15 – The More I Thought About Telling Jasmine She Could Keep Aaron, the More I Understood That I Was Not Giving Up Something That Still Belonged to Me

I had imagined those words before I understood what they meant.

You can keep him.

At first, they sounded like anger.

A final insult.

Something a hurt wife might say when she wanted another woman to feel ashamed.

But the more I thought about Jasmine, the less interested I became in humiliating her.

I wanted something else.

I wanted to stop fighting.

Not because I had decided the affair was acceptable.

It wasn't.

Not because Jasmine had done nothing wrong.

She had become involved with a married man.

And not because Aaron's behavior no longer hurt me.

It did.

I wanted to stop fighting because I was exhausted by a competition I had never agreed to enter.

For years, I had felt as though I was being compared with Jasmine.

Not necessarily through anything anyone said directly.

It was the situation itself.

She accompanied Aaron to events.

I stayed home.

She was part of his daily professional life.

I waited to hear about it afterward.

She appeared beside him in places where people once expected to see me.

And Aaron told them my absence was my preference.

That last detail made everything worse.

It suggested that I had willingly given up my place.

I hadn't.

I had wanted to remain his partner.

I had wanted to share parts of his public life.

I had wanted him to include me because I mattered to him.

Instead, I had begun wondering whether another woman was more important.

The thought had changed the way I saw myself.

I compared things that shouldn't have mattered.

Jasmine understood Aaron's work.

She knew his schedule.

She spent long hours around the people who helped run the company.

I began wondering whether those advantages explained why he preferred her company.

But I was asking the wrong question.

Marriage wasn't supposed to depend on being the most convenient person in someone's professional life.

I didn't have to become Aaron's assistant to deserve his attention.

I didn't have to attend every meeting to understand what honesty meant.

And I didn't have to compete with someone else's access to him.

I was his wife.

That should have mattered because of the promises we made to each other.

Not because I could prove I was more interesting or more useful than another woman.

I had forgotten that.

Or perhaps I had been afraid to insist on it.

I thought about how long I had remained silent.

Three years of growing distance.

Informal dinners that no longer included me.

Charity galas where Jasmine appeared beside Aaron.

Explanations that made my absence sound voluntary.

Then the overnight absences.

One after another.

Until the fifth night finally forced me to confront what I had been avoiding.

The affair hadn't begun in my mind at 3:17.

It had been part of my life long before I sent the message.

But that was the moment I stopped protecting the appearance of our marriage.

I didn't want to keep doing that.

The thought of Jasmine made me angry sometimes.

I wasn't going to pretend it didn't.

I wondered whether she ever considered the woman waiting at home.

I wondered whether she thought about what it meant to attend formal events with a married man whose wife had stopped being included.

I wondered whether she accepted Aaron's explanation about my preference for staying home.

I didn't know.

I couldn't claim to understand what she believed.

And I was tired of inventing conversations I had never heard.

What mattered was the relationship that existed.

Jasmine was Aaron's executive assistant.

She was also the woman involved in his affair.

Those two facts had created a situation that affected our marriage and eventually his workplace.

I didn't need to exaggerate them.

They were serious enough.

I thought about what I would say if I finally spoke directly to her.

At one time, I would have wanted answers.

I would have asked how long she had been involved with Aaron.

I would have asked what he told her about me.

I would have asked whether she knew how often I had been left alone.

But I was beginning to see how little those answers could change.

Even if Jasmine told me every detail, I would still be facing the same problem.

My husband had betrayed me.

He had allowed our marriage to become something I no longer trusted.

And he had continued behaving as though my place in his life could be quietly reduced without consequences.

Those choices belonged to Aaron.

I had been directing too much of my pain toward Jasmine because it was easier than accepting that.

I had never expected loyalty from her in the way I expected it from my husband.

That didn't excuse her involvement.

But it clarified something important.

The promises were Aaron's.

The marriage was ours.

The betrayal was something he had chosen to participate in.

I couldn't repair it by convincing Jasmine to disappear.

For a long time, I had imagined that possibility.

If she left the company, perhaps things would improve.

If Aaron stopped seeing her, perhaps I could relax.

If I no longer had to hear her name, perhaps the pain would fade.

But those thoughts focused on circumstances.

They didn't address the broken trust.

Even if Jasmine vanished from his professional life, I would still remember the affair.

I would still know Aaron had lied through his actions and explanations.

I would still wonder whether he understood what he had done.

And I would still have to decide whether I wanted to remain married to him.

That decision couldn't be made by another woman.

It belonged to me.

The realization brought a strange kind of sadness.

I had spent years feeling as though Jasmine possessed the power to destroy my marriage.

But the truth was that Aaron and I were the people responsible for the relationship we shared.

He had failed his responsibility.

And I had spent too long trying to compensate for that failure by being understanding enough for both of us.

I couldn't continue.

I thought about the people who had seen the Slack message.

Some might have blamed Jasmine.

Others might have blamed Aaron.

Some might have criticized me for making the affair public.

I couldn't control any of those reactions.

But I no longer wanted my future to depend on who received the most blame.

That wasn't going to make me happy.

It wasn't going to restore my confidence.

And it wasn't going to give me back the years I had spent waiting.

I needed something more than public judgment.

I needed the freedom to make a decision without feeling that it reflected my worth.

If I remained with Aaron, I didn't want it to be because I was afraid of losing to Jasmine.

If I left, I didn't want it to be because I believed she had won.

Those ideas made marriage sound like a contest.

And I was tired of living inside one.

I thought about Aaron as a person.

Not as the man everyone admired at the company.

Not as the CEO who could negotiate contracts worth enormous amounts.

Not as the confident executive Michael had known for eleven years.

As my husband.

The man who had made promises to me.

The man whose absence had become painfully familiar.

The man who had allowed another woman to stand beside him while telling colleagues I preferred staying home.

That was the person I had to consider.

And I had to be fair about what I knew.

I knew he had betrayed me.

I knew he had become careless.

I knew our marriage had changed.

I didn't know what he would eventually say in defense of himself.

I didn't know whether he would show regret.

And I didn't know whether he would be willing to do the work required to rebuild trust.

But I couldn't continue basing my future on what he might someday choose.

That had already cost me too much.

I remembered how many times I had hoped for improvement.

After a missed dinner.

After a charity gala.

After an unexplained absence.

Each time, I told myself things might be different next week.

I had spent years waiting for that difference.

Now I wanted to become the person who made a change instead of merely hoping for one.

That didn't mean everything would be easy.

I still loved parts of the life I had shared with Aaron.

I still remembered the man I believed I married.

I still felt sadness when I thought about how far we had drifted apart.

Those feelings weren't going to disappear because I reached a decision.

But they didn't have to prevent me from making one.

I was allowed to love someone and recognize that his behavior was hurting me.

I was allowed to remember happy years without pretending the present was happy.

And I was allowed to stop fighting for a relationship that had become dependent on my silence.

I thought about the words again.

You can keep him.

They sounded different now.

Less like an accusation.

More like a boundary.

I wasn't offering Aaron to Jasmine.

He wasn't an object I owned.

I wasn't granting her permission to continue an affair.

I was acknowledging that I couldn't control the choices of either person.

If Aaron wanted Jasmine, that was his decision.

If Jasmine wanted to remain involved with Aaron, that was hers.

But I had a choice, too.

I could refuse to compete.

I could refuse to beg for the attention of a man who had stopped treating our marriage with respect.

I could refuse to let another woman's presence determine how I valued myself.

That was what the words meant to me.

Not defeat.

Not surrender.

A refusal to continue participating in something that was destroying my peace.

I thought about the fifth night one more time.

I had been alone.

Angry.

Embarrassed.

Desperate for the truth to stop being hidden.

I had posted the message because I wanted Aaron and the people around him to see what was happening.

Now I realized I needed to see something myself.

I had been trying to hold on to a marriage that no longer felt like a partnership.

And holding on wasn't always the same as protecting something valuable.

Sometimes it meant refusing to admit that the other person had already stopped holding on with you.

That was what I finally understood.

I wasn't going to measure my worth by whether Aaron chose me over Jasmine.

I wasn't going to treat another woman's disappointment as my victory.

And I wasn't going to make my future depend on winning back a man who had betrayed my trust.

For the first time, I could imagine saying those words without needing Jasmine to answer.

You can keep him.

Because the decision I was making wasn't about what she deserved.

It was about what I was no longer willing to accept.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: By the
