13 – I Had Spent Three Years Protecting Aaron’s Image, but Now I Had to Decide Whether There Was Anything Left Worth Protecting

I used to think the worst part of betrayal was finding out.

I was wrong.

The worst part was looking back and realizing how many times I had refused to believe what was already in front of me.

That was where I found myself after the Slack message.

Aaron had read my words.

Michael had shown him the tablet.

Hundreds of employees were discussing the affair.

And I was left with a question nobody else could answer.

What did I want now?

For years, I had known what I wanted.

I wanted Aaron to come home.

I wanted him to include me in his life.

I wanted to stop feeling embarrassed when Jasmine appeared beside him at another company event.

I wanted my husband to look at me and understand that something between us had gone terribly wrong.

Those wishes had seemed reasonable.

They were ordinary things to expect from a marriage.

But somewhere along the way, I had begun treating them like favors.

If Aaron came home when expected, I felt grateful.

If he told me where he was going, I felt relieved.

If he included me in a conversation about work, I felt as though I had been given something special.

Looking back, that makes me sad.

I had lowered my expectations so gradually that I hadn't noticed what was happening.

I wasn't asking for honesty anymore.

I was hoping for it.

I wasn't expecting companionship.

I was waiting for it.

And I wasn't living like a woman whose husband wanted to share his life with her.

I was living like someone afraid of asking whether she still belonged.

That was a difficult thing to admit.

I had always considered myself understanding.

Aaron worked hard.

His position carried responsibilities most people never had to think about.

He negotiated enormous contracts.

He dealt with experienced executives who wanted to outmaneuver him.

He made decisions that affected hundreds of employees.

I knew those responsibilities mattered.

I had never wanted to make his work harder.

But I had allowed that concern to become an excuse for accepting things that should never have been normal.

A demanding career could explain a late evening.

It couldn't explain an affair.

An important meeting could explain a missed dinner.

It couldn't explain why Jasmine had gradually replaced me at charity events.

And professional responsibilities couldn't explain why Aaron told people I preferred staying home when he hadn't even asked.

That last detail continued to bother me.

It was such a small sentence.

Claire liked staying home.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing that would make a room fall silent.

But it had allowed Aaron to explain my absence without admitting that our marriage was changing.

It made the situation sound mutual.

I hated that.

Because there had been nothing mutual about being left out.

I hadn't chosen it.

I hadn't agreed to it.

I had simply been expected to accept it.

And for too long, I had.

I thought about the people who had heard Aaron's explanation over the years.

Michael might have heard it.

Other colleagues probably had.

People attending charity galas might have wondered where I was.

And Aaron had been able to answer without appearing uncomfortable.

His wife preferred being home.

That was enough.

No questions.

No complications.

No reason for anyone to think something was wrong.

I wondered whether he had begun believing his own explanation.

Perhaps it was easier that way.

If I supposedly wanted to stay home, he didn't have to acknowledge that he had stopped inviting me.

If his assistant accompanied him for professional reasons, he didn't have to explain why she was appearing beside him so often.

If his work kept him away overnight, he didn't have to discuss what those absences were doing to our marriage.

Each explanation removed another uncomfortable question.

And I had helped him by remaining silent.

That was the part I needed to take responsibility for.

Not his affair.

Not his dishonesty.

Those belonged to him.

But my refusal to acknowledge my own unhappiness had kept me trapped.

I had known something was wrong.

I had felt it for years.

Yet I had continued arranging my thoughts around the possibility that everything would eventually improve.

Someday, his work would become less demanding.

Someday, he would include me again.

Someday, Jasmine would return to being simply the executive assistant I had once believed she was.

Someday, Aaron would understand.

I had been waiting for that someday.

Meanwhile, my actual life was passing.

That realization hurt more than I expected.

I wasn't angry only about the affair anymore.

I was grieving the time I had spent trying to preserve something without knowing whether Aaron wanted to preserve it, too.

Three years was a long time.

Long enough for a marriage to become unfamiliar.

Long enough for explanations to turn into habits.

Long enough for a woman to stop asking why her husband didn't come home.

The fifth night hadn't created those problems.

It had simply made them impossible to ignore.

I thought about the exact hour again.

3:17 a.m.

I remembered how tired I had been.

How angry.

How certain I couldn't continue pretending.

I had chosen a company-wide Slack channel because I wanted the truth to reach people Aaron couldn't easily dismiss.

I wanted his colleagues to know that I hadn't willingly stepped aside.

I wanted the silence surrounding our marriage to end.

And it had ended.

But the relief hadn't lasted the way I expected.

Public attention was loud.

The emptiness underneath it was quiet.

Once the message was sent, I still had to face the same questions.

Did I trust Aaron?

No.

Did I believe another explanation would repair the damage?

No.

Did I know what life without him would look like?

Not yet.

That last answer frightened me.

I could recognize that our marriage was broken without knowing exactly what I wanted to do next.

I had to give myself permission to acknowledge that uncertainty.

For years, I had treated uncertainty as something shameful.

If I couldn't prove what Aaron was doing, I told myself I shouldn't be suspicious.

If I couldn't explain why he excluded me, I wondered whether I was being unreasonable.

If I didn't know what would happen after confronting him, I convinced myself to remain quiet.

I had allowed the absence of perfect answers to prevent me from acting.

I couldn't do that anymore.

I knew enough.

I knew about the affair.

I knew the excuses.

I knew the nights away.

I knew how I felt when another woman accompanied my husband to events where I had once stood beside him.

Those things were real.

I didn't need to know every conversation between Aaron and Jasmine to acknowledge them.

I didn't need a detailed explanation of every evening he had been absent.

And I didn't need the approval of five hundred employees before deciding that my feelings mattered.

That was an important change.

Before the message, I had imagined that public acknowledgment might settle something inside me.

Perhaps people would understand.

Perhaps Aaron would finally feel ashamed.

Perhaps the affair would stop seeming like a secret I was forced to carry alone.

Some of those things might happen.

Others might not.

But none of them could decide what kind of future I wanted.

I had to make that decision myself.

I thought about Michael.

Eleven years beside Aaron.

He had watched him handle enormous business responsibilities.

He had seen the confidence that made difficult negotiations look almost effortless.

He had also watched Aaron become increasingly careless.

Michael wasn't a marriage counselor.

He had no obligation to repair what had happened between us.

But after my message, he could no longer pretend the situation was entirely separate from the company.

That was the consequence Aaron was now facing.

His professional life and personal behavior had collided.

I understood why that mattered.

An executive assistant wasn't simply someone outside the business.

Jasmine worked directly with him.

Their relationship existed in a setting where other employees could see their interactions.

And Aaron had brought her to public professional events while explaining my absence in misleading terms.

Those choices created consequences beyond our home.

I didn't know how the company would handle them.

I wasn't going to invent decisions that hadn't been made.

But I understood that Michael would have to consider the business.

That was his responsibility.

Mine was different.

I needed to consider my own life.

Not Aaron's reputation.

Not the company's embarrassment.

Not whether Jasmine felt uncomfortable.

My life.

That sounded selfish at first.

I had spent so long putting other people's comfort ahead of my own that even thinking about my needs felt unfamiliar.

But wanting honesty wasn't selfish.

Wanting respect wasn't selfish.

Wanting a marriage where I didn't dread another overnight absence wasn't selfish.

Those were basic things.

I should never have had to convince myself that I deserved them.

I thought about the woman I had been before Aaron's absences became part of my life.

I hadn't always been suspicious.

I hadn't always measured my mood against whether my husband answered a message.

I hadn't always wondered what another woman possessed that I lacked.

Those habits had developed slowly.

Each one had seemed like a small adjustment.

Together, they had changed the way I saw myself.

I wanted that to stop.

I didn't know whether Aaron would acknowledge the affair honestly.

I didn't know whether he would regret hurting me or simply resent the public embarrassment.

I didn't know whether Jasmine would ever recognize what her relationship with him had cost.

But I was beginning to understand that those answers couldn't be the foundation of my next decision.

I couldn't wait for everyone else to behave correctly before choosing how I wanted to live.

That had been my mistake for years.

I had waited for Aaron.

Then I had waited for explanations.

Then I had waited for circumstances to improve.

And by the fifth night, waiting had become the entire shape of my marriage.

I didn't want another year like that.

I didn't want another month.

I didn't even want another evening spent convincing myself that silence was the same as patience.

Something had to change.

And for the first time, I understood that the change might have to begin with me.

Not by becoming more accommodating.

Not by competing with Jasmine.

Not by finding another way to embarrass Aaron.

By deciding what I would no longer accept.

That decision was quieter than the Slack message.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody witnessed it.

There was no tablet being turned around.

No company channel.

No audience.

Just the realization that I was allowed to stop protecting a marriage that wasn't protecting me.

I had spent years preserving Aaron's public image.

Now I needed to protect something more important.

My ability to recognize my own worth without waiting for my husband to confirm it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Kept Wondering What Michael Saw in Aaron That Morning, Until I Realized His
