11 – I Had Always Thought Our Family Could Survive Any Difficult Conversation, Until Silence Made Me Question What We Had Never Learned to Say

I began thinking about our son more often as the day went on.

Not because I had decided he was responsible for anything.

I hadn't.

I thought about him because Maggie had gone to Knoxville for him, and I needed to understand what she had been doing there.

I remembered the way she had spoken about him over the years.

She had always been protective.

Even when he made mistakes, she tried to see what had led him to them.

Sometimes I thought she gave him too much room.

Sometimes I thought I was too quick to expect him to solve his problems alone.

We had disagreed about that before.

But we had never disagreed about loving him.

He was our son.

Whatever his age, whatever his difficulties, Maggie wanted him to be all right.

I understood that.

I had gone along with her decision to help him because I trusted her judgment.

I still trusted her.

What I didn't understand was what had happened after she arrived.

I looked at my phone.

I had called him several times.

I had left a message asking him to contact me.

He had not answered.

I wondered whether he knew I was in Knoxville.

I wondered whether he knew Maggie was receiving medical care.

I wondered whether he was trying to reach someone else.

I could think of many possibilities.

None of them was an answer.

I decided I would call again later, but I wouldn't spend every minute waiting for him.

Maggie needed me to pay attention to the situation in front of me.

I put the phone away.

For a while, I sat without doing anything.

I had reached a point where even the smallest decision felt tiring.

Should I get more coffee?

Should I ask another question?

Should I call our son again?

I had to remind myself that I didn't need to make every decision immediately.

Some things could wait.

Maggie's care could not be replaced by my worry, and my worry would not make the medical team work any faster.

I needed to remain available and let them do their jobs.

I thought about the doctor telling me that the medication results did not reveal how Maggie had been exposed.

That was the central question.

It was the question I kept returning to, no matter how often I tried to think about something else.

I knew there might be a straightforward explanation.

I knew there might be details Maggie herself had not yet been able to share.

I also knew that I could not rule out possibilities simply because they frightened me.

The only responsible thing I could do was wait for more information.

That didn't mean I had to stop asking questions.

It meant I needed to ask them in the right order.

First, I needed to understand Maggie's condition.

Then I needed to hear what she remembered.

After that, I could decide what questions remained unanswered.

I repeated the order to myself until it felt less like a plan and more like something I could actually follow.

A nurse came into the room and checked on Maggie.

I stood to give her space.

When she finished, I asked whether I could speak with the doctor again if I thought of more questions.

She told me that I could.

I thanked her and sat back down.

The kindness of the hospital staff had begun to affect me in ways I hadn't expected.

They didn't know Maggie as I did.

They didn't know the sound of her laugh or the way she folded a towel.

They didn't know how she always checked whether I had locked the door.

But they were caring for her with attention and patience.

I was grateful for that.

I was also reminded that love wasn't the only thing that mattered when someone was in trouble.

Sometimes care meant having the right knowledge and knowing what to do with it.

I couldn't provide all of that myself.

I could provide what I knew about Maggie.

I could make sure the doctors understood her usual habits.

I could tell them honestly what I did and did not know.

And I could stay close enough to hear what came next.

I looked at her again.

I wondered whether she would be upset when she learned how worried I had been.

Maggie sometimes disliked being treated as if she couldn't manage her own affairs.

She valued her independence.

I had always respected that, even when I wanted to protect her.

I didn't want her to wake up and feel that I had already decided she was helpless.

She wasn't helpless.

She was ill, and she needed care.

There was a difference.

I wanted to remember that difference when she was able to talk to me.

I wanted to ask questions without making her feel as if she were on trial.

I wanted to give her time to remember what she could.

And if there were things she didn't understand herself, I wanted to face those uncertainties with her rather than demand answers she couldn't provide.

I had no idea whether the conversation would be easy.

I suspected it wouldn't be.

There might be details that frightened me.

There might be things she had chosen not to share before the trip.

There might be nothing more than a confusing sequence of events that neither of us could fully explain.

I couldn't prepare for every possibility.

I could prepare to listen.

That was something I should have learned long before this happened.

I had often listened to Maggie while thinking about what I would say next.

I had listened to our son while deciding whether his explanation made sense.

I had listened to people at work while planning how to solve the problem they were describing.

I thought I was being attentive.

Sometimes I was only waiting for my turn to speak.

I felt ashamed of that.

Not because I believed I had caused Maggie's condition, but because I had taken too many ordinary conversations for granted.

I had assumed that the important things would always make themselves known.

Now I understood that people didn't always know how to explain what they were experiencing.

Sometimes they needed someone to ask a better question.

Sometimes they needed someone to wait.

And sometimes they needed someone to recognize that silence was not an answer at all.

I leaned back in the chair.

The phone remained on the table.

I didn't reach for it.

I was still worried about our son.

I was still frightened about Maggie.

But I was no longer trying to settle every question before I had the facts.

I would wait for Maggie to tell me what she could.

Then I would decide what needed to happen next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Questions I Had Carried Into the Hospital Were
