That doesn't make them criminal."

Daniel did not disagree.

"That's why they need to be examined properly."

I looked at Ethan.

He had once told me almost the same thing.

The records were complicated.

I didn't understand the arrangements.

I should trust him.

Now the same explanation sounded different when spoken in front of people who were trained to evaluate it.

Margaret placed her fork beside her plate.

"This is completely unnecessary."

Rebecca looked toward her.

"Mrs. Blackwood, we are addressing specific financial concerns."

"My son has spent years building this company."

"I understand."

"Then you must understand how damaging these accusations could be."

Rebecca remained composed.

"The company's standing doesn't answer the questions in these records."

Margaret looked offended.

I recognized the expression.

She wore it whenever someone failed to respond to the Blackwood name with the respect she expected.

For years, that expression had been enough to make me apologize.

Rebecca did not apologize.

She turned back to Ethan.

I watched him straighten his shoulders.

He was preparing to become the businessman again.

The man who knew how to control a room.

He looked toward me.

"Emma, I can't believe you've allowed this."

I didn't answer immediately.

He continued.

"These are private company matters."

I looked at the folder.

They were the same matters I had asked him about repeatedly.

The same questions that had led to arguments.

The same records he had told me to stop examining.

"Then the company should provide the documents that explain them."

His jaw tightened.

"You're my wife."

I felt the words settle heavily between us.

My wife.

He used them like an instruction.

Not a relationship.

Not a promise.

A reason I should obey him.

I looked directly at him.

"Being married to you didn't mean I had to ignore discrepancies."

His expression darkened.

"You've been collecting information about me."

"I preserved records I was permitted to review."

"You went behind my back."

"I asked you to explain them first."

He looked away.

I remembered that first $48,500 payment.

I remembered the vague invoice from Ashford Advisory.

I remembered the revised document that appeared after I asked questions.

I had wanted such an ordinary explanation.

A signed agreement.

A description of work completed.

A record showing why the company had paid the money.

Instead, I had spent months trying to understand why the supporting information kept changing.

Rebecca selected the first document.

She placed it in front of Ethan.

"This concerns a transfer to Ashford Advisory."

He glanced at it.

"That's a legitimate business."

Rebecca waited.

He added that the company had performed consulting work.

"What records support the work performed?" she asked.

"Our finance department has them."

"Those records can be provided through the appropriate process."

He leaned back.

"Of course."

His tone suggested the matter was simple.

But I noticed that he did not identify the work.

He did not describe the project.

He did not explain why the first invoice had contained so little information.

Rebecca moved to another page.

"This concerns additional payments to Redwood Strategic Consulting."

Ethan shifted in his chair.

Another legitimate vendor, he said.

I looked down at the amount.

I recognized the transaction history.

I had reviewed it several times.

The invoices described services that sounded remarkably similar to those attributed to Ashford Advisory.

I had never claimed that similarity proved fraud.

But I had never been able to establish why the two companies were billing for overlapping work.

Rebecca pointed out the inconsistencies.

Ethan said there had been different assignments.

She asked whether the supporting documentation identified those assignments.

He looked toward Daniel.

"I'll have my attorneys handle it."

Daniel nodded.

"That's appropriate."

The answer seemed to surprise Ethan.

Perhaps he had expected an argument.

Instead, Daniel treated the matter as a question requiring records.

I understood why that was important.

An investigation could not be based on whether Ethan seemed trustworthy.

It had to be based on what could be verified.

Rebecca turned to the next document.

This one concerned Northstar Management Group.

She did not immediately explain why she had selected it.

She asked Ethan to identify the business arrangement.

He examined the page.

Then he gave another broad answer about management services.

I had heard those words before.

Strategic advice.

Management services.

Investment coordination.

Business restructuring.

They sounded impressive.

But they did not always explain what somebody had actually been paid to do.

I looked at Ethan's hands.

He had placed them flat on the table.

His wedding ring caught the light.

I remembered our wedding beneath the oak tree.

He had taken my hand and promised to respect me.

Now he was using the same hands to keep himself steady while he answered questions about records he had refused to discuss with me.

Margaret was becoming impatient.

"This seems like a collection of ordinary invoices."

Rebecca looked at her.

"Some may have reasonable explanations."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because other information requires further review."

Margaret opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Rebecca moved to the authorization records.

I knew what was coming.

My stomach tightened.

I had spent weeks examining different versions of documents bearing my name.

Some were papers Ethan had asked me to sign.

Others contained information I did not recognize.

I had discussed the matter with independent counsel.

I had been careful not to accuse anyone of forging a signature without sufficient evidence.

But one record stood out.

The date was wrong in a way that could not easily be explained.

Rebecca placed the document on the table.

"We also need clarification concerning certain authorizations."

Ethan's gaze moved immediately toward me.

I recognized the anger in his expression.

"You had no right to review private executive files."

I felt myself become tense.

The deputy was standing nearby.

Rachel was close enough to help if I needed to leave.

I reminded myself of those things.

"I was asked to examine company records," I said.

He shook his head.

"You were supposed to support me."

"I was doing the work you asked me to do."

"You were supposed to be loyal."

I looked at him.

"I trusted you when you gave me papers to sign."

His eyes narrowed.

"You understood those documents."

"Not every document bearing my name was one I signed."

The room went quiet.

Margaret looked between us.

"What are you talking about?"

Rebecca turned the paper so that I could see it clearly.

It was an authorization form.

The date appeared near the top.

My name was printed beneath the signature line.

Emma Blackwood.

I looked at it.

Even after studying the copy before, seeing it on the breakfast table made me feel strange.

There was something cruel about where it had appeared.

The same table where Ethan had praised me for being an obedient wife.

The same table where Margaret had ignored my injured face.

Now my name was being examined as part of a financial investigation.

Rebecca asked me to identify the problem.

I looked toward Margaret.

"The date is five weeks before my wedding."

She frowned.

"What does that matter?"

I pointed to the name.

"I wasn't Emma Blackwood then."

Margaret leaned forward.

I watched her read the page.

She looked at the date.

Then at the signature.

Then back at the date.

Her expression changed.

I had never seen her look so uncertain.

"That can't be correct," she said.

I remained still.

"It is the date on the document."

Margaret turned toward Ethan.

"Why does this have her married name before the wedding?"

Ethan reached for his water glass.

He did not drink.

"There could have been an administrative mistake."

Rebecca made a note.

"That possibility can be examined."

I looked at Ethan.

He had spent months telling me that company matters were beyond my understanding.

Now he was struggling to explain a date.

It wasn't a complicated calculation.

It didn't require an advanced accounting degree.

The authorization existed before I had legally taken the name printed at the bottom.

And I knew I had not signed it.

Margaret held out her hand.

"I want to see it."

Ethan started to reach for the document.

"I'll deal with this."

She pulled it toward herself.

"No, Ethan."

Her voice was different.

I had heard her criticize staff members.

I had heard her correct me at family dinners.

I had heard her speak sternly to people who arrived late for appointments.

But I had rarely heard her speak to Ethan that way.

She examined the form.

For several seconds, nobody interrupted.

Then she looked at me.

"Emma, are you sure this isn't your signature?"

"Yes."

"Could you have signed something like it and forgotten?"

I felt a familiar frustration.

Even with the date in front of her, she was looking for a way to make my memory the problem.

"I know what my signature looks like."

She glanced at the form again.

I continued.

"And I know what name I used before our wedding."

Margaret looked toward Ethan.

"Then who completed this?"

He moved in his chair.

"Mother, there were a lot of documents during that period."

She waited.

He said the company had been dealing with complicated arrangements.

He suggested that somebody might have entered information incorrectly.

He spoke about the administrative process.

I listened.

Some of what he said might have been possible.

An incorrectly prepared form was not automatically proof of deliberate wrongdoing.

A signature could have been copied into the wrong file.

A document could have been dated incorrectly.

Those were matters investigators would need to establish.

But Ethan had not explained the signature.

And he had not explained why my name appeared on an authorization I said I never signed.

Margaret finally asked the question directly.

"Did Emma sign this?"

Ethan looked at me.

Then at the paper.

"She signed a number of documents."

"That's not what I asked."

His face reddened.

"Mother, stop."

Margaret stared at him.

I could see something changing.

She was accustomed to defending her son.

She had explained away his behavior for years.

When he arrived late, she blamed work.

When he spoke harshly, she blamed stress.

When I felt hurt, she suggested I was too sensitive.

But this time there was a document.

A date.

A name.

Something she could hold in her hands.

And she could not make it disappear by telling me to be more understanding.

Rebecca remained quiet.

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

He explained that Ethan could consult his attorney before responding further.

He made clear that the records required proper examination.

Ethan looked toward the deputy.

Then the doorway.

Then me.

I saw the calculation in his expression.

He was trying to determine what everybody knew.

I had seen that look in his office before.

It appeared whenever a meeting stopped going as planned.

But this time, I wasn't an employee waiting to be dismissed.

I wasn't a wife waiting for permission to speak.

I was someone whose name appeared on a document I denied signing.

And qualified people were asking questions.

Margaret looked down at the authorization form.

She rubbed her thumb along the edge of the paper.

I noticed that her hand had begun to shake.

For years, she had insisted that Ethan knew how to manage everything.

Now she was asking him for an explanation.

And he was not providing one.

I did not feel happy watching her become frightened.

I knew how painful it could be to discover that someone you trusted might not have been honest.

But I could not rescue her from that discovery.

I had spent too long doing that for myself.

Margaret raised her eyes.

"Ethan, I need you to tell me what happened."

He looked at her.

Then he looked away.

And for the first time that morning, his mother did not defend his silence.

<a
