than I wanted to admit.

Her name had become attached to nearly every painful question in my marriage.

Where was Aaron?

Was Jasmine with him?

Why had he taken her to another event?

Why had I stopped being invited?

Why did he tell people I preferred staying home?

I thought about her constantly.

Even when I didn't want to.

Especially when Aaron was absent.

I had allowed her to become the explanation for everything wrong between us.

That made the situation easier to understand.

There was another woman.

She had become involved with my husband.

If she disappeared, perhaps things would return to normal.

I had wanted to believe that.

But I was beginning to recognize how incomplete the explanation was.

Jasmine hadn't made promises to me at our marriage.

Aaron had.

Jasmine hadn't been the person I trusted to share my life.

Aaron had.

And Jasmine hadn't been responsible for explaining why I no longer accompanied my husband to professional events.

Aaron had been the one telling people I preferred staying home.

Those distinctions mattered.

They didn't make Jasmine's involvement harmless.

They didn't mean she had no responsibility for her own choices.

But they reminded me where the central betrayal had occurred.

Inside my marriage.

Between my husband and me.

For a long time, I had avoided looking directly at that.

It was easier to be angry with Jasmine.

I hadn't loved her.

I hadn't shared years of memories with her.

I didn't remember a time when she made me feel safe.

I didn't have to grieve a relationship with her.

But Aaron was different.

Being angry with him meant facing the distance between the man I married and the man whose actions had hurt me.

It meant admitting that the husband I trusted had chosen to behave dishonestly.

It meant recognizing that his professional success hadn't prevented him from making destructive personal decisions.

And it meant accepting that our marriage couldn't be repaired simply by removing another woman from the situation.

That last realization changed the way I thought about everything.

Suppose Jasmine stopped being part of Aaron's life.

Suppose I never heard her name again.

Suppose she no longer attended charity galas or appeared beside him at work.

Would I suddenly trust him?

I wanted to say yes.

But I couldn't.

I would still remember the fifth night.

I would still remember the earlier four.

I would still remember the invitations that stopped coming.

And I would still know that Aaron had allowed people to believe I had willingly stepped away from his public life.

Those memories didn't belong to Jasmine.

They belonged to my marriage.

The broken trust was between Aaron and me.

No amount of blaming another woman could change that.

I thought about how much time I had wasted comparing myself with her.

She knew his schedule.

She understood his working day.

She was present when professional matters required his attention.

Those things were part of her job.

Yet I had begun treating them as proof that she possessed something I lacked.

I wondered whether Aaron found her more interesting.

Whether he preferred talking with someone who knew every detail of the company.

Whether her presence made his life easier than mine did.

Those thoughts were cruel.

Not because wondering was wrong.

But because I had allowed the answers I imagined to determine how I felt about myself.

I started thinking I wasn't enough.

Not knowledgeable enough.

Not interesting enough.

Not close enough to the world Aaron occupied.

I had turned the affair into a judgment about my worth.

And that was unfair.

I didn't need to understand billion-dollar contracts to deserve fidelity.

I didn't need to be present at every executive meeting to deserve honesty.

And I didn't need to compete with Aaron's assistant to deserve respect inside my marriage.

Those things should have been obvious.

But betrayal made them difficult to remember.

I thought about how different my life might have felt if Aaron had simply been honest.

He could have acknowledged that our marriage was changing.

He could have told me he was unhappy.

He could have explained why he no longer wanted me beside him at events.

Those conversations would have hurt.

I wasn't pretending otherwise.

But at least they would have allowed me to understand the situation I was living in.

Instead, he had let me keep making excuses.

He had allowed me to believe that work explained everything.

He had given colleagues an explanation for my absence that wasn't true.

And he had carried on while I wondered what I was doing wrong.

That was the damage I couldn't ignore.

I had been denied the opportunity to respond honestly to the truth because the truth had been concealed.

When I finally exposed the affair, I wasn't revealing a problem that had just begun.

I was revealing something that had already changed my marriage.

The Slack message was public.

The betrayal had been personal.

And the personal damage couldn't be repaired through public embarrassment.

I needed to keep remembering that.

I thought about Michael.

He had watched Aaron for eleven years.

He had known him as a businessman who understood the importance of careful decisions.

He had seen him handle complicated negotiations with remarkable confidence.

And he had noticed how careless Aaron had become over the previous three years.

Michael wasn't responsible for stopping the affair.

That was important.

It would have been easy to resent everyone who had seen Jasmine beside Aaron and said nothing.

I could have convinced myself that colleagues should have warned me.

That someone should have challenged his explanation.

That someone should have recognized what was happening.

But most people didn't know the private details of our marriage.

They saw what Aaron allowed them to see.

And they had their own lives and responsibilities.

I couldn't make them accountable for his choices.

Michael's responsibility had changed only when the situation reached the company.

When my message appeared in the Slack channel, employees began discussing the CEO's marriage.

The affair involved an executive assistant.

The public conversation created concerns for leadership.

Those were matters Michael could no longer ignore.

But the marriage itself remained my responsibility and Aaron's.

Not the employees'.

Not Michael's.

Not the people attending charity galas.

I wished I had understood that before sending the message.

Perhaps I would have focused sooner on the decision I actually needed to make.

But I couldn't change the past.

I could only learn from it.

And the lesson was becoming clear.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my life trying to make everyone agree that Aaron had hurt me.

I already knew he had.

I didn't need five hundred witnesses to prove it.

I didn't need Jasmine to admit that the affair was wrong before recognizing what it had done to me.

And I didn't need Aaron's professional reputation to collapse before allowing myself to move forward.

I needed to stop treating other people's reactions as the measure of my experience.

The truth was enough.

I thought about what it would mean to face Jasmine.

For years, I had imagined a confrontation filled with questions.

Why had she become involved with him?

What had Aaron told her?

Did she know I was still waiting at home?

Did she understand how humiliating it was to be excluded from events while another woman accompanied my husband?

Those questions had felt urgent.

Now they seemed less useful.

Even if she answered them, I would still have to decide what to do with my marriage.

Even if she apologized, the trust would remain broken.

Even if she promised never to see Aaron again, I would still have to consider whether I could believe him.

The decision couldn't be made through Jasmine.

It had to be made directly.

By me.

I thought about the words that had been forming in my mind for so long.

You can keep him.

I understood how they might sound.

Bitter.

Angry.

Possessive.

But that wasn't how I wanted to mean them.

Aaron wasn't something I owned.

I couldn't give him away.

I couldn't decide whether Jasmine had permission to be with him.

He was responsible for his choices.

So was she.

The words meant something different to me.

They meant I was finished competing.

I was finished trying to prove I deserved the attention my husband had freely given another woman.

I was finished treating his decision as a prize that would determine whether I had value.

If Aaron chose Jasmine, that was his responsibility.

I wasn't going to make his choice for him.

But I could refuse to keep waiting for him to choose me.

That was the freedom I was beginning to understand.

It didn't make me happy.

Not immediately.

There was still pain.

Still disappointment.

Still the memory of the marriage I thought we had.

But the pain no longer had to decide everything.

I could feel hurt without begging.

I could feel angry without seeking another public confrontation.

And I could recognize Jasmine's involvement without making her the center of my future.

That mattered.

Because for years, my thoughts had revolved around two people.

Aaron.

Jasmine.

What they were doing.

What they wanted.

What their choices meant for me.

I had allowed their behavior to occupy so much space that I rarely thought about anything else.

I wanted my mind back.

I wanted to stop hearing Aaron's name and immediately wondering where Jasmine was.

I wanted to stop remembering charity galas as evidence that I had somehow become less deserving of respect.

I wanted to stop measuring myself against a woman whose presence in my marriage should never have become a competition.

Those weren't small wishes.

They were the beginning of something I had been missing for years.

Self-respect.

Not the kind that needed public approval.

Not the kind that depended on defeating another woman.

The quiet kind.

The kind that allowed me to recognize when someone else's behavior was wrong without concluding that something must be wrong with me.

I had been learning that slowly.

Painfully.

But I was learning.

Aaron's affair had changed our marriage.

It hadn't changed my worth.

His decision to exclude me had hurt.

It hadn't made me unworthy of inclusion.

His willingness to spend nights away had damaged my trust.

It hadn't meant I deserved to be abandoned.

I needed to keep separating those things.

Because for years, I had allowed them to become one.

The more Aaron withdrew, the less valuable I felt.

The more Jasmine appeared beside him, the more I questioned myself.

The more excuses I accepted, the less confidence I had in my own judgment.

I wanted that pattern to end.

And ending it meant accepting something uncomfortable.

I couldn't repair Aaron's character through my patience.

I couldn't make him faithful by being more understanding.

I couldn't make Jasmine responsible for promises she hadn't made to me.

And I couldn't rebuild our marriage alone.

That was the truth.

It was painful.

But it was also a relief.

Because I had spent so much time trying to solve something that wasn't mine to solve by myself.

I had tried to find the right explanation.

The right question.

The right moment.

The right amount of patience.

As though there were some perfect combination that would make Aaron become the husband I remembered.

I didn't want to live that way anymore.

I wanted honesty without having to fight for it.

I wanted respect without having to compete.

And I wanted a life where my happiness didn't depend on whether another woman remained interested in my husband.

By then, I no longer needed to defeat Jasmine.

I needed to stop letting the affair define how I viewed myself.

And I understood that the decision I was preparing to make was not about who would have Aaron.

It was about whether I would keep abandoning myself in order to remain his wife.
