10 – I Kept Remembering the Charity Galas Where Jasmine Stood Beside My Husband and Everyone Was Told I Had Chosen Not to Come

The hardest memories weren't always the dramatic ones.

Sometimes they were ordinary.

A dinner I hadn't attended.

A conversation I hadn't been included in.

A charity event where Aaron arrived with Jasmine while people were told I wanted to stay home.

Those memories had become more painful than I expected.

Because each one showed me how slowly my marriage had changed.

There hadn't been a single announcement.

Aaron hadn't sat me down and explained that he no longer wanted me beside him.

He hadn't told me Jasmine was becoming more important to him.

He hadn't admitted that our relationship was turning into something I barely recognized.

Instead, he had made small changes.

And I had accepted them one at a time.

That was how the distance grew.

I could remember when I still expected to hear about an evening with colleagues.

Aaron worked long hours.

I understood that informal dinners were sometimes part of professional life.

Those gatherings helped people build relationships.

They gave colleagues a chance to talk away from formal meetings.

I had never expected to attend every one.

But there was a difference between occasionally staying home and no longer being invited.

At first, I told myself it wasn't important.

Perhaps the dinner was strictly for employees.

Perhaps the plans had changed.

Perhaps Aaron assumed I wouldn't enjoy the evening.

I could always find a reason.

I was good at that.

I had become so good at explaining his behavior that I rarely stopped to consider how I felt about it.

And what I felt was increasingly simple.

Unwanted.

I didn't want to admit that word.

It made the problem sound too serious.

It suggested that the distance between Aaron and me wasn't temporary.

That frightened me.

So I kept using softer words.

Busy.

Distracted.

Preoccupied.

Those words allowed me to believe that the man I married would return when his schedule became less demanding.

But Aaron's schedule wasn't the whole problem.

Jasmine was appearing beside him.

Not only during ordinary workdays.

At charity galas.

Public events.

Places where people noticed who arrived together.

I had once belonged beside him at occasions like those.

Then gradually, I didn't.

I wondered how the change looked to people who knew us.

Perhaps they thought I had grown tired of attending.

Perhaps they accepted Aaron's explanation without questioning it.

Why wouldn't they?

He was the CEO.

He was confident.

He knew how to speak in a way that made people believe he understood a situation completely.

If he told someone his wife preferred staying home, the explanation probably sounded reasonable.

I hated that.

Not because the employees had done anything wrong.

They had no reason to question every word their CEO said about his marriage.

I hated it because Aaron had used my supposed preferences to conceal a choice he had made without me.

He had made my absence sound voluntary.

I still remembered how much I wanted someone to ask me directly.

Not because I needed sympathy.

Not because I wanted to create trouble.

I simply wanted the opportunity to say that I hadn't chosen to disappear.

I hadn't stopped caring.

I hadn't decided I no longer wanted to share my husband's public life.

I had been excluded.

But nobody could know that unless I said something.

And I hadn't.

For years.

I thought remaining silent was protecting my dignity.

I thought public discussions about our marriage would make me look foolish.

I thought I should handle problems privately.

Those weren't unreasonable beliefs.

But in practice, they had meant that Aaron's explanations remained unchallenged.

I had treated his reputation as something I was responsible for preserving.

Even while his behavior damaged my trust in him.

That contradiction was painful to recognize.

I had worried about embarrassing the man who was embarrassing me.

I had protected the image of a marriage that no longer felt honest.

And every time I stayed quiet, it became a little easier for Aaron to continue.

I didn't know whether he interpreted my silence as agreement.

I couldn't know what he told himself.

But I knew what the silence had accomplished.

Nothing changed.

That was the part I couldn't escape.

The first missed dinner didn't lead to an explanation that satisfied me.

The first charity gala with Jasmine didn't restore my confidence.

The first night away didn't make Aaron reconsider the distance between us.

The situation simply continued.

And each time, I had to decide whether to question him again.

Eventually, I grew tired of asking.

That wasn't acceptance.

It was exhaustion.

There was a difference.

I remembered listening to Aaron talk about business.

He understood complicated matters.

He could see connections that other people missed.

He could make decisions involving enormous amounts of money.

He could negotiate with executives who had spent decades learning how to protect their own interests.

I had admired those abilities.

I still recognized them.

But I began to resent the contrast between his professional attention and his carelessness at home.

How could someone be so observant in one part of life and so indifferent in another?

I used to ask myself that question as though the answer might excuse him.

Perhaps his work consumed all his attention.

Perhaps he didn't realize how much I was hurting.

Perhaps he thought I understood.

But the longer I considered those possibilities, the less convincing they became.

Aaron knew how to recognize when something mattered.

He knew how to respond when a business relationship was at risk.

He knew that ignoring a serious problem could make it worse.

Yet he had allowed our marriage to grow increasingly distant.

I couldn't make sense of that without admitting something painful.

He hadn't been giving our marriage the same importance he gave his work.

And I had been accepting that.

I thought about Michael again.

He had worked beside Aaron for eleven years.

He had watched him negotiate billion-dollar contracts.

He had seen him remain calm during hostile business situations.

And over the previous three years, Michael had also noticed Aaron becoming careless.

I wondered what it had been like to watch that change from the outside.

Perhaps it happened so gradually that nobody thought much of it at first.

Aaron stopped inviting Claire to dinners.

Then Jasmine began accompanying him to galas.

Then he stopped making much effort to explain his absences.

Each change might have seemed small until they were viewed together.

That was exactly how I had experienced them.

Only I had been living with the emotional consequences.

I wasn't looking at a business problem.

I was trying to understand why my husband no longer seemed to want me around.

I felt foolish remembering how often I had made excuses.

Not because trusting a spouse was foolish.

It wasn't.

But because I had continued protecting Aaron's explanations even after they stopped making sense.

I had been afraid of what would happen if I stopped believing him.

That was the truth.

I thought questioning him too directly might force us to confront something neither of us could repair.

So I accepted uncertainty instead.

It seemed safer.

It wasn't.

Uncertainty had slowly changed the way I lived.

I could no longer hear about a company event without wondering whether Jasmine would attend.

I couldn't think about Aaron working late without remembering the nights he stayed away.

I couldn't look at my husband's professional success without feeling the distance between the man everyone admired and the man I knew at home.

That wasn't the life I wanted.

I didn't want to resent his work.

I didn't want to dread hearing his assistant's name.

I didn't want to spend evenings imagining conversations I wasn't part of.

And I didn't want to become someone who measured her worth against another woman's proximity to her husband.

But that was what had happened.

I had allowed Aaron's choices to shape how I viewed myself.

If he didn't invite me, I wondered what was wrong with me.

If he took Jasmine, I wondered what she offered that I didn't.

If he stayed away, I wondered whether I had become someone he no longer wanted to come home to.

Those thoughts were cruel.

And I had directed them toward myself.

I could see that now.

The affair didn't mean I lacked something essential.

It meant Aaron had betrayed our marriage.

Those were different things.

I wished I had understood that earlier.

It would have saved me so many nights of self-doubt.

It would have helped me recognize that I couldn't make another person faithful by becoming more agreeable.

I couldn't guarantee honesty by asking fewer questions.

I couldn't preserve a marriage by pretending its problems didn't exist.

And I couldn't make Jasmine disappear by blaming myself for Aaron's decisions.

That was why the idea of confronting her had begun to change.

At first, I imagined asking her questions.

Why Aaron?

Why involve yourself with a married man?

Why stand beside him while his wife was slowly being pushed aside?

Those questions came from pain.

I understood that.

But even if she answered every one, I would still have to face Aaron's choices.

He had been the person who made promises to me.

He had been the person who knew our marriage from the inside.

He had been the person who could have told me the truth.

Instead, he allowed the situation to continue.

That realization shifted something inside me.

I no longer wanted to prove I was better than Jasmine.

I no longer wanted to convince her to leave him alone.

I no longer wanted to compete for a place that should never have become a competition.

I wanted to stop.

There was a quiet kind of pain in reaching that decision.

It didn't feel victorious.

It felt like admitting that something I had worked hard to protect was already badly damaged.

But it also felt necessary.

Because the more I thought about those charity galas, the clearer the truth became.

I hadn't lost my place beside Aaron because I wasn't good enough.

He had stopped treating that place as something worth protecting.

That was his failure.

Not mine.

And I was finally beginning to understand that I didn't have to spend the rest of my life trying to correct it for him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: When I Thought About Facing Jasmine, I
