14 – When I Finally Stopped Trying to Control Every Unanswered Question, I Saw How Much of My Fear Came From Not Knowing What Maggie Had Endured

I had always believed that a person could prepare for trouble by thinking carefully.

If something went wrong, I made a list.

If I needed to make a decision, I gathered the facts.

If I didn't understand something, I asked questions until I had a clear answer.

That approach had served me well enough over the years.

It was useless in the hospital room.

I could write down every question I had about Maggie.

I could call our son until the battery on my phone ran out.

I could ask the doctor to explain the test results a dozen different ways.

None of those things could tell me what Maggie remembered.

None could tell me how she had come into contact with the sedative.

And none could guarantee that the next hour would bring the answer I wanted.

I had to live with that.

It was harder than I expected.

I spent part of the morning looking through the messages on my phone again.

I wasn't searching for anything new.

I knew that.

Still, I opened the conversation with Maggie and read the last exchange.

She had told me she had arrived safely.

She had said our son had a lot going on.

I had told her to take her time.

I stared at my own words.

At the time, they had been kind.

I had wanted her to feel free to help our son without worrying about me.

Now those same words reminded me how little I had understood about what might happen next.

I put the phone down.

There was no reason to blame myself for not predicting an event I couldn't have known about.

But I could learn something from the experience.

I could stop assuming that a person was fine simply because they had sounded fine the last time we spoke.

I could ask a second question when something felt wrong.

I could take silence seriously without immediately deciding what it meant.

Those were lessons I wished I had never needed.

I moved my chair closer to Maggie's bed.

The cup of coffee on the table had gone cold again.

I picked it up, took one sip, and made a face.

Maggie would have laughed at me for drinking it.

She had always said that if coffee got cold, I should make another cup instead of pretending the old one was still worth drinking.

I poured it into the sink in the small room and returned with an empty cup.

It was such a simple thing to do.

For a moment, I imagined telling her about it when she woke.

I could already hear her response.

“You could have just left it there.”

I smiled.

Then I sat down.

The memory was comforting because it belonged to a part of our life that hadn't changed.

Maggie had been herself before the trip.

She was still the woman I knew, even though I couldn't reach her in the way I wanted to.

I didn't need to invent a different version of her to explain what had happened.

I needed to remember who she was and wait for her to tell me what she could.

A nurse entered and checked on her.

I stepped aside.

When the nurse finished, I asked whether there was anything I needed to know.

She explained that the team would continue monitoring Maggie and that they would keep me informed about changes.

I thanked her.

I had become careful about the questions I asked.

I no longer asked the same thing repeatedly just because I was anxious.

If I didn't understand an answer, I asked for clarification.

If the answer was that they didn't know yet, I tried to accept it.

I didn't always succeed.

But I was trying.

After the nurse left, I took out the paper with my questions.

I read the first one.

How was Maggie doing?

I already knew the answer was that she needed continued care and observation.

I read the second.

What did the medication explain?

I knew the doctor had told me it could account for confusion, weakness, and prolonged unconsciousness.

I read the third.

How had it gotten into her system?

That was still unanswered.

I folded the paper again.

The last question was the one I wanted to ask most.

It was also the one I could do the least about at that moment.

I put the paper back into my pocket.

Then I thought about our son.

I had spent years trying to be a good father.

I had wanted him to grow into a man who could handle his own problems.

I had wanted him to know that he could ask for help without feeling ashamed.

Maggie had always been better at making that clear.

She could listen without making a person feel small.

I sometimes moved too quickly toward advice.

I thought a solution was the most useful thing I could offer.

Maybe that was why Maggie had often taken the lead when our son needed someone to talk to.

She knew how to give him room.

I respected that about her.

But now she had gone to Knoxville to help him, and I didn't know what had happened afterward.

I couldn't fill the gap with assumptions about our son.

I couldn't decide he had done something wrong simply because he hadn't answered my calls.

I also couldn't pretend that his silence didn't concern me.

Both things could be true.

I was worried about him.

I was worried about Maggie.

I needed to know what he knew.

But I would have to find out through actual information, not by turning my fear into a verdict.

I sat quietly for a while.

Then I leaned toward Maggie.

“I know you went to help him.”

I paused.

“I just wish I knew what happened after you got there.”

I didn't expect an answer.

I didn't ask another question.

I stayed beside her.

There was something important about saying those words aloud.

They reminded me that I was not only afraid of losing my wife.

I was afraid of losing my understanding of the life we had built.

I had believed I knew what was happening in our family.

Now I understood that there could be important details I hadn't seen.

That didn't mean everything I believed had been false.

It meant I had more to learn.

I looked at the clock.

Another stretch of time had passed.

I checked my phone once, then put it away.

I wasn't going to spend the rest of the day watching the screen.

If our son called, I would answer.

If the hospital staff needed me, I would listen.

If Maggie became able to speak, I would be there.

Until then, I would do what I could and stop pretending that worry was the same as action.

I reached for her hand.

I didn't need to say anything else.

For the moment, being beside her was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: I Had Prepared Myself for Difficult Answers, but I Still Wasn’t Ready to
