15 – I Wanted to Believe Evan Was Losing His Nerve, but the Gun Against Danielle Told Me the Danger Had Not Passed

I could see that Evan was uneasy.

There was no point pretending otherwise.

His eyes kept moving.

He looked toward the front door.

Then the kitchen window.

Then back at me.

His expression was no longer confident.

I wanted to believe that meant something good.

Perhaps he was reconsidering.

Perhaps he was beginning to understand what he was doing.

Perhaps he was looking for a way to end the situation.

But I didn't know.

Those were only possibilities.

And I couldn't risk Danielle's safety on possibilities.

I looked at his hand.

The gun remained against her side.

That was the fact I kept returning to.

Whatever Evan was thinking, he had not moved the weapon away.

He had not allowed Danielle to step aside.

He had not shown us that the danger was over.

So I remained afraid.

Danielle stood behind him.

Her face was pale.

Tears continued down her cheeks.

Her hands were shaking.

I wanted her to know that I had noticed everything.

Not only the gun.

Not only Evan's nervous movements.

But what this was doing to her.

I could see how hard she was trying to remain still.

I could see how frightened she was to move.

I could see that she wanted the moment to end as badly as I did.

I wished I could tell her that I understood.

But speaking still felt dangerous.

I looked at Evan.

He was watching me again.

I kept my face neutral.

I didn't want him to see how badly I wanted to move toward Danielle.

That urge had not gone away.

If anything, it had become stronger.

Every tear made me want to reach her.

Every small movement of her hands made me want to steady them.

Every glance she gave me made me want to tell her I was there.

But the weapon remained between what I wanted and what I could safely do.

I had never felt that difference so sharply.

I took a slow breath.

Evan's eyes moved toward the front door.

I noticed immediately.

Then he looked toward the window.

I watched him without turning my head much.

His repeated glances had begun to feel like part of the danger.

I couldn't tell whether he was looking for an escape or watching for someone else.

I had no way to know.

But I could see that he wasn't relaxed.

That made me careful.

I didn't want to surprise him.

I didn't want to challenge him.

I didn't want to do anything that might make him react without thinking.

Danielle was standing too close to the gun.

That was what mattered.

I wondered whether he realized how much fear he had created.

The thought made me angry.

He didn't need to shout.

He didn't need to threaten us again.

The weapon was enough.

His quiet warning had been enough.

We were both standing still because of it.

I thought about how wrong that was.

Then I forced myself to focus.

Anger could wait.

Danielle's safety could not.

I looked at her face.

She was looking down slightly.

Her lips remained pale.

I could see tears beneath her eyes.

I wanted to speak her name.

But I didn't.

I was afraid she would turn toward me.

I was afraid Evan would react.

I was afraid of making an already dangerous situation worse.

So I held the words back.

I watched her instead.

I wanted her to feel that she wasn't alone.

I hoped my presence mattered.

Even if I couldn't help her in the way I wanted.

Evan moved his gaze toward me.

For a moment, I thought he might say something.

I waited.

He remained silent.

I didn't know whether that was good.

I didn't know whether he was thinking about his next move.

I couldn't know.

And not knowing was exhausting.

I wanted clear instructions.

I wanted a safe way to help.

I wanted certainty.

None of those things were available.

I had to make decisions with the little information I had.

The gun was there.

Danielle was frightened.

Evan was uneasy.

And I was close enough to see everything but unable to change it.

That was the situation.

I couldn't make it less serious by hoping.

I couldn't make it disappear by remaining silent.

But I could avoid making it worse.

I held on to that thought.

Evan looked toward the front door again.

I watched his face.

Then his hand.

Then Danielle.

The gun remained against her side.

I felt my fear return as strongly as before.

His nervousness had changed nothing important.

Until he lowered the weapon, I could not believe the danger had passed.

<a
