I'll be fine.”

I stood in the doorway while she adjusted the bag on the passenger seat.

Then she leaned over and kissed me goodbye.

Nothing about that morning seemed important.

That was the part I would remember later.

Nothing special.

No argument.

No warning.

Just my wife leaving to help our son.

I returned inside and found her coffee cup beside the sink.

She had forgotten to rinse it.

I rinsed it myself, set it upside down on the drying rack, and went about my day.

I expected her to call when she arrived.

She did.

Her voice sounded normal, a little tired from the drive.

“I made it.”

“Good. How's everything?”

“Fine so far. He's got a lot going on.”

I asked whether she had eaten.

She laughed softly.

“You always ask me that.”

“Because you always forget.”

“I'll eat something.”

We talked for a few more minutes.

She told me she would settle in, see what our son needed, and call again later.

I told her to take her time.

I didn't want her worrying about me while she was trying to help him.

That was what I said.

The truth was that I liked having her around, even when we weren't doing anything together.

I liked hearing her move through the house.

I liked the little sounds she made when she searched for something in a drawer.

I liked knowing that if I turned toward the kitchen, she might be standing there with a cup of coffee in her hand.

I never told her how much those ordinary things mattered.

I assumed there would always be another day to tell her.

That first evening, I made dinner for one.

I left enough for Maggie in the refrigerator out of habit, even though I knew she was several hours away.

Afterward, I sat in my chair and watched television.

My phone lay on the armrest.

I checked it more than once.

Nothing.

I wasn't worried.

She had a son to help.

I knew that.

The next morning, I sent her a message asking how she had slept.

She replied later that she was tired but all right.

I asked whether our son was doing better.

She said they were working through things.

That was all.

I could have asked more questions.

I could have asked what kind of help he needed or how long she thought she would stay.

Instead, I told her to get some rest.

She sent back a heart.

I took that as a good sign.

Looking back, I can see how easily I accepted the smallest reassurance when I wanted to believe everything was fine.

I wasn't trying to ignore anything.

I simply had no reason to think there was something to notice.

Maggie had gone to Knoxville before.

Our son was grown, but being grown didn't mean he stopped needing his mother.

There had been times when work, money, or other personal problems made him call her for advice.

She never complained about those calls.

She would listen, ask a few questions, and tell him what she thought.

Sometimes she would call me afterward and explain what was happening.

Other times, she kept the details between herself and our son.

I had never considered that unusual.

A mother and her son were allowed to have conversations that didn't include her husband.

I respected that.

At least, I thought I did.

On the second day, I tried calling her around lunchtime.

It rang for a while before the call ended.

I figured she was busy.

A few minutes later, I sent a message.

No answer came.

I went back to what I was doing.

There were things around the house that needed attention, so I spent the afternoon fixing a loose cabinet hinge and sorting through a stack of mail.

I found an old bill beneath a grocery advertisement and paid it online.

I watered the plants near the kitchen window.

I even washed the towels Maggie had left in the bathroom hamper.

None of those things mattered.

I did them because they gave me something to do while the house felt different without her.

That evening, I called again.

This time, it rang until voicemail answered.

I listened to the recorded greeting.

Maggie's voice sounded cheerful and familiar.

She had recorded it years earlier, back when she thought a proper voicemail greeting ought to include her full name.

I almost smiled.

Then I left a message.

“Hey, it's me. Just checking on you. Call when you get a chance.”

I hung up and put the phone down.

I told myself I was being foolish.

People missed calls.

Phones ran out of battery.

Conversations lasted longer than expected.

There were a hundred ordinary explanations.

I chose the easiest one.

She was helping our son.

The third morning came with rain.

I stood at the kitchen window, watching water collect along the edge of the driveway.

Maggie usually complained when it rained while she was away because she worried about the plants outside our house.

I nearly sent her a picture of the garden.

Then I stopped.

I didn't want to bother her.

That sounds ridiculous now.

I was her husband.

I should have been able to send my wife a picture of our garden without wondering whether I was bothering her.

Still, I put the phone back on the counter.

By noon, I had called twice.

Neither call was answered.

I sent another message.

“Everything okay over there?”

The message went through.

There was no reply.

I started walking from room to room, looking for things I could do.

I straightened a stack of magazines.

I opened the refrigerator, stared inside, and closed it again.

I made coffee even though I had already had two cups.

I drank half of it and forgot the rest.

At some point, I realized I had been holding my phone in my hand for nearly twenty minutes.

That was when the uneasiness began.

Not fear.

Not yet.

Just the uncomfortable feeling that something about the situation wasn't right.

I sat down and thought about calling our son.

I didn't.

I knew he was the reason Maggie had gone to Knoxville in the first place.

If she was busy helping him, I didn't want to interrupt them both.

I told myself that if I hadn't heard from her by the next morning, I would call him.

That seemed reasonable.

It was also another way of postponing a conversation I didn't want to have.

I wanted Maggie to call me herself.

I wanted to hear her say she was fine.

I wanted the small embarrassment of discovering that I had worried for nothing.

That night, I slept badly.

Every time I woke, I checked my phone.

There was nothing from her.

By morning, I was no longer able to pretend the silence didn't bother me.

Four days.

That was how long Maggie had been away.

Four days since I had watched her drive out of our driveway.

Four days since I had heard her voice.

I called again.

Voicemail.

I called a second time.

The same result.

I tried to remember whether she had said anything during our last conversation that might explain why she wasn't answering.

She had sounded tired.

She had said our son had a lot going on.

But she hadn't sounded frightened.

She hadn't asked me to come.

She hadn't said she needed anything.

I sat at the kitchen table and stared at the phone.

I knew I had two choices.

I could continue waiting and hope she called.

Or I could contact our son and ask what was happening.

I picked up the phone before I could talk myself out of it.

I called him.

The phone rang.

I waited, listening to each ring.

When nobody answered, I lowered it and looked at the screen.

For the first time since Maggie left, I stopped making excuses.

Something was wrong.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Questions I Had Avoided Finally Became Impossible to Ignore When My Wife’s Silence Left Me With No One to Trust but My Own Instincts

I had spent most of my life believing that when something went wrong in a family, somebody would eventually tell you.
