9 – After Everyone at Aaron’s Company Learned About the Affair, I Realized Public Embarrassment Could Never Give Me Back the Trust I Had Lost

I had imagined that telling the truth would make me feel stronger.

Instead, I felt tired.

Not the kind of tired that disappeared after a good night's sleep.

It was deeper than that.

It came from years of trying to understand a man who had stopped giving me honest answers.

Aaron was still my husband.

Jasmine was still his executive assistant.

Michael still had a company to help run.

And five hundred employees had been given a glimpse into a marriage that had been falling apart long before my message appeared.

Nothing about those facts had become easier.

I kept thinking about what I had done at 3:17 that morning.

There had been a moment when pressing send felt like taking back control.

For once, I hadn't been the person waiting.

I hadn't been the person wondering where Aaron was.

I hadn't been the person trying to decide whether another explanation sounded believable.

I had made a decision.

And everyone who read the message knew I had made it.

But public attention was a strange thing.

It could make a private injury visible.

It couldn't make the injury disappear.

I understood that more clearly as I thought about the hours following the message.

I had wanted Aaron to feel the weight of what he had done.

I wanted him to understand what it meant to be embarrassed by someone you had trusted.

I wanted him to know what it felt like when other people could see something you wished had never happened.

There was anger in those wishes.

I wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

I had loved Aaron.

I had believed him.

I had defended him, even when his behavior made me feel foolish.

Then I had reached a point where I wanted him to experience even a small part of the humiliation I had carried.

That wasn't the person I had expected to become.

I had once believed I would handle betrayal quietly.

I thought I would have a serious conversation.

Maybe cry.

Maybe ask difficult questions.

Then decide what to do.

I had imagined myself calm.

Reasonable.

Controlled.

But real pain hadn't followed the picture I had created.

Real pain was five nights without my husband coming home.

It was watching Jasmine stand beside him at public events.

It was discovering that he had been telling people I preferred staying home.

It was feeling as though the place I occupied in his life was being slowly given away.

And it was waking up to the knowledge that I no longer trusted the person I had married.

The Slack message had come after all of that.

It wasn't the beginning of the damage.

It was a reaction to damage that had already happened.

Still, I had to acknowledge the effect of my decision.

Those five hundred employees weren't responsible for my marriage.

They hadn't promised to remain faithful to me.

They hadn't chosen to exclude me from dinners.

They hadn't spent nights away while I waited for answers.

Yet I had brought my pain into their workplace.

I couldn't pretend that was a small thing.

Some of those employees might have been uncomfortable reading the message.

Some might have wondered whether it belonged there.

Others might have recognized what had been happening around Aaron for years.

I didn't know.

I hadn't spoken with each of them.

And I had no right to invent their reactions simply because I wanted everyone to understand me.

That was another uncomfortable realization.

I couldn't control what people believed after I told the truth.

I could only control whether I continued telling it.

For years, Aaron had shaped the explanation for my absence.

Claire preferred staying home.

Such a simple sentence.

It made him sound considerate.

It made me sound independent.

It made our growing distance look like an arrangement we had both accepted.

But I hadn't accepted it.

I hadn't been asked.

And there was something especially cruel about hearing my supposed wishes used to justify my exclusion.

Aaron had been able to make that explanation sound reasonable because nobody knew what was happening inside our marriage.

I had helped preserve that appearance.

Not deliberately at first.

I had simply wanted to avoid embarrassment.

I thought if people noticed our problems, it would make everything worse.

So I stayed quiet.

And Aaron continued living in a way that made my silence more painful.

I wondered whether Michael remembered those explanations.

He had worked beside Aaron for eleven years.

He knew how my husband behaved when he was under pressure.

He knew how carefully Aaron could handle complicated business negotiations.

He had watched the change in Aaron's personal behavior over the previous three years.

I wondered whether he had ever looked at Jasmine beside Aaron and thought about me.

Perhaps he had.

Perhaps he hadn't.

I couldn't know.

And I was beginning to understand that I didn't need to know.

Michael wasn't the person who had made promises to me.

His responsibility was to the company.

Mine was to decide what I could live with.

That distinction had become important.

I had spent so much time thinking about what other people saw that I had almost forgotten to think about what I wanted.

Did I want Aaron to apologize?

Of course.

Did I want him to admit he had hurt me?

Yes.

Did I want to know why he had chosen Jasmine?

Part of me still did.

But beneath those questions was something harder.

Even if Aaron gave me every answer, would I trust him?

I thought about it carefully.

I wanted the answer to be yes.

I wanted to believe there was some explanation that would make the previous three years less painful.

Something that would allow me to look at him without remembering the nights he had stayed away.

Something that would make the charity galas seem harmless again.

Something that would erase the humiliation of being replaced in public.

But no explanation could undo what had already happened.

The nights were real.

The affair was real.

And the distance between us had been growing for years.

I couldn't pretend those things were misunderstandings.

I had done enough pretending.

I thought about the first night Aaron hadn't come home.

I remembered how quickly I had reached for a reasonable explanation.

He worked hard.

His schedule was unpredictable.

There were people depending on him.

I had used those facts as protection against the possibility that something was wrong.

By the second night, I was uneasy.

By the third, I was angry.

By the fourth, I was already questioning whether I had any reason to believe what he told me.

And by the fifth, the question wasn't where he had been.

It was why I was still allowing myself to live this way.

That was what had changed.

I hadn't suddenly stopped loving Aaron.

Love wasn't something I could turn off because a terrible fact became undeniable.

I still remembered the man I had married.

I remembered being proud when people spoke about his achievements.

I remembered feeling that his success belonged to a future we were building together.

Those memories remained.

But I was beginning to understand that memories couldn't carry a marriage by themselves.

There had to be honesty in the present.

There had to be consideration.

There had to be a willingness to recognize when the other person was hurting.

Aaron hadn't shown me those things.

Not in the ways that mattered.

And I couldn't make up the difference by loving him harder.

That thought stayed with me.

I had spent years believing that if I was understanding enough, the marriage would improve.

If I didn't complain about missed dinners, perhaps he would appreciate my patience.

If I didn't question Jasmine's presence, perhaps he would recognize my trust.

If I accepted his demanding schedule, perhaps he would make time for me when things became easier.

But things hadn't become easier.

They had become worse.

One missed evening became another.

One explanation became another.

One absence became five nights.

I had been waiting for a future that Aaron wasn't helping create.

I could see that now.

And it hurt.

Because I had wanted our marriage to succeed.

I hadn't wanted to expose him.

I hadn't wanted five hundred employees discussing the most painful part of my life.

I hadn't wanted Michael holding a tablet while Aaron read what his wife had written.

None of those things resembled the marriage I had hoped for.

They were the consequences of something that had already gone terribly wrong.

I realized I needed to separate two questions.

Was I justified in being hurt?

Yes.

Had the public message repaired anything?

No.

Those answers could exist together.

I didn't need to deny my pain to acknowledge that exposing it publicly had complicated consequences.

And I didn't need to apologize for feeling betrayed simply because other people had become aware of it.

I could accept responsibility for my actions without taking responsibility for Aaron's affair.

That was an important distinction.

For years, I had carried responsibilities that weren't mine.

I had tried to make his absences understandable.

I had tried to protect his reputation.

I had tried to behave as though his choices were somehow connected to my shortcomings.

But fidelity wasn't something I could provide on his behalf.

Honesty wasn't something I could produce for both of us.

A marriage required two people willing to protect it.

I had been trying to do the work alone.

I no longer wanted to.

I thought about the phrase I had been working toward in my own mind.

You can keep him.

At first, those words had sounded bitter.

They sounded like something a woman might say when she wanted to hurt another woman.

But I was beginning to hear something different in them.

I didn't want to fight Jasmine for Aaron.

I didn't want to convince her that I deserved him more.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my life competing for the attention of a man who had already made his choices.

I wanted to stop competing.

That was all.

I was tired of feeling as though I needed to prove I deserved a place in my own marriage.

I was tired of comparing myself with his assistant.

I was tired of wondering whether Aaron would come home.

And I was tired of waiting for another explanation to make things feel normal.

Normal had disappeared a long time ago.

I had simply refused to acknowledge it.

That was the decision forming inside me after the message.

Not another public accusation.

Not another attempt to embarrass Aaron.

Not another effort to make his employees choose sides.

I wanted my life to stop revolving around what he did next.

I didn't yet know what that would require.

But I knew it would begin with something I had avoided for years.

Accepting that the marriage I remembered was not the marriage I was living in.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Kept Remembering the
