4 – When Aaron Demanded to See the Message, Michael Turned His Tablet Around and Let My Husband Read What I Had Finally Said

The part I kept thinking about afterward was the tablet.

Not because it was important by itself.

It was an ordinary piece of office equipment.

Something used for meetings, messages, and the daily work of running a company.

But that morning, it carried something Aaron couldn't avoid.

My words.

For eleven years, Michael Reeves had stood beside my husband through the pressures of executive life.

He knew Aaron's strengths.

He knew how difficult it was to unsettle him during a negotiation.

He had seen the way Aaron could remain composed when everyone around him was losing patience.

And he had also seen the changes in Aaron's personal behavior over the previous three years.

The missed invitations.

The appearances with Jasmine.

The excuses made for my absence.

The increasing lack of concern about how any of it looked.

Those things hadn't required an executive meeting before.

Now they were at the center of a conversation involving hundreds of employees.

I wondered whether Aaron understood how much had changed overnight.

At home, he had become accustomed to deciding when he would explain himself.

He could avoid difficult conversations by staying away.

He could offer another reason for a missed evening.

He could tell people I didn't care to attend an event.

And for a long time, I had allowed those explanations to stand.

But a company-wide Slack message wasn't a conversation he could simply postpone until he felt ready.

People had already read it.

They were already discussing it.

And Michael knew that the situation affected the company.

The issue had gone beyond whatever Aaron chose to call a private disagreement.

It now involved trust in the person leading the business.

That was not something Michael could pretend was irrelevant.

I knew Aaron would eventually demand to understand exactly what had been said.

He disliked uncertainty.

Especially when the uncertainty involved him.

He preferred to receive information directly.

He wanted the details in front of him.

That habit had served him well in business.

He didn't like relying on secondhand explanations when a matter was serious.

And this was serious.

The Slack channel had reached an audience of five hundred employees.

Before the first executive meeting, the company's people were discussing their CEO's marriage.

I couldn't imagine Aaron finding that easy to accept.

He had worked too long to establish his position.

He had built a reputation for confidence and control.

He had faced business rivals who wanted to see him fail.

And now the conversation threatening his reputation had begun with his own wife.

Me.

Claire.

The woman he had gradually stopped including in the public parts of his life.

There was something painful about that.

I hadn't wanted to become his opponent.

I had wanted to remain his partner.

I had wanted him to treat me as someone whose feelings mattered.

But I couldn't keep playing the part of a supportive wife while he treated our marriage as something he could set aside whenever it was inconvenient.

I kept thinking about the charity galas.

The way Jasmine had gone with him.

The way people had been told I preferred to remain at home.

That explanation had always bothered me.

It made the distance between us sound mutual.

As though Aaron and I had calmly agreed that I no longer needed to be part of those evenings.

We hadn't.

I hadn't even been given the chance to decide.

And that was why the public nature of my message mattered so much to me.

He had allowed other people to believe something about my marriage that wasn't true.

I wanted them to know I hadn't chosen the arrangement he had created.

Of course, exposing the affair didn't answer every question.

I understood that.

It couldn't explain why Aaron had changed.

It couldn't tell me what he had been thinking during all the evenings he spent with Jasmine.

It couldn't undo the nights when I had waited for him.

And it couldn't tell me what would happen to our marriage.

Those answers still belonged to a future I hadn't reached.

But my silence had ended.

That much was certain.

At the company, Michael had the message available on his tablet.

Aaron wanted to see it.

He didn't ask for a general explanation.

He wanted the words themselves.

"Let me read what she posted."

That was the demand.

Michael turned the tablet so Aaron could see the screen.

It was such a small movement.

A man holding out a device.

Another man looking at it.

Nothing more.

Yet I kept returning to that moment because it was the first time I could picture my words reaching Aaron without his being able to interrupt me.

There was no conversation for him to redirect.

No question he could avoid answering.

No explanation about work that would make the message disappear.

He had to read what I had written.

And the people who had already seen it couldn't be made to unread it.

I thought about how different that was from the conversations we had failed to have at home.

At home, I had grown used to uncertainty.

I could ask where he had been and still finish the conversation without feeling any closer to the truth.

I could wonder why he had stopped inviting me to events and be left thinking I was unreasonable for caring.

I could hear that Jasmine had accompanied him somewhere and then spend hours trying to persuade myself it was simply part of her job.

The pattern always ended with me questioning my own reaction.

Perhaps I was being too sensitive.

Perhaps I didn't understand the pressure he was under.

Perhaps I should be more patient.

Those thoughts had become familiar.

Too familiar.

By the fifth night, I had begun to see how much of our marriage depended on me accepting them.

Aaron continued with his life.

I continued making allowances.

And each allowance left a little less room for my own feelings.

I had not understood how far that had gone until I sat awake and realized I didn't even expect him to come home.

That realization stayed with me.

It had been more frightening than the anger.

More frightening than the thought of Jasmine.

I had stopped expecting my husband to behave like someone who shared a life with me.

I wasn't simply upset about one night.

I was looking at years of small changes that had become impossible to explain away.

Michael had seen some of those changes from the workplace.

I had lived with them at home.

The Slack message had brought the two views together.

That was why it had become a leadership problem.

Aaron's behavior with Jasmine hadn't remained entirely hidden inside our marriage.

His colleagues had seen them together.

He had given explanations for my absence.

And now the company had received a message from me making the affair public.

The situation was no longer confined to our home, whatever Aaron wished to believe.

I didn't know how he would respond after reading the message.

I couldn't hear his thoughts.

I couldn't know whether he felt anger, embarrassment, or something closer to regret.

I wasn't going to pretend I knew what was happening inside him.

For too long, I had made that mistake.

I had guessed at his reasons.

I had filled in his silences.

I had offered explanations he hadn't even bothered to give me.

This time, I wanted to stop guessing.

Whatever Aaron felt, it was his responsibility to face it.

And whatever happened next, I would have to take responsibility for my decision as well.

I had exposed the affair in a public workplace channel.

I had involved people who weren't part of our marriage.

I couldn't pretend there were no consequences to that.

I wasn't proud of the pain surrounding the situation.

But I also couldn't regret telling the truth simply because Aaron might dislike hearing it.

Those were two different things.

The distinction mattered to me.

I thought about Jasmine.

She was no longer just a name attached to Aaron's schedule.

She was part of the reason I had spent the fifth night alone.

She was the woman standing beside him in places where I had once been welcome.

I had spent too much time comparing myself with her.

Wondering what she offered.

Wondering what had changed.

Wondering whether Aaron had decided I was no longer worth including in his life.

I didn't want to keep asking those questions.

The affair was not something I could fix by becoming quieter or more accommodating.

I had already tried to preserve the marriage by avoiding confrontation.

It hadn't brought Aaron home.

It hadn't ended his relationship with Jasmine.

It hadn't returned the honesty I had once expected between us.

And now I had reached a point where my choices had to be about something other than persuading him to treat me properly.

I needed to decide what I would accept.

I needed to stop allowing his behavior to determine whether I felt worthy of being his wife.

That realization didn't make the future simple.

There were still conversations ahead.

Still consequences.

Still the question of what remained of our marriage after so much trust had been lost.

But one thing had changed.

I was no longer hiding the truth to protect Aaron's image.

And as Michael held the tablet in front of him, that truth was exactly what Aaron had to confront.

He read my message again.

I wasn't there to see his face.

I wasn't there to explain myself.

For once, I didn't have to be.

My words were already in front of him.

The people who worked for him had already been discussing them.

And the silence I had maintained for years was finally over.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5:
