3 – Before the First Executive Meeting, My Husband’s Colleagues Were Already Discussing the Marriage He Had Tried to Keep Out of Sight

I hadn't thought much about Michael Reeves before that morning.

He belonged to Aaron's working life.

That was a world I had gradually been pushed out of.

Michael had worked alongside my husband for eleven years.

Eleven years was long enough to see what a person was capable of.

It was also long enough to notice when that person started changing.

Michael knew Aaron as an executive.

He had seen the confidence that other people admired.

He had watched my husband handle negotiations involving enormous amounts of money.

He had been there when difficult business deals were completed and when competing companies tried to outmaneuver them.

Aaron was skilled at that kind of confrontation.

He could sit across from experienced executives and remain calm while everyone else became uncomfortable.

I knew that side of him, too.

It was one of the reasons I had once felt so secure with him.

He seemed able to handle anything.

A difficult decision.

A complicated negotiation.

A room full of people who disagreed with him.

But knowing how to win a business argument didn't mean he knew how to care for his marriage.

I had learned that slowly.

Michael had been watching a different kind of change.

Over the previous three years, Aaron had grown less careful about the way he behaved.

I didn't know everything Michael had thought during that time.

He hadn't been telling me about it.

But the things he could see were the same things I had eventually been forced to recognize.

Aaron no longer included me in casual gatherings with colleagues.

Jasmine had begun appearing beside him at charity events.

My absence was explained as a preference for staying home.

And, as time passed, Aaron seemed less concerned about offering explanations at all.

From the outside, perhaps those changes looked like a marriage becoming distant.

From inside it, they felt like being slowly erased.

There was no single moment when I woke up and discovered that my husband had stopped treating me as his partner.

It happened in small pieces.

One invitation that never came.

One event I heard about afterward.

One evening when he didn't explain where he had been.

Then another.

Eventually, I had become accustomed to waiting for information about my own husband's life.

That was an awful thing to become accustomed to.

Michael wasn't responsible for what Aaron did.

I understood that.

He was a colleague, not a member of our marriage.

He had a professional relationship with Aaron.

Their work involved decisions that affected the company and the people who depended on it.

I couldn't reasonably expect him to manage Aaron's personal choices.

Still, his position meant he had seen parts of the situation that I had been encouraged not to question.

He had watched the changes happen over time.

He had seen how Aaron's behavior became less discreet.

And he had seen Jasmine become increasingly visible beside him.

Michael had never made it his business to advise Aaron about our marriage.

I didn't blame him for that.

Most people don't want to interfere in someone else's home.

They tell themselves the couple will work things out.

They assume there are details they don't know.

Sometimes, they simply don't want to become involved.

I understood those reasons because I had used similar ones to keep myself quiet.

But the morning after my message, Michael couldn't treat what was happening as something separate from the company.

The Slack post had changed that.

By the time the first executive meeting was approaching, employees were already discussing what I had written.

Five hundred people had access to the channel.

The subject wasn't a sales target.

It wasn't a contract.

It wasn't a routine workplace announcement.

It concerned their CEO.

His marriage.

And his relationship with a woman employed as his executive assistant.

Those details made it difficult to dismiss as something that belonged entirely outside the office.

Aaron's private decisions had become part of the conversation at work.

I knew that was a serious consequence.

I didn't know how every employee reacted.

Some might have been surprised.

Others might have been uncomfortable.

Some might have wondered whether the signs had been obvious all along.

I had no way to know.

What mattered was that people were talking about it before the executives had even begun their scheduled business.

That was something Aaron couldn't control simply by refusing to discuss it at home.

His employees were already aware that there was a problem.

And Michael recognized that the problem had become larger than a private disagreement.

I could imagine how strange that morning must have felt for someone who had worked beside Aaron for so long.

For eleven years, Michael had known him as a leader who understood the importance of careful decisions.

He had seen him approach difficult negotiations with patience and confidence.

He had watched him make choices that involved billions of dollars.

And now he was dealing with a situation Aaron had allowed to develop through years of increasingly careless behavior.

There was an uncomfortable contrast in that.

My husband could identify the weaknesses in another company's position.

He could anticipate what business rivals might do.

He could manage complicated negotiations.

But he hadn't been willing to recognize what was happening in his own home.

Or perhaps he had recognized it and believed there would never be consequences.

I couldn't say which possibility was worse.

I only knew what it had cost me.

The evenings spent being excluded.

The excuses I had repeated.

The way I had gradually stopped expecting honest answers.

And the final night when I had decided not to wait anymore.

I had never intended to become a subject of conversation among hundreds of employees.

At least, that wasn't the life I had wanted.

I wanted a marriage where I didn't have to wonder whether my husband was telling me the truth.

I wanted to be included because he wanted me there.

I wanted to stop feeling foolish when I heard that Jasmine had accompanied him somewhere I hadn't been invited.

Those were ordinary things.

They shouldn't have been so difficult.

But by the morning of the Slack message, even those ordinary hopes seemed far away.

I kept thinking about the people who worked for Aaron.

They weren't responsible for his affair.

They had gone to work expecting to do their jobs.

Instead, they found themselves discussing the behavior of the person leading their company.

I knew some of them would rather not be involved.

That was fair.

I hadn't thought through every consequence while sitting alone at 3:17 in the morning.

I had been thinking about the fifth night.

About the absence of my husband.

About the humiliation I could no longer keep to myself.

I had wanted people to understand.

Now they were talking.

And I was beginning to recognize that being heard didn't mean I would feel better immediately.

There was no sudden repair.

No return to the way things had been.

There was only a very public acknowledgment of something that had been damaging our marriage for years.

Michael understood that the discussion created a problem for the company's leadership.

Not because every personal mistake made by an executive belonged in a corporate meeting.

But because this particular situation involved the CEO, his assistant, and the employees who had now been drawn into it.

It was no longer possible for the people closest to Aaron at work to pretend they knew nothing.

And it was becoming impossible for Aaron to continue behaving as though the only person affected was me.

That was the change I had wanted him to face.

I had wanted him to understand that his actions didn't disappear simply because he chose not to discuss them.

I had wanted him to see that I was no longer prepared to protect the appearance of a happy marriage.

And I had wanted him to know I was capable of making my own decisions.

Even painful ones.

Even imperfect ones.

As the executive meeting approached, the conversation about my message continued.

The company still had its ordinary work.

There were contracts to manage.

Meetings to attend.

Employees expecting direction.

But the attention surrounding Aaron had changed.

He was no longer only the man people knew for his business victories.

He was also the husband whose affair had been exposed by his wife.

That wasn't a title he could negotiate away.

At least, not before the people discussing it had already seen the message.

I thought about his confidence.

The expression he wore when he believed he had every situation under control.

The ease with which he had explained why I wasn't beside him anymore.

And I wondered what he would do when someone placed my words directly in front of him.

For years, Aaron had been the person giving explanations.

That morning, he was the person who needed one.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When
