11 – I Could See the Fear in Danielle’s Eyes, but I Could Not Tell Her What I Was Thinking Without Drawing Evan’s Attention

I wanted to speak to Danielle more than anything.

Not to ask questions.

Not to explain.

Just to let her hear my voice.

I thought it might help her.

Then I remembered the gun.

Evan still had it against her side.

He was close enough to notice almost anything she did.

If she turned toward me, he would see.

If she answered me, he would hear.

If she tried to move closer, he could stop her.

I had to keep reminding myself of those facts.

My need to comfort her could not come before her safety.

That hurt.

I had never imagined there would be a moment when saying something kind to my daughter might be dangerous.

But there we were.

Danielle stood behind him.

Her hands trembled.

Her cheeks were wet.

Her mouth remained closed.

I watched her carefully.

I wondered whether she was waiting for me to act.

I wondered whether she was afraid I would act.

I couldn't tell.

That uncertainty troubled me.

I wanted to understand what she needed.

But I couldn't ask.

I looked at Evan.

His eyes moved toward the front door again.

Then toward the kitchen window.

Then back at me.

The pattern had become familiar.

I noticed it each time.

I still couldn't understand it.

He looked uneasy.

That much seemed clear.

But I had no way of knowing what his uneasiness meant for Danielle.

I wanted to believe that he was reconsidering.

That he might lower the weapon.

That he might let her step away.

But I had not seen him do any of those things.

I could not treat hope as evidence.

I looked back at my daughter.

She took a small breath.

Her shoulders moved.

I watched Evan's reaction.

He glanced toward her.

Then away.

I felt a little relief.

It was such a small thing.

He had not reacted to her breathing.

I hated that it was something I felt grateful for.

A person should not have to be grateful for being allowed to breathe.

Especially not in her own mother's home.

I looked at the loose fabric covering the weapon.

It hung around Danielle's side.

Something so ordinary had become frightening to me.

I knew I would remember it.

Not because there was anything special about the dress.

Because I would remember where the gun had been hidden.

I would remember how close it had been to her.

I would remember watching that spot and wishing I could make the danger disappear.

Evan turned his attention toward me.

I tried not to change my expression.

I wanted him to think I was listening.

I wanted him to see that I wasn't about to rush forward.

At the same time, I didn't want him to think I was indifferent.

I had no idea whether he cared what I felt.

I only knew I didn't want to make him more nervous.

It was a strange balance.

Trying to appear calm while feeling terrified.

Trying to remain silent while wanting to shout.

Trying to protect someone without moving toward them.

I had never faced anything like it.

Danielle looked at me briefly.

I met her eyes.

For one moment, I felt as though we were speaking without words.

I wanted her to know I had seen the danger.

I wanted her to know I wasn't going to ignore it.

But I couldn't know what she understood from my face.

Maybe she saw fear.

Maybe she saw helplessness.

Maybe she saw the effort I was making to remain calm.

I hoped it was the last one.

She lowered her eyes again.

I felt something tighten in my throat.

I wanted to cry.

I didn't let myself.

Not because crying would make me weak.

Because I was afraid that if I started, I might lose the careful control I had been maintaining.

I needed to keep thinking.

I needed to keep watching.

And I needed to remember that Danielle was relying on whatever judgment I could still make.

Evan glanced toward the kitchen window.

I noticed the movement.

Then his eyes returned to me.

I wondered whether he was trying to decide something.

I wondered whether he was waiting.

I wondered whether he was becoming more frightened.

But I couldn't know.

I stopped myself from building explanations around his expression.

The weapon was what mattered.

It had not moved away from Danielle.

She was still unable to leave.

Nothing about his nervousness changed that.

I looked at my daughter's hands again.

They were still trembling.

I wanted to tell her she didn't have to hold herself so tightly.

Then I realized she probably did.

She was trying to avoid making a sudden movement.

And I was doing the same.

We were both paying attention to Evan.

Both trying not to frighten him.

Both waiting for a chance to feel safe.

The thought made me sad.

It also made me angry.

But I kept that anger to myself.

I couldn't allow it to become the reason something happened to Danielle.

I took a careful breath.

I watched Evan.

He watched me.

And Danielle remained behind him.

I had never wanted a moment to end so badly.

Yet I knew I could not rush it.

I kept my hands still.

I kept my voice quiet by saying nothing.

And I stayed focused on my daughter, hoping she understood that my silence was not the same as leaving her alone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Stood in My Own Home Watching
