7 – I Had Wanted Aaron to Understand the Damage He Caused, but His Company Could Not Repair the Marriage We Had Allowed to Fall Apart

I made one mistake after posting the message.

I expected being heard to feel like being understood.

They weren't the same thing.

Five hundred employees could see what I had written.

Michael could place the message directly in front of Aaron.

People inside the company could discuss the affair before the first executive meeting.

But none of that meant Aaron would understand what he had done to me.

The more I thought about it, the clearer that became.

Public attention could expose a problem.

It couldn't repair the trust that had been destroyed.

I had spent too many years hoping something outside our marriage would finally make Aaron change.

Perhaps a difficult conversation would make him listen.

Perhaps seeing how upset I was would make him reconsider.

Perhaps one of his colleagues would notice the distance between us and ask why I wasn't attending events anymore.

I hadn't admitted those hopes to anyone.

I barely admitted them to myself.

They were embarrassing.

Because underneath them was a simple wish.

I wanted someone else to make Aaron care.

I wanted him to see what I was feeling without my having to explain it again.

I wanted the man who could understand complicated business negotiations to recognize something as ordinary as his wife's unhappiness.

It shouldn't have required a company-wide message.

It shouldn't have required five nights away.

It shouldn't have required another woman becoming a visible part of his professional life.

But that was where we were.

The thought made me sadder than I expected.

I had spent so much energy being angry that I hadn't allowed myself to acknowledge the sadness underneath it.

I missed having a husband I trusted.

Not merely someone whose name was connected to mine.

Not someone who appeared successful in public.

I missed the feeling that I could ask a question and receive an honest answer.

I missed knowing I had a place beside him.

I missed the ordinary confidence that our marriage mattered to both of us.

Those things were gone.

And I didn't know whether they could return.

I thought about Michael again.

He had watched Aaron for eleven years.

That was longer than many people stayed in a single job.

Long enough to understand how a person behaved under pressure.

Michael knew that Aaron could make difficult decisions.

He knew Aaron had survived hostile business situations.

He knew the company had trusted him with enormous responsibilities.

But leadership in one part of life didn't guarantee character in another.

That was the uncomfortable truth surrounding the message.

Aaron's professional accomplishments were real.

So was the damage he had done to our marriage.

One didn't erase the other.

I didn't want people pretending Aaron had never been good at his job.

That wasn't the point.

He had been capable.

Confident.

Successful.

Those were qualities Michael had seen for years.

But they didn't give Aaron permission to treat his wife carelessly.

And they didn't erase the questions created by his relationship with his executive assistant.

The company had responsibilities of its own.

The employees deserved leadership that didn't allow personal problems to overwhelm their work.

Michael understood that the Slack message had become a business concern.

He couldn't simply look away because Aaron preferred to keep his marriage separate from the company.

At the same time, I understood that the company wasn't responsible for fixing what happened between Aaron and me.

That distinction became important.

I had put the truth in front of hundreds of people.

But I couldn't hand them the burden of deciding what happened next.

They weren't my family.

They weren't my marriage counselors.

They were employees who had unexpectedly become witnesses to something deeply personal.

I had to accept that.

It wasn't comfortable.

I knew some people would think I had gone too far.

I understood why.

If I had been an employee reading about my CEO's marriage in a workplace channel, I might have been uncomfortable, too.

I could acknowledge that without taking back the truth.

I could admit that the method was public and painful.

I could recognize that other people had been drawn into the situation.

And I could still believe that Aaron's behavior had been wrong.

More than one thing could be true.

That was something I was learning.

For years, I had treated our disagreements as though one of us had to be entirely right and the other entirely wrong.

If Aaron was under pressure at work, perhaps I wasn't allowed to be upset about his absences.

If Jasmine had legitimate responsibilities as his assistant, perhaps I wasn't allowed to question why she accompanied him to charity events.

If he told people I preferred staying home, perhaps I was supposed to act as though that explained everything.

I had made those connections myself.

No one had forced me to reason that way.

But it had become a habit.

And the habit had left me unable to say something simple.

I was unhappy.

I had been unhappy for a long time.

It didn't matter whether Aaron could explain some of the circumstances surrounding his decisions.

Those explanations didn't make the affair acceptable.

They didn't make the exclusion harmless.

They didn't make the fifth night any less painful.

I had the right to acknowledge what was happening to me.

I wished I had understood that before the message.

Perhaps I would have made different decisions sooner.

Perhaps I would have stopped waiting after the second night instead of the fifth.

Perhaps I would have refused to accept the explanation about preferring to stay home.

I couldn't change any of that now.

Those evenings had already passed.

All I could do was decide whether I wanted to keep living the same way.

The question frightened me.

Because leaving an unhappy situation sounded simple when I thought about someone else's life.

I would tell a friend she deserved better.

I would remind her that marriage required honesty from both people.

I would ask why she was accepting excuses that made her feel increasingly alone.

But when I turned those questions toward myself, I became uncertain.

Aaron wasn't just a man who had hurt me.

He was my husband.

We had a history together.

I remembered a time when I didn't question whether he wanted me beside him.

I remembered what it felt like to be included.

And part of me still wanted to believe that man existed somewhere beneath the person he had become.

That hope had kept me waiting.

It had also kept me from seeing how much had changed.

I couldn't build a future on memories alone.

I was beginning to understand that.

A marriage needed something in the present.

Honesty.

Effort.

Respect.

The willingness to confront painful truths without turning every conversation into a contest.

I hadn't been receiving those things.

And I couldn't supply them for both of us.

I thought about Aaron looking at Michael's tablet.

He was accustomed to receiving reports and making decisions.

A problem was placed in front of him.

He examined it.

He decided what needed to happen.

Then the people around him carried out the plan.

I wondered whether he would approach our marriage in the same way.

As though there was a problem to manage rather than a person he had hurt.

I hoped he wouldn't.

But I wasn't going to assume he would suddenly understand.

I had done too much assuming already.

I needed to judge him by his choices.

Not by what I hoped those choices meant.

That was another painful lesson.

For years, I had interpreted the smallest signs of consideration as evidence that everything could still be repaired.

A kind word could make me forget a difficult evening.

A brief explanation could quiet my questions.

A promise could keep me patient for weeks.

But nothing substantial had changed.

Jasmine remained close to him.

I remained excluded.

And the nights away continued until I reached the fifth one.

I couldn't keep treating temporary reassurance as lasting change.

It was exhausting.

I had spent so long waiting for Aaron to return to the husband I remembered that I hadn't noticed how little of my own life felt peaceful anymore.

Even when he was home, I wondered what he wasn't telling me.

Even when he spoke about work, I listened for Jasmine's name.

Even when I tried to act normally, part of my attention remained fixed on the things I didn't know.

That wasn't how I wanted to live.

I didn't want to become someone who spent every evening watching for signs of another betrayal.

I didn't want my marriage to turn me into a person I didn't recognize.

And I didn't want to hate Jasmine so much that I forgot Aaron was the one who had made promises to me.

He had chosen his behavior.

I had to choose mine.

The public message was one choice.

It wasn't the last one.

I understood now that exposing the affair had only brought the truth into the open.

The more difficult work was deciding what that truth meant for my future.

Could I continue living with Aaron?

Could I believe him again?

Would I ever feel comfortable standing beside him at a company event?

Would I look across a room and wonder whether the people around us remembered my message?

I didn't know.

Those questions were real, but I wasn't ready to answer them all.

I only knew I couldn't return to pretending.

That was the boundary I had finally reached.

Whatever happened at the company, whatever Michael said, and whatever Aaron did in response, the marriage couldn't continue under the old arrangement.

Not with me silently accepting his decisions.

Not with Jasmine occupying the place I had once held while I pretended not to notice.

Not with another night away followed by another explanation.

I had spent too much of myself trying to preserve a marriage that Aaron was not protecting.

The company might recover from the embarrassment.

Its employees might eventually move on to ordinary business.

But I would still have to live with what happened.

That was why I needed to stop waiting for five hundred other people to make sense of my life.

They could discuss Aaron's behavior.

They could question his judgment.

They could decide what they thought of the man leading their company.

But they couldn't decide whether I trusted my husband.

Only I could do that.

And by then, the answer was painful and clear.

I didn't.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Stopped Thinking of Jasmine as the Woman I Had to Defeat and Began Facing
