6 – The Woman Who Had Taken My Place Beside Aaron Was Still His Executive Assistant, but I Was Done Treating Her Presence as Something Harmless

I had spent a long time trying not to dislike Jasmine Cole.

That probably sounds foolish now.

But it was true.

When I first became aware of how much time she spent with Aaron, I reminded myself that she was doing her job.

An executive assistant needed to know her employer's schedule.

She needed to attend meetings.

She needed to handle details that couldn't always wait until the next morning.

I understood all of that.

And for a while, it helped me ignore the uneasiness I felt.

I didn't want to be the wife who resented another woman simply because she worked closely with her husband.

I didn't want to embarrass myself by asking suspicious questions.

I didn't want Aaron to think I didn't trust him.

That last thought still makes me uncomfortable.

Because trust had become something I was expected to provide without receiving the honesty that should have supported it.

Aaron could spend more and more time with Jasmine.

He could take her to formal events.

He could stop inviting me to ordinary dinners with colleagues.

And I was supposed to prove that I trusted him by never questioning any of it.

I had accepted that arrangement longer than I should have.

The charity galas were where the change became particularly difficult to ignore.

Those events weren't only about work.

They were public occasions.

Places where people noticed who arrived together.

Places where spouses and colleagues gathered in the same room.

Places where Aaron had once seemed pleased to have me beside him.

Then Jasmine began accompanying him instead.

I tried to tell myself it was convenient.

She handled his schedule.

She knew the business contacts.

Perhaps it was easier for her to attend.

But convenience didn't explain why Aaron had told people I preferred staying home.

That was the detail I couldn't dismiss.

If he had simply said I couldn't attend a particular event, I might have believed him.

If he had explained that Jasmine needed to be there for work, I might have accepted it.

But he had made a statement about my wishes.

He had told people what I supposedly wanted.

And he had been wrong.

I hadn't wanted to disappear.

I hadn't wanted to become an occasional name mentioned when someone asked why I wasn't present.

I hadn't wanted to spend evenings wondering whether my husband was standing beside another woman while explaining that his wife liked being home.

Yet that was what had happened.

The longer it continued, the harder it became to ask questions without sounding as though I was challenging something everyone else already accepted.

Jasmine belonged in that professional world.

I apparently did not.

At least, that was how it began to feel.

And I hated that feeling.

I hated that I could hear her name and immediately wonder what Aaron had been doing.

I hated that I could think about an ordinary company dinner and imagine whether she had accompanied him.

Most of all, I hated that I had started measuring my own marriage against the amount of time another woman spent with my husband.

I had never wanted that life.

I had wanted Aaron.

The man I married.

Not the CEO everyone admired.

Not the executive who could make competitors nervous.

Just the person who had once made me believe we were building something together.

The distance between that man and the husband I was living with had become impossible to ignore.

I couldn't say the change happened overnight.

It hadn't.

Three years was a long time.

Long enough for small disappointments to become ordinary.

Long enough to stop noticing how often you were making excuses.

Long enough to forget what it felt like to be included without having to ask.

Michael had watched some of those changes from inside the company.

I had lived with them at home.

That was why the Slack message had reached so far beyond a private argument.

The people discussing it weren't hearing about a woman they had never encountered.

Jasmine was Aaron's executive assistant.

She had accompanied him to events.

She had become a familiar presence beside him.

The relationship I had exposed involved people who occupied important positions inside the business.

I understood why Michael couldn't simply dismiss the situation.

An executive's personal life could remain private in many circumstances.

But this wasn't a situation where nothing had touched the workplace.

Aaron had brought Jasmine into public professional settings.

He had used those settings to explain away my absence.

And now five hundred employees had access to my message about the affair.

That created questions he couldn't answer merely by insisting that his marriage was nobody else's concern.

Still, I tried to be fair about what I knew.

I knew what Aaron had done to our marriage.

I knew that Jasmine was involved.

I knew the public appearances had become part of the problem.

But I didn't know everything they had said to one another.

I didn't know every moment they spent together.

And I wasn't going to invent those details just to make myself angrier.

There had already been enough pain.

I had spent years imagining things.

Most of those imaginings had left me feeling smaller.

I didn't want to keep doing that.

What mattered was the truth I could no longer avoid.

Aaron was having an affair.

Jasmine was the other woman.

And I had been placed in the humiliating position of watching my husband gradually remove me from the visible parts of his life.

That was enough.

I didn't need another explanation.

I didn't need to count every dinner.

I didn't need to know whether he had said the same things to her that he once said to me.

The marriage had already been damaged.

That was the fact I kept coming back to.

I thought about the fifth night again.

If Aaron had come home and offered another explanation, would I have accepted it?

The question bothered me.

Because there had been four nights before it.

Four opportunities for me to recognize what was happening.

Four times when I had found some way to keep living with the uncertainty.

I wanted to believe I would have stopped accepting excuses eventually.

But I didn't know.

I had become skilled at surviving one disappointment at a time.

I wasn't skilled at admitting that all those disappointments belonged to the same problem.

The Slack message was the first action I had taken that didn't depend on Aaron's permission.

I hadn't asked whether it was convenient.

I hadn't waited until he was ready to discuss our marriage.

I hadn't worried about whether his schedule could accommodate an uncomfortable conversation.

I had acted.

And now I was facing the consequences of that decision.

Part of me felt exposed.

I had said something in public that most people would have kept inside their home.

I knew some employees might judge me for that.

I knew Michael might wish the situation had never reached the company channel.

And I knew Aaron might focus on the embarrassment rather than the reasons behind it.

None of those possibilities surprised me.

But there was another feeling underneath the fear.

I had finally stopped treating the affair as something I should be ashamed to acknowledge.

The shame belonged to the people who had betrayed the marriage.

Not to the person who had been betrayed.

I had understood those words in theory for years.

Living them was different.

Because when someone you love chooses another person, it's difficult not to begin questioning yourself.

You wonder what you missed.

What you lacked.

What you could have changed.

You compare ordinary details.

The way you speak.

The way you dress.

The way you spend your evenings.

And if you aren't careful, you turn another person's dishonesty into a long list of your own supposed failures.

I had done that.

I had been cruel to myself in ways I would never have been cruel to someone else.

I had looked at my marriage and wondered whether I had simply become less interesting.

Perhaps Aaron preferred having Jasmine beside him because she understood the company.

Perhaps he found their conversations easier.

Perhaps he had become tired of the life we shared.

Those were thoughts I had allowed myself to revisit again and again.

But none excused his behavior.

A husband who no longer wanted his marriage had a responsibility to speak honestly about it.

He didn't get to quietly replace his wife in one part of his life while expecting her to continue fulfilling the role at home.

I hadn't been given a choice.

And that was why I was so angry.

I wasn't merely angry that Jasmine existed.

I wasn't angry that she had an important job.

I wasn't even angry that Aaron worked long hours.

I was angry because the relationship between them had become something that violated the promises he made to me.

I was angry because he had allowed me to keep living inside a version of our marriage that wasn't honest.

And I was angry because I had spent so much time trying not to create trouble that I had stopped defending myself.

There was a moment when I realized that the argument I had been having in my head was no longer really about Jasmine.

It was about Aaron.

His choices.

His explanations.

His refusal to treat me as someone who deserved to know what was happening.

For years, I had looked toward the other woman and wondered what she possessed that I didn't.

That morning, I asked myself a different question.

Why was I fighting so hard to keep a man who seemed willing to let me feel this way?

I didn't have an easy answer.

Love was part of it.

History was part of it.

Fear was part of it, too.

I had known Aaron as my husband for so long that imagining a future without him felt unfamiliar.

I didn't know what that future would look like.

I didn't know what decisions I would eventually make.

I only knew that the life we had been living could not continue unchanged.

Something had already broken.

The public message hadn't caused that.

It had revealed it.

I thought about the people in the company who were talking about us.

Some might see Aaron differently.

Some might look at Jasmine differently.

Some might simply wish the whole situation would disappear.

I couldn't control their opinions.

But I could control what I was willing to say about my own experience.

I no longer wanted to call deliberate exclusion a misunderstanding.

I no longer wanted to call repeated absences a demanding schedule.

And I no longer wanted to call an affair something harmless because the woman involved happened to work for my husband.

The words mattered.

For too long, I had softened them.

I had made painful things sound ordinary because ordinary things were easier to survive.

Now I was done doing that.

Aaron could decide how to respond to my message.

Michael could decide what questions the company needed to address.

The employees could form their own opinions.

But I had my own decision to make.

I needed to stop thinking of Jasmine as the woman who had somehow taken everything from me.

She hadn't taken my ability to choose.

She hadn't taken my right to expect honesty.

She hadn't taken my worth.

And she couldn't take something from me that Aaron had already stopped protecting.

That realization was painful.

It was also the first time I had felt something other than jealousy when I thought about her.

I was tired.

Tired of wondering.

Tired of comparing.

Tired of waiting for my husband to behave as though the vows he made still mattered.

I didn't yet know exactly what I would say when I faced Jasmine.

But I knew what I would no longer do.

I would not beg her to leave Aaron.

I would not compete for his attention.

And I would not allow another woman to become the person who decided whether my marriage deserved respect.

That was Aaron's responsibility.

And he had already failed it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Wanted Aaron to Understand the Damage He Caused, but His Company Could
