13 – I Had Come to Knoxville Searching for an Explanation, but I Was Beginning to Understand That Maggie’s Recovery Had to Come Before My Need for Answers

I had started measuring time by the small things.

The number of times a nurse came into the room.

The cups of coffee I bought and forgot to drink.

The moments when I looked at my phone and had to remind myself that I couldn't make it ring.

I had never been a patient man.

Maggie used to say I could turn waiting for a restaurant table into a personal argument with the universe.

She wasn't wrong.

But sitting beside her in that hospital room had taught me that there were some things I couldn't hurry.

I couldn't hurry her recovery.

I couldn't hurry the doctors toward an answer they didn't have.

And I couldn't force our son to tell me anything by calling him again and again.

I was learning that the hard way.

That morning, I arrived at Maggie's bedside after stepping out briefly to wash my face.

I had slept badly again.

My shirt was wrinkled, and I had forgotten to shave.

I caught my reflection in the darkened window and barely recognized the man looking back at me.

I looked older than I had a few days earlier.

Maybe I was.

I sat down and reached for Maggie's hand.

“Morning, sweetheart.”

I waited a moment.

“It's me.”

The words had become familiar.

I said them without expecting an answer.

A nurse came in and checked on Maggie.

I stood aside and watched, trying not to interfere.

When she finished, I asked whether there had been any change.

She explained that Maggie was still being monitored and that the staff would keep me informed about her condition.

I thanked her.

I was beginning to understand how much patience it took to care for someone when the answers didn't arrive all at once.

After she left, I looked at the paper on the table.

My list of questions had become soft around the folds.

I had carried it around so often that the edges were beginning to curl.

I picked it up and read it again.

The questions were still the same.

I hadn't learned how the medication had entered Maggie's system.

I hadn't learned whether she remembered the days before she became unwell.

And I still hadn't heard from our son.

I folded the paper and put it in my pocket.

I didn't need to read it again.

I knew what I wanted to ask.

I also knew I couldn't ask Maggie until she was able to answer.

I thought about calling our son one more time.

My phone was right beside me.

I picked it up, looked at his number, and hesitated.

I wanted to hear him say that he was all right.

I wanted him to explain what he knew.

I wanted to ask why he hadn't answered my calls.

But I had already tried several times.

Another unanswered call wouldn't tell me anything new.

I set the phone down.

That was a small decision.

It felt bigger than it should have.

For days, I had treated each unanswered call as a problem I could solve by trying again.

Now I was beginning to see that I needed to direct my attention toward the things that could actually help Maggie.

I asked the nurse whether the doctor might be available to speak with me later.

She said she would pass along the request.

I thanked her again.

Then I sat beside my wife.

I thought about the morning she left home.

She had packed her bag, checked that she had her charger, and kissed me goodbye.

I had watched her walk to the car.

I had offered to drive her.

She had declined.

Nothing about the exchange had seemed unusual.

I had replayed that morning so many times that I could almost see every movement.

The bag on the passenger seat.

Her hand on the car door.

The brief smile before she drove away.

I wanted to find something in those memories that explained what had happened.

I wanted there to be a clue I had overlooked.

But there wasn't one.

At least, not one I could identify.

The morning had been ordinary.

I had to accept that an ordinary beginning did not guarantee an ordinary ending.

I looked at Maggie.

There were things I wanted to tell her when she could listen.

I wanted to tell her that I was sorry I had let my worry turn into irritation.

I wanted to tell her that I should never have assumed she was simply too busy to answer.

But I also knew that I couldn't judge myself for failing to understand something I hadn't known.

I could regret the way I had thought about her silence without deciding that I had caused it.

That distinction mattered.

I had been so busy looking for the moment when I should have done something differently that I had forgotten what I was actually trying to do.

I was trying to be there for my wife.

I was trying to help her.

I was trying to make sure she knew she wasn't alone.

I leaned closer to the bed.

“You don't have to explain anything to me yet.”

I paused.

“Just get better.”

I sat back.

For a while, I watched the light move across the wall.

The hospital room had become familiar, but I still wished I had never needed to know it.

I wished Maggie were home.

I wished I were sitting in our kitchen, listening to her complain that I had left the coffee grounds in the wrong place.

I wished I could ask her what she wanted for dinner.

Ordinary things.

I had never realized how much I depended on them.

A little later, the doctor came in to speak with me.

I stood and listened as she explained that Maggie needed continued observation.

I asked whether the medication could have affected her ability to communicate.

The doctor explained again that sedatives could cause confusion and prolonged unconsciousness, though the exact effects depended on the circumstances.

She couldn't tell me precisely what Maggie had experienced during those four days.

I nodded.

I didn't ask her to make a guess.

Instead, I asked what I should do if Maggie became able to speak about what happened.

The doctor advised me to give her time and let the medical team know about anything relevant to her condition.

I thanked her.

That was something I could do.

I could listen without pressing.

I could tell the staff what Maggie said if it mattered to her care.

I could stop treating every unknown as something I had to solve immediately.

When the doctor left, I took the paper from my pocket one final time.

I looked at the questions.

Then I put it away.

I didn't throw it out.

I wasn't finished asking them.

I was simply finished trying to answer them without Maggie.

I took her hand again.

The room remained quiet.

I stayed where I was.

For the first time since arriving in Knoxville, I felt that I knew what my next step was.

Wait for Maggie to be ready.

Listen when she could speak.

And let the truth come from what we actually knew, not from what I was afraid might be true.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: When I Finally Stopped Trying to
