gun was pressed against Danielle.

That was the one thing I could not stop thinking about.

Not Evan's expression.

Not the front door.

Not the kitchen window.

The gun.

I had never imagined that something so small could make me feel so powerless.

Danielle stood just behind him.

Her face was wet with tears.

She was trying to remain perfectly still.

I could see how much effort it took.

Her shoulders were tight.

Her fingers moved slightly before she forced them to stop.

I wanted to tell her she was doing the right thing.

But I didn't know if she was.

That was the worst part.

I couldn't promise her that staying still would keep her safe.

I could only hope it would.

Evan's eyes moved toward me.

I kept my expression as calm as I could.

There was nothing calm about what I felt.

My heart was beating so hard that I wondered whether he could see it.

I wanted to look away from him.

I couldn't.

I needed to know where he was looking.

I needed to know whether his hand moved.

And I needed to see Danielle.

All three things mattered.

I had never paid so much attention to so little movement.

Evan glanced toward the front door again.

His expression tightened.

I wondered what he was afraid of.

I wondered whether he was expecting someone.

Then I stopped myself.

I didn't know.

Guessing would not help Danielle.

I had to pay attention to what was actually happening.

He still had the gun.

She still couldn't move away.

And I was still standing there.

I hated that last part.

Standing.

Watching.

Waiting.

It made me feel like I was failing her.

I had spent so much of my life believing that protecting my daughter meant stepping in when something was wrong.

Sometimes that meant speaking.

Sometimes it meant helping her make a decision.

Sometimes it meant standing beside her when she was afraid.

But this was different.

Getting closer to Danielle might put her in more danger.

Speaking might make Evan react.

Even reaching toward her could be misunderstood.

I had no way of knowing.

I looked at her again.

She was staring past Evan.

Her mouth remained closed.

The tears had not stopped.

I tried to catch her attention without making an obvious movement.

For one brief moment, her eyes shifted toward me.

I couldn't tell whether she understood what I was trying to say.

I wasn't even sure I knew what I was trying to say.

Be careful.

I'm here.

I'm frightened too.

All of those things were true.

None of them could change where the gun was.

Evan spoke quietly.

"Don't make this harder."

I heard the words clearly.

I couldn't tell whether he meant them for Danielle, for me, or for both of us.

I didn't answer.

Danielle didn't answer either.

His voice frightened me because it sounded controlled.

He wasn't shouting.

He didn't need to.

The weapon gave every word more weight than it should have had.

I looked down briefly.

Then I looked back at him.

I did not want him to think I was preparing to do something.

I wanted to appear harmless.

That was a difficult thing to admit about myself.

I wanted to be the person who stood up to him.

Instead, I was trying not to frighten a man who was threatening my child.

But I knew why.

Danielle was too close to the gun.

That fact came before everything else.

Evan shifted his gaze toward the kitchen window.

I noticed the movement immediately.

Then he looked toward the door.

He seemed to be checking both places again and again.

His attention never stayed away from us for long.

I wondered whether he realized how obvious his nervousness had become.

A few moments earlier, his face had changed when he understood that I had noticed something.

Now I could see that uncertainty returning.

I didn't know whether that was good or bad.

I wanted to believe it might make him reconsider.

But I couldn't trust that hope.

His hand remained close to Danielle's body.

The gun did not move away.

I tried to focus on her breathing.

It was difficult to see beneath the loose material of her dress.

But I could see her shoulders rise slightly.

Then lower.

She was breathing.

I kept returning to that small fact.

I didn't know how long we had been standing there.

Time had stopped making sense to me.

Every second seemed important.

Yet nothing happened that I could use to help her.

Evan watched me.

I watched him.

Danielle remained behind him.

I wanted to ask him to let her step away.

The words formed in my mind.

Then I imagined him reacting badly.

I kept quiet.

I wasn't proud of my silence.

I was afraid of what speaking might cost.

That fear did not make me love Danielle any less.

If anything, it made me notice every small sign of her distress.

The way she held her arms.

The way she kept her lips pressed together.

The way her eyes moved without her head following.

I had never seen her so frightened.

I hoped she could not see how frightened I was.

Evan moved his head slightly.

I followed the motion.

My attention went immediately back to the hand holding the weapon.

Still there.

Still too close.

I wanted him to put the gun down.

I wanted to see both of his hands empty.

I wanted Danielle to be able to stand beside me instead of behind him.

Those wishes were simple.

But none of them had happened.

I took a careful breath.

I tried not to let it sound like a sigh.

Evan looked toward me again.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then his eyes returned to the front door.

I understood that I could not make him release her by staring at him.

I could not make Danielle safe by wishing the danger away.

I had to remain careful until something changed.

That was the only decision I could make.

So I stayed still.

And I kept watching the weapon.

<a
