11 – When I Thought About Facing Jasmine, I Realized the Questions I Wanted to Ask Her Were Really Questions My Husband Owed Me Answers To

I used to imagine that confronting Jasmine would make everything clearer.

I thought she might explain something Aaron wouldn't.

I thought she might tell me when the relationship changed.

I thought she might reveal why my husband had begun staying away.

But the more I considered speaking to her, the less I believed those answers would help.

The problem wasn't simply that Jasmine had become involved with a married man.

The problem was that Aaron had chosen to betray the marriage he shared with me.

That distinction took me years to understand.

For a long time, I had focused on Jasmine because she was easier to blame.

I didn't have a lifetime of memories with her.

I hadn't trusted her with my future.

I hadn't built my expectations around her promises.

I didn't love her.

Anger toward Jasmine required nothing from me except anger.

Anger toward Aaron was different.

It forced me to question everything I believed about my marriage.

It made me remember the man I had trusted.

It made me wonder when he stopped treating me as his partner.

And it made me confront the possibility that I had been holding on to a relationship that no longer existed in the form I remembered.

That was frightening.

So I had looked toward Jasmine.

The woman who accompanied him to charity galas.

The assistant who spent long hours near him.

The person whose name had become connected to so many of my doubts.

I told myself that if I understood her role, I would understand what happened to us.

But the truth was simpler.

Aaron had made choices.

And those choices belonged to him.

I kept thinking about the difference between a professional relationship and an affair.

When Jasmine was simply his executive assistant, there was nothing inherently wrong with her working closely with him.

Her job required it.

I had understood that from the beginning.

A CEO relied on people who knew his schedule and helped manage his responsibilities.

Long working hours weren't unusual.

Neither were business dinners or public events.

That was why I had been reluctant to question anything.

I didn't want ordinary professional contact to become a reason for suspicion.

I wanted to trust my husband.

I wanted to believe he understood the boundaries of our marriage.

And I wanted to avoid becoming someone who treated every woman around him as a threat.

Those had been reasonable hopes.

But reasonable hopes didn't change what eventually happened.

Jasmine was no longer merely his assistant in the story of our marriage.

She was the woman involved in his affair.

And I had been left facing the consequences.

I thought about the first time I learned she had accompanied him somewhere I had once expected to go.

I had tried not to react.

I told myself there was probably a professional reason.

I reminded myself that Aaron's responsibilities were complicated.

I considered how difficult it might be to balance his work with our marriage.

And then I accepted his explanation.

Again.

That became a pattern.

I considered Aaron's circumstances before I considered my feelings.

I looked for reasons he might have behaved as he did.

I tried to be understanding.

And somewhere along the way, I stopped asking whether he was being understanding toward me.

That was the part that made me sad.

I had wanted our marriage to be fair.

Not perfectly equal in every moment.

Life didn't work that way.

Sometimes one person needed more support.

Sometimes one person's work created unusual demands.

Sometimes plans changed.

I understood all of that.

But supporting a spouse wasn't supposed to require accepting dishonesty.

It wasn't supposed to mean becoming invisible.

It wasn't supposed to leave one person alone for five nights, wondering what explanation might come next.

I had confused compromise with surrender.

And I had surrendered more than I realized.

I looked back at the things I had stopped expecting.

Invitations.

Honest explanations.

The feeling that Aaron wanted me beside him.

The ordinary reassurance that came from being included in another person's life.

I hadn't stopped wanting those things.

I had simply stopped asking.

Because asking had become painful.

Every request reminded me of how much had changed.

And every disappointment made me a little more reluctant to try again.

By the time I sent the Slack message, I wasn't asking Aaron to include me in a dinner.

I was demanding that the truth stop being hidden.

That was how far our marriage had moved from the life I thought we were building.

The realization hurt.

I thought about what I might say if Jasmine stood in front of me.

I could accuse her.

I could tell her how many nights I had spent waiting.

I could describe how it felt to know she attended events while people were told I preferred staying home.

I could ask whether she ever thought about me.

Whether she considered the effect of the affair.

Whether she understood that I was a real person, not merely an inconvenience in Aaron's life.

Those questions were natural.

But they didn't change the central truth.

Jasmine couldn't explain why Aaron had stopped honoring his promises.

Only Aaron could explain his own decisions.

And even his explanation might not make those decisions acceptable.

I was beginning to understand that an answer didn't always create a solution.

Someone could tell you why they hurt you.

You could listen.

You could understand the circumstances.

And you could still decide that what happened was something you couldn't continue living with.

I hadn't allowed myself to consider that before.

I had treated understanding as the first step toward forgiveness.

I thought that if I could make sense of Aaron's behavior, I would find a way to accept it.

But there were things I could understand without excusing.

A demanding career.

A changing marriage.

A person developing feelings they hadn't expected.

Those things might explain difficult circumstances.

They didn't justify dishonesty.

They didn't justify letting a wife believe something that wasn't true.

And they didn't justify repeatedly staying away while refusing to address the damage being done.

I didn't know what Aaron would eventually say about the affair.

I didn't know whether he would apologize.

I didn't know whether he would attempt to explain it through his work, his feelings, or the difficulties in our marriage.

But I knew something important.

I didn't have to accept an explanation simply because he offered one.

For years, I had treated his words as the end of every disagreement.

If he said a meeting ran late, I tried to believe him.

If he said I preferred staying home, I wondered whether I had somehow given him that impression.

If he acted as though an absence wasn't serious, I questioned whether I was making too much of it.

That habit had damaged my ability to trust my own reactions.

I was done with it.

I could listen without surrendering my judgment.

I could recognize his feelings without erasing mine.

And I could acknowledge our history without pretending it guaranteed a future together.

That last thought frightened me.

Because I still loved parts of the life we had shared.

I didn't want to deny that.

There had been good years.

There had been reasons I married him.

I had once been proud to stand beside Aaron.

I had believed his confidence came from knowing who he was and what mattered to him.

I had trusted his ability to make difficult decisions.

But confidence wasn't the same as integrity.

And success wasn't the same as faithfulness.

Those were lessons I hadn't expected to learn from my own husband.

I thought about the employees who had seen my message.

Some of them might have known Aaron only as the CEO.

They might have admired his ability to negotiate contracts.

They might have respected the way he handled difficult business situations.

Those accomplishments didn't become imaginary because he had betrayed me.

But they also didn't erase the betrayal.

Two things could be true.

He could be capable at work.

And careless with his marriage.

He could be respected professionally.

And still have hurt someone who trusted him.

He could be accustomed to controlling difficult situations.

And still be unable to undo what he had done.

I hoped Michael understood that distinction.

He had worked with Aaron for eleven years.

He had seen the best parts of his professional life.

He had also watched the personal changes become increasingly obvious.

Now he was dealing with a workplace where employees were discussing the CEO's marriage.

That wasn't a position I would have wanted to place anyone in.

I could acknowledge that.

But I couldn't change the fact that the affair had become public.

The message existed.

Aaron had read it.

The company had been discussing it.

And I had to decide what I wanted to do with the truth now that it was no longer hidden.

I didn't want another public fight.

I didn't want to turn every workplace conversation into a discussion of my marriage.

I didn't want employees feeling that they had to choose between their CEO and his wife.

That wasn't their responsibility.

The next decision belonged to me.

Not the company.

Not Michael.

Not Jasmine.

Me.

I needed to decide what remaining married to Aaron would mean.

Would I be able to believe him when he said he was working late?

Would I feel comfortable when he attended another formal event?

Would I hear Jasmine's name without remembering the affair?

Would I ever again trust that his explanations were honest?

I tried to imagine saying yes.

I couldn't.

Not then.

Perhaps trust could be rebuilt in some marriages.

I knew that happened.

But it required honesty and effort.

It required the person who broke the trust to recognize the damage and take responsibility for repairing it.

I couldn't do that work for Aaron.

I had already tried to carry too much.

That realization brought me back to Jasmine.

For years, I had imagined her as someone I needed to defeat.

Someone whose presence threatened my place.

Someone I had to convince to leave my husband alone.

But I no longer wanted that role.

I wasn't going to compete.

I wasn't going to beg.

I wasn't going to make another woman responsible for deciding whether Aaron treated me properly.

He had already made choices that told me something about the marriage.

Now I had to decide what those choices meant for my future.

I thought again about the words I had begun forming in my mind.

You can keep him.

They no longer sounded like an attempt to punish Jasmine.

They sounded like a refusal to keep fighting for someone who had not protected the relationship himself.

I didn't know when I would say them.

I didn't know how she would respond.

But I understood what I meant.

I wasn't offering Aaron as though he belonged to me.

He didn't.

People weren't possessions.

Marriage wasn't ownership.

And fidelity meant nothing if it existed only because someone was constantly trying to prevent betrayal.

I wanted a husband who chose to remain faithful.

Not one I had to compete to keep.

That was the truth I had finally reached.

And once I understood it, the question of whether Jasmine could take Aaron from me seemed less important.

The question was whether I still wanted to hold on to a marriage in which Aaron had already chosen to betray my trust.

I couldn't avoid that question anymore.
