17 – I Had Finally Stopped Waiting for Aaron to Choose Our Marriage, but I Still Had to Face the Years I Had Spent Choosing Him

I used to think a marriage ended when two people stopped loving each other.

Now I understood that it could begin falling apart while one person was still trying desperately to hold it together.

That was the part I hadn't wanted to face.

I had loved Aaron.

I had trusted him.

I had made room for his ambitions, his responsibilities, and the demands of his work.

And slowly, I had allowed those things to become more important than my own peace.

It hadn't happened all at once.

That was why I hadn't recognized it.

One dinner without me.

One charity gala with Jasmine.

One explanation about my preference for staying home.

One night when Aaron didn't return.

Then another.

Until the fifth night became the moment I could no longer pretend the marriage was simply going through a difficult period.

I thought about that night often.

Not because I was proud of everything I had done.

I wasn't.

I had exposed the affair in a company-wide Slack channel.

Five hundred employees could read what I wrote.

I had made my husband's betrayal part of a conversation inside the business he led.

That was a serious decision.

I knew it then.

I understood it even more clearly afterward.

But the message hadn't come from nowhere.

It had come from years of being left out.

Years of accepting explanations that didn't feel honest.

Years of wondering why my husband could devote so much attention to complicated business decisions while treating our marriage as something he could postpone indefinitely.

I had reached the end of what I could endure quietly.

Still, I had made one mistake afterward.

I kept imagining that Aaron's reaction would tell me what to do next.

I wondered whether he was angry.

Whether he felt ashamed.

Whether he understood how much damage he had caused.

Whether Michael had been forced to explain why the employees were discussing their CEO's marriage before the first executive meeting.

Those questions remained in my mind.

But I wasn't there.

I didn't know what Aaron said after reading the message.

I didn't know what Michael thought as he turned the tablet around.

And I didn't know whether the public embarrassment had changed anything inside my husband.

For years, I had filled gaps in my knowledge with guesses.

I needed to stop.

There was something exhausting about living through possibilities that hadn't happened.

Perhaps Aaron would apologize.

Perhaps he would blame me.

Perhaps he would finally acknowledge the affair.

Perhaps he would treat the entire situation as a threat to his professional reputation.

I could imagine all those things.

But imagination wasn't evidence.

And I had spent too much time mistaking the two.

I needed to think about what I already knew.

Aaron had been my husband.

He had made promises to me.

He had gradually excluded me from parts of his life where I had once belonged.

He had allowed Jasmine, his executive assistant, to accompany him to public events.

He had told people I preferred remaining at home.

And he had stayed out all night repeatedly until the fifth absence brought me to 3:17 in the morning.

Those facts didn't require interpretation.

They were enough.

I thought about what marriage had meant to me before everything changed.

It wasn't about attending every event together.

It wasn't about knowing every detail of Aaron's work.

It wasn't about expecting him to spend every evening at home.

I understood that people needed space.

I understood that careers were demanding.

I understood that being married didn't mean becoming the center of every decision.

But I had expected honesty.

I had expected consideration.

I had expected my husband to remember that his choices affected someone waiting for him at home.

Those weren't unreasonable expectations.

I wished I had understood that sooner.

For years, I had treated my discomfort as something to overcome.

If I felt jealous of Jasmine, I tried to hide it.

If I felt hurt by being excluded, I told myself I was being too sensitive.

If Aaron stayed away, I searched for explanations connected to his work.

I thought that made me a supportive wife.

Sometimes, it probably did.

But support wasn't supposed to require ignoring the truth.

And trust wasn't supposed to mean refusing to ask questions.

I had confused those things.

I had paid for that confusion with years of uncertainty.

There was something particularly painful about remembering the way Aaron talked about my absence.

Claire preferred staying home.

I kept hearing those words in my mind.

They sounded harmless.

Almost thoughtful.

As though my husband respected my wishes enough to attend events without pressuring me.

But he hadn't asked what I wanted.

He had simply allowed other people to believe that I had chosen not to attend.

And Jasmine had stood beside him.

That was what made the explanation so difficult to forget.

It didn't merely excuse my absence.

It replaced the truth with something convenient.

I had been excluded.

That was different from choosing to stay home.

And for years, I hadn't been willing to say it.

I wondered whether the people who worked with Aaron had noticed the change.

Michael had.

He had worked beside my husband for eleven years.

He had watched Aaron negotiate enormous contracts.

He had seen the confidence that made experienced executives uncomfortable.

And he had also watched Aaron grow careless over the previous three years.

The signs were there.

Small at first.

Then increasingly obvious.

I didn't know why Michael had chosen not to interfere earlier.

But I understood that our marriage wasn't his responsibility.

He wasn't a counselor.

He wasn't a relative.

He was a colleague whose job involved the company and its employees.

That morning, however, the problem had reached his professional world.

Five hundred employees were discussing my message.

The affair involved Aaron's executive assistant.

The matter could no longer be treated as entirely separate from work.

I understood why Michael had to take it seriously.

But I was beginning to recognize something important.

The company could address its own concerns.

It couldn't repair my marriage.

No executive meeting could restore trust.

No professional embarrassment could give me back the nights I had spent worrying.

No amount of workplace attention could make Aaron faithful.

That responsibility belonged to him.

And deciding whether I could remain married to him belonged to me.

I had spent years forgetting that second part.

I kept thinking about what Aaron wanted.

Did he still want our marriage?

Did he prefer Jasmine?

Did he intend to continue the affair?

Was he willing to change?

Those questions mattered.

But I had allowed them to become the only questions.

I had forgotten to ask what I wanted.

Not what I hoped Aaron would give me.

Not what I thought a good wife should accept.

What I actually wanted.

I wanted to feel secure.

I wanted to be included.

I wanted to know that when my husband spoke about me, he was telling the truth.

I wanted a relationship where fidelity was a decision he made willingly.

Not something I had to fight another woman to obtain.

I wanted peace.

That last word stayed with me.

Peace.

I hadn't felt much of it during the previous three years.

There had always been something to wonder about.

Something to explain away.

Something that made me feel foolish for asking.

Even before the overnight absences, I had been living with uncertainty.

The nights had only made it harder to ignore.

I had become accustomed to hearing about events afterward.

Accustomed to Jasmine's presence.

Accustomed to feeling that Aaron's work came before any conversation about our marriage.

And eventually, I had become accustomed to not expecting much from him at all.

That was what frightened me.

I had stopped recognizing how lonely I was.

I thought about the wife I had been at the beginning of those changes.

She would have been surprised by what I eventually accepted.

She would have wondered why I hadn't asked more questions.

Why I had allowed my place beside Aaron to disappear.

Why I had treated five overnight absences as something I needed to endure before acting.

I wanted to tell her that it hadn't been simple.

That love complicated things.

That history mattered.

That leaving behind the marriage you believed in was frightening.

But I also wanted to tell her something else.

Being frightened didn't mean she had to remain silent.

I wish I had known that.

I wish I had recognized the difference between protecting a marriage and protecting its appearance.

The two had become confused in my mind.

I had believed that keeping our problems private meant preserving something valuable.

Instead, the privacy had allowed Aaron to continue without facing the truth at home.

That didn't mean the Slack message was the only possible response.

It wasn't.

But it was the response I made when I could no longer tolerate the silence.

Now I needed to make another decision.

One that wasn't driven entirely by anger.

One that didn't depend on embarrassing Aaron.

One that would still make sense after the employees stopped talking.

I needed to decide whether the marriage I was living in was something I could accept.

And I already knew the answer.

I couldn't.

I couldn't return to waiting for another unexplained absence.

I couldn't pretend Jasmine was merely a professional presence after learning about the affair.

I couldn't listen to Aaron describe my supposed preferences without remembering that he hadn't bothered to ask me.

I couldn't keep making myself smaller so our marriage would appear normal.

Something had to change.

And I was no longer willing to be the only person making sacrifices.

I thought about love.

For years, I had treated love as a reason to keep trying.

And sometimes it was.

But love couldn't excuse everything.

It couldn't replace honesty.

It couldn't erase betrayal.

It couldn't make a person feel respected when the other person's actions repeatedly suggested otherwise.

I could love Aaron and still acknowledge that he had hurt me.

I could remember our happier years without pretending the present was happy.

And I could accept that a marriage might no longer be healthy even when part of me still wanted it to survive.

That was painful.

But it was also true.

I had been avoiding truth for too long.

The Slack message had forced one truth into the open.

Now I needed to face another.

I wasn't required to keep living in the same pain simply because I had already endured it for years.

The time I had spent trying to save the marriage didn't obligate me to spend more.

The memories I valued didn't require me to accept new betrayals.

And the promises I had made didn't mean Aaron could abandon his without consequences.

I understood that more clearly than I ever had before.

I couldn't control what happened inside his company.

I couldn't control what Michael advised.

I couldn't control what Jasmine wanted.

And I couldn't control whether Aaron finally recognized the damage he had caused.

But I could choose not to return to the old arrangement.

That choice belonged to me.

No one had to approve it.

No one had to witness it.

And no company-wide message was needed to make it real.

For the first time, I wasn't asking how to get Aaron back.

I was asking how to stop losing myself while waiting for him.

And I understood that answering that question mattered more than anything he might say after reading my message.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: I Had
