3 – Every Time Evan Looked Toward the Door, I Wondered Whether My Daughter Would Have a Chance to Escape

I could not stop watching Evan's eyes.

They kept moving.

The front door.

The kitchen window.

Me.

Each glance lasted only a moment.

But together they told me he was no longer as comfortable as he wanted to appear.

I wondered whether he was looking for a way out.

I wondered whether he expected someone to come through the door.

I had no answer.

All I could do was watch.

Danielle remained behind him.

The gun was still pressed against her side.

I could see enough of its position to know the danger had not passed.

Nothing about his uncertainty had made him release her.

Nothing about her tears had changed his behavior.

That was what frightened me most.

She was plainly terrified.

He could see that.

And he still kept the gun where it was.

I looked at Danielle's hands.

They had not stopped shaking.

I wondered how long she could remain so still.

I wondered whether her knees might give way.

I wanted her to sit down.

Then I realized I didn't want her making any movement at all while he held that weapon.

Every possible choice seemed dangerous.

I could say something.

He might react.

I could move closer.

He might react.

I could remain silent.

He might react anyway.

There was no answer that felt safe.

I had never understood fear in such a practical way before.

It wasn't only the feeling in my chest.

It was having to think about where I stood.

Where she stood.

Where his hand rested.

How quickly he could move.

My attention kept returning to the loose material of Danielle's dress.

It covered most of the weapon from view.

That ordinary piece of clothing had become part of what made the threat so difficult to see.

I wished the gun were somewhere else.

Anywhere else.

I could hardly stand looking at the place where it touched her.

I thought about saying her name.

Just once.

"Danielle."

But I held the word inside.

I didn't know whether hearing me might make her move.

I didn't want to startle her.

I didn't want to give Evan another reason to tighten his control.

I looked at her eyes instead.

She seemed to be looking somewhere past him.

I couldn't tell whether she was avoiding his face or simply trying to endure what was happening.

Her tears continued.

Still no sound.

The silence made the room feel unfamiliar.

This was my home.

I knew the front door.

I knew the kitchen window.

They were ordinary parts of a place where my daughter should have been safe.

Now Evan was looking at them as though they mattered to whatever he might do next.

I found that difficult to accept.

I wanted my home back.

More than that, I wanted my daughter back.

Not standing behind him.

Not trembling.

Not afraid to move her hands.

I wanted to see her step away.

I wanted the space between them to widen.

It remained exactly as it was.

I noticed another change in Evan's face.

He was still watching me.

But the look was harder to read now.

I couldn't tell whether he was trying to frighten me or whether he was frightened himself.

I decided it didn't matter.

His feelings could not be my first concern.

Danielle had to be.

She was the one with the gun against her body.

She was the one who had been told not to move.

She was the one trying to cry without making a sound.

I had never seen her in that condition before.

I hoped I would never see it again.

That hope was all I had.

No certainty.

No reassurance.

Just the sight of my daughter breathing in front of me.

I focused on that.

As long as she was standing there, I needed to be careful.

I couldn't allow my anger to decide for me.

I couldn't allow panic to make me careless.

So I watched Evan.

And I kept waiting for the weapon to move away from her.

It didn't.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Had Never Felt So Powerless as a Mother, Knowing One Wrong Movement Could
