7 – Evan Kept Looking Between the Front Door and Kitchen Window While I Tried to Understand What He Might Do Next

I started noticing a pattern.

Evan looked toward the front door.

Then toward the kitchen window.

Then back at me.

He had done it more than once.

Each time, I felt the same fear.

I didn't know what he was looking for.

I didn't know whether he wanted to leave.

I didn't know whether he was afraid someone might appear.

I only knew he wasn't relaxed anymore.

His face had changed.

The certainty I had noticed earlier was gone.

But the gun remained.

That was what mattered.

Whatever Evan was feeling, he still controlled whether Danielle could move.

I watched his hand.

I kept waiting for him to lower the weapon.

He didn't.

Danielle stood behind him.

Her cheeks were wet.

She was trembling.

I could tell she was tired of holding herself so still.

But she didn't try to leave.

I understood why.

I was afraid for her too.

Every small movement felt dangerous.

I wanted to tell her to keep breathing.

But I didn't want to speak.

I wanted to ask Evan to move away.

But I didn't want to provoke him.

I wanted to get closer.

But I didn't want him to misunderstand.

It felt as though every helpful instinct I had was being turned against me.

I had always thought fear would make me run toward my daughter.

Now fear kept my feet in place.

I looked at the front door.

For years, it had meant something simple to me.

A way into my home.

A way out.

Now I saw it through Evan's eyes, or at least through the direction of his gaze.

He kept checking it.

I wondered why.

Then I looked toward the kitchen window.

He had been watching that too.

The room felt different because of those ordinary things.

The door.

The window.

The space between us.

Nothing had changed about them.

But I could no longer look at them without wondering what Evan was planning.

I didn't know what he was planning.

I had to keep reminding myself of that.

I couldn't see inside his mind.

I couldn't assume he would do something reasonable.

And I couldn't assume his nervousness would make him less dangerous.

A person could be frightened and still hurt someone.

I knew that.

I could see Danielle knew it too.

She held herself stiffly.

Her hands stayed near her sides.

She didn't even reach up to touch her face.

I wanted to wipe away her tears.

That small wish hurt more than I expected.

I had spent years doing simple things for my daughter.

Offering comfort.

Listening when she was upset.

Trying to make difficult moments easier.

Now I couldn't do any of those things.

I was close enough to see every tear.

But I couldn't touch her.

I could only watch.

Evan noticed my attention.

He looked directly at me.

I kept my expression still.

I didn't want him to think I was challenging him.

I didn't want him to believe I was about to rush forward.

I wasn't.

I knew better than to move toward a gun pressed against Danielle.

But I was afraid he might misunderstand any sign of determination on my face.

So I tried to appear calm.

It was difficult.

My thoughts were anything but calm.

I kept asking myself the same questions.

What should I say?

What should I do?

How could I help without making things worse?

No answer felt certain.

I thought about the moment I had first understood what Evan was doing.

That small change in his expression had told me something.

He knew I had noticed.

At least, that was how it seemed to me.

And since then, he had been checking the room.

Watching the door.

Watching the window.

Watching me.

I wondered whether he was trying to decide what to do.

The thought made me more careful.

If he was uncertain, I didn't want to push him into a sudden decision.

But I also couldn't make myself believe that silence alone would solve the problem.

I was caught between those two fears.

Acting too soon.

Waiting too long.

I didn't know which was worse.

Danielle looked at me briefly.

I met her eyes.

I tried to hold her gaze without making Evan suspicious.

For an instant, I felt as though she was asking me something.

I couldn't tell what.

Maybe she wanted help.

Maybe she wanted me to stay still.

Maybe she was simply looking for someone familiar.

I couldn't know.

I wanted to answer all three possibilities.

I wanted to tell her I saw her.

I wanted to tell her I wasn't going anywhere.

I wanted to tell her that I was trying.

Instead, I remained silent.

Evan's eyes moved back to the front door.

I followed the movement.

Then I returned my attention to the weapon.

It was still there.

Still hidden beneath the dress.

Still close enough to make every second frightening.

I felt my anger again.

But I held it down.

Danielle needed careful decisions, not an outburst.

I understood that much.

I didn't understand what would happen next.

And I couldn't pretend I did.

So I kept watching Evan.

I kept watching Danielle.

And I waited for a real change, not one I had imagined.
