10 – The Longer I Sat Beside Her, the More I Realized That Love Could Not Tell Me What Happened, Only Why I Needed to Know

By the next stretch of the day, I had grown tired of hearing my own thoughts.

They went around in circles.

I wondered about the medication.

I worried about Maggie's condition.

I thought about our son and the calls he hadn't answered.

Then I reminded myself that I didn't know enough to draw conclusions.

The cycle started again a few minutes later.

I tried reading something on my phone.

I couldn't keep my attention on the words.

I put it away.

The room seemed too small for all the questions I was carrying.

I stood and walked to the window.

Outside, people continued with their day.

Cars passed.

Someone crossed the street carrying a bag.

A man stood near the entrance, looking down at his phone.

Nobody outside that room knew how much my life had changed.

I found that strange.

The world had continued while I sat beside my wife, waiting for her to wake and explain what she could.

I returned to the chair.

A nurse came in and spoke to me about Maggie's care.

I listened carefully and asked whether there was anything I needed to provide.

She explained that information about Maggie's medications and recent health could help the medical team.

I told her again that I knew of no strong sedative prescription.

I tried to be clear about the limits of what I knew.

I couldn't say Maggie had never taken anything without my knowledge.

I could only say she had never told me about such medication and that taking medicine was not a regular habit of hers.

The nurse thanked me.

After she left, I felt unsettled by how little I could offer.

I had been married to Maggie for years.

I should have been able to answer questions about her health.

But a marriage wasn't a medical record.

There were things she might have done without telling me.

There were things I might have forgotten.

I couldn't pretend otherwise just because I was frightened.

I thought about asking whether I could see the results for myself.

Then I stopped.

I wasn't a doctor.

I needed the medical team to explain what the results meant, not hand me a piece of paper I would struggle to understand.

I had to trust them to do their work while I did mine.

My work was simpler.

Stay.

Listen.

Tell the truth about what I knew.

I sat beside Maggie and watched her breathe.

I had never thought much about breathing before.

It was one of those things you assumed would continue without needing your attention.

Now I found myself noticing every small movement.

I wanted her to wake up and tell me that she was tired of being in the hospital.

I wanted her to ask why I looked so worried.

I wanted her to tell me I needed a shave.

I would have welcomed any complaint.

I would have welcomed an argument.

Anything that sounded like Maggie.

Instead, I sat quietly.

At one point, I took my phone out and opened our messages.

I read the short exchange from when she first reached Knoxville.

She had told me she arrived safely.

She had said our son had a lot going on.

I had answered that she should take her time.

The words looked ordinary.

I had written them without hesitation.

I had meant them kindly.

Now I wished I had asked what was going on.

I wished I had asked whether she wanted me to come.

I wished I had made it easier for her to tell me if something was wrong.

Then I stopped myself.

There was no evidence that she had been trying to tell me something and I had failed to understand.

I was turning a normal conversation into a mistake because I wanted to find a point where I could have changed the outcome.

That was not the same as learning from it.

I put the phone away.

I couldn't change the morning she left.

I couldn't change the messages I had sent.

I could change what I did now.

I could stop making assumptions.

I could stop blaming Maggie for not answering when I didn't know whether she was able to.

And I could stop treating our son's silence as proof of a conclusion I had not earned.

Those were small things.

They were also the only things I could control.

The doctor came by later to discuss Maggie's progress.

I listened as she explained what the team was observing and why continued monitoring was important.

I asked whether the medication could have caused confusion severe enough to interfere with ordinary decisions.

The doctor explained that sedatives could affect a person's awareness and judgment, depending on the substance and the amount involved.

She was careful not to claim that this alone explained every part of Maggie's situation.

I thanked her.

The answer gave me another way to understand the silence.

It also reminded me how much remained unknown.

I sat down after she left.

I thought about all the times I had called Maggie and felt annoyed when she didn't answer immediately.

Sometimes she would call back while I was busy and ask whether something was wrong.

I would tell her no.

Usually, nothing was wrong.

I had never understood how frightening an unanswered call could become when there was no way to know what lay behind it.

Now I did.

I looked at the phone in my hand.

I had wanted it to ring for days.

I still wanted that.

But I no longer wanted to hear a convenient explanation just so I could return to my old routine.

I wanted to know what had happened.

I wanted Maggie to be safe.

And I wanted our family to face the truth, whatever it turned out to be.

I placed the phone on the table.

Then I took Maggie's hand again.

“I love you,” I said.

It was something I had told her many times.

This time, I said it without expecting anything in return.

I didn't ask her to wake.

I didn't ask her to explain.

I simply sat there, letting the words stand on their own.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11:
