15 – I Had Prepared Myself for Difficult Answers, but I Still Wasn’t Ready to Face How Much We Would Need to Understand Together

By then, I had stopped expecting every hour to bring a change.

I still hoped for one.

I simply no longer treated each quiet moment as a sign that something was going wrong.

The medical team continued caring for Maggie.

I stayed close and listened when they spoke with me.

I answered questions as accurately as I could.

And I tried to remember that the doctors knew more about her immediate condition than I did.

I could be her husband without pretending to be her physician.

That was another thing I had needed to learn.

I had always been the person who wanted to fix what was wrong.

When our son was young, I would look for the practical solution before he had finished explaining the problem.

When Maggie was upset, I sometimes offered advice before I understood what she wanted from me.

I meant well.

That didn't mean I was always helpful.

Sitting beside her in the hospital made me think about those habits.

I couldn't fix this for Maggie.

I couldn't answer questions she might not yet be able to answer herself.

I couldn't make the medical team know something they hadn't discovered.

I could only be present and be honest.

I was beginning to understand that this was not the same as doing nothing.

I sat with her for a long time that morning.

At one point, I took my phone out and looked at our son's number.

I hadn't called him for several hours.

I considered trying again.

Then I decided I would make one call later, when I had a clear reason to speak with him.

I wanted to know whether he had information about Maggie's condition before she became unwell.

I wanted to know whether he had seen her take any medication.

I wanted to know whether he had noticed anything that might help the doctors understand what had happened.

Those were questions worth asking.

I didn't need to ask them in anger.

I didn't need to assume the answers.

I only needed to ask.

I put the phone away.

Then I looked at Maggie.

I had imagined our first conversation after she became able to speak in several different ways.

In one version, she would wake and immediately remember everything.

In another, she would be confused and need me to explain where she was.

In another, she would remember only fragments.

I couldn't know which version would be closest to the truth.

I decided to stop rehearsing.

Whatever happened, I would respond to the person in front of me.

That was the only plan that made sense.

I leaned forward.

“Maggie, I'm here.”

I paused.

“Take your time.”

The words were simple, but I meant them.

I didn't want her to feel that she had to tell me everything just because I had spent days waiting.

I didn't want her to believe that my worry was another burden she needed to carry.

I wanted her to recover first.

Then, when she was able, we could talk.

I thought about the morning she left home.

I had watched her pack the charger into the outside pocket of her bag.

I remembered that detail because it was so ordinary.

She had always put things where she could find them easily.

I had teased her about being too organized.

She had told me that if I were better at putting things away, she wouldn't need to be so organized.

I had laughed.

I wished I could hear her say it again.

I wished I could go back to that kitchen and have the same conversation.

But I couldn't.

I had to live with the days that had followed.

That meant accepting the uncertainty without letting it turn into a judgment about Maggie or our son.

I had no evidence that Maggie had deliberately hidden something from me.

I had no evidence that our son had caused her condition.

I had the medical information the doctor had explained, the unanswered calls, and the fact that Maggie had become too unwell to communicate normally.

Those facts were serious enough.

I didn't need to add anything to them.

I took out my list of questions one last time.

The paper had become creased from being folded and unfolded.

I smoothed it on my knee.

I read each line slowly.

Then I turned it over and wrote one sentence on the back.

Listen first.

I looked at the words for a moment.

They seemed almost too simple to matter.

But I knew how easily I could forget them when I was frightened.

I folded the paper and put it away.

The phone remained quiet.

I didn't pick it up.

I sat beside Maggie and let the room settle around me.

I thought about the life waiting for us at home.

The coffee cup beside the sink.

The chair near the window.

The loose cabinet hinge I had repaired while she was away.

Those things were still there.

I hoped we would return to them.

I hoped we would have the chance to complain about ordinary things again.

But I also knew that if Maggie recovered, we would have to talk about what had happened.

We would have to consider the medication found in her blood.

We would have to understand what she remembered and what she didn't.

We would have to ask questions that might not have easy answers.

I wasn't looking forward to those conversations.

I wasn't going to avoid them either.

I had learned that silence could leave too much room for fear.

I didn't want to spend the rest of our lives guessing at things we could discuss honestly.

If Maggie needed time, I would give her time.

If she needed help, I would help her.

If she had questions of her own, I would listen.

And if we discovered that there were parts of the story neither of us understood, we would face that uncertainty together.

I reached for her hand.

For a while, I said nothing.

I didn't need to prepare another speech.

I didn't need to make another call.

I needed to stay.

So I did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Finally
