10 – The Longer My Daughter Remained Silent, the More I Understood That My Fear Could Not Be Allowed to Make Her Situation Worse

I began to understand that my own feelings were becoming another problem.

I was frightened.

I was angry.

And I was desperate to make something happen.

None of those feelings could protect Danielle by themselves.

I had to be careful with them.

Evan remained between us.

The weapon was still pressed against my daughter's side.

She stood behind him without speaking.

I looked at her hands.

They were shaking.

I looked at her face.

Tears marked both cheeks.

Then I looked at Evan.

He was watching me again.

I wished I could understand what he saw when he looked at us.

Did he see how frightened Danielle was?

Did he understand what he was doing?

Did he care?

I couldn't answer any of those questions.

And I couldn't afford to assume I knew.

I had to judge him by what he was doing.

Not by what I hoped he might feel.

He had not lowered the gun.

He had not allowed Danielle to move away.

He had not given either of us a reason to believe the danger was over.

That was enough.

I tried not to think beyond the next few seconds.

Thinking too far ahead made my fear worse.

I could imagine all sorts of terrible things.

But imagining them did not make me better prepared.

It only made me want to act before I understood what was happening.

So I focused on what I could see.

Evan's face.

Danielle's hands.

The fabric of her dress.

The front door.

The kitchen window.

Those small details had become the whole world to me.

I watched Evan glance toward the window.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he looked back at me.

For a moment, I wondered whether I should speak while his attention was divided.

The thought disappeared almost immediately.

His attention wasn't divided enough.

He was still holding the weapon.

Danielle was still within his reach.

I couldn't pretend otherwise.

I took a slow breath.

My chest felt tight.

I wanted to move my shoulders.

I didn't.

Even an ordinary movement seemed dangerous now.

I had never been so conscious of how much freedom there was in simply moving around a room.

Danielle had lost that freedom.

So had I, in a different way.

We were both waiting for Evan to decide what happened next.

The thought made me furious.

But anger was not going to help me unless I controlled it.

I looked at Danielle again.

She seemed to be concentrating on staying still.

Her face was pale.

Her lips were nearly colorless.

I wanted to tell her to keep breathing.

But she was breathing.

I could see the slight movement of her shoulders.

I held on to that.

One breath.

Then another.

I counted without meaning to.

It gave me something to focus on besides the gun.

But I always returned to the gun.

I couldn't help it.

I was afraid that if I looked away for too long, something would change before I noticed.

Evan shifted his gaze toward the front door.

I followed the movement with my eyes.

Nothing about the doorway explained his concern.

I didn't know what he was thinking.

I didn't know whether he was considering leaving.

I didn't know whether he was afraid of being interrupted.

I only knew he kept checking.

The repeated movement made me wonder whether something had unsettled him.

But wondering was all I could do.

I couldn't base Danielle's safety on a guess.

I looked back at him.

His expression remained tense.

He was no longer showing the easy confidence I had noticed before.

Yet that uncertainty had not made him less threatening.

If anything, I was more afraid of what he might do suddenly.

I wanted him to calm down.

I wanted him to stop looking around.

I wanted him to realize that he could simply move the gun away from Danielle.

But I had no control over those choices.

I could only control myself.

That realization was difficult to accept.

It meant I couldn't force the moment to end.

I couldn't make him behave differently.

And I couldn't promise Danielle that I would fix everything.

I had spent much of my life wanting to give my daughter certainty.

Now certainty was the one thing I couldn't offer.

I looked at her eyes.

She glanced toward me.

I kept my face as steady as possible.

I hoped that was enough to tell her I was still thinking.

Still paying attention.

Still trying.

I didn't know whether she understood.

I wished I could ask.

But I couldn't risk starting a conversation.

Evan was listening.

He was watching.

And the gun had not moved.

I thought about how strange it was that silence could require so much effort.

Normally, I would have spoken without hesitation.

Now I had to keep stopping words before they reached my mouth.

I wanted to ask him to let her go.

I wanted to tell Danielle I loved her.

I wanted to demand that he put the gun down.

Instead, I stayed quiet.

My silence did not mean I had nothing to say.

It meant I was afraid of what speaking might cause.

I looked at Danielle again.

She was still there.

Still standing.

Still breathing.

That was what mattered most.

I told myself I would not make a sudden movement simply to feel less helpless.

I would not let my anger take over.

And I would not confuse doing something with doing the right thing.

I kept watching Evan.

I kept my attention on his hand.

And I remained still because I could not yet see a safer choice.

Click
