I'm asking questions you probably can't answer.”

He remained patient.

I rubbed my hands together.

“I just don't understand how she could have had this money without any of us knowing.”

There.

That was the real question.

Not whether the check was genuine.

Edward had answered that.

Not whether my father had ripped up his copy.

I had watched him do it.

I wanted to know how a person could be so familiar and still have a part of her life completely unknown to her family.

I thought about all the years I had known Grandma.

I had always recognized her voice.

I knew her name.

I knew where she fit in our family.

Those things had made me feel as though I understood her.

But now I was realizing there were questions I had never asked.

Important questions.

Not because I was entitled to know the answers.

Because I had assumed answers without ever hearing them.

I didn't know how Grandma managed her money.

I didn't know what financial decisions she had made.

I didn't know how long she had possessed the funds behind the check.

I didn't know what had led her to choose six million dollars.

I didn't know why she had given the checks at Christmas.

And I didn't know whether she had expected anyone to believe her.

That last question hurt.

Because I wanted to believe she had expected better from us.

I wanted to believe she had thought we would take her seriously.

But the truth was, I couldn't know.

Not until I asked her.

I looked toward Edward.

“It's strange.”

“What is?”

“I've known her my whole life.”

I paused.

“And I'm sitting here realizing I may not have understood her at all.”

Edward listened.

I tried to explain.

“I knew she was Grandma. I knew what that meant to me.”

I looked at the check.

“But I didn't know what she was capable of giving.”

The words sounded wrong.

Capable of giving.

As if Grandma's worth had somehow increased because she possessed money.

I didn't like that.

I wanted to correct myself.

It wasn't that Grandma had become more important.

She had always been important.

The problem was that I had limited my idea of her.

I had reduced her to what I expected.

And when she did something outside those expectations, I had assumed she was pretending.

I looked down.

“That sounds terrible, doesn't it?”

Edward didn't judge me.

I was grateful for that.

But I didn't need him to judge me.

I could do it myself.

I had been careless.

Not with money.

With trust.

I had accepted my family's laughter as evidence.

And I had ignored the seriousness in Grandma's face.

I wondered whether my father was doing the same thing.

He had always seemed sure of his opinions.

At Christmas, he hadn't hesitated before tearing the check.

I had followed that confidence.

Not in action.

But in belief.

I thought about how easily certainty could spread around a table.

One person laughed.

Another joined in.

Before long, everyone treated the thing as ridiculous.

Even the people who weren't laughing stopped asking questions.

That had been me.

I wasn't the loudest person at dinner.

But silence didn't mean I had understood.

I had been just as confused.

And just as wrong.

I looked at the check again.

I imagined it being placed in my hands at Christmas.

I remembered how strange it had felt.

There was nothing visibly special about it.

It was ordinary paper carrying an extraordinary amount.

I had focused on the extraordinary part.

I hadn't thought enough about the ordinary person giving it to me.

Grandma.

The person who had chosen to write my name.

The person who had decided to hand me that document.

I wondered whether she had thought about what I might do with it.

I couldn't know.

But I could understand that she had made a decision.

And I had a responsibility to respond carefully.

I didn't want to rush.

I didn't want to make plans for the money while I still didn't understand the circumstances.

I didn't want to use the discovery to make my father feel foolish.

And I didn't want to contact Grandma only because the check was valuable.

Those concerns were beginning to matter more than the number.

I rested my hands on my knees.

“Mr. Collins, I know you've already answered the question about the funds.”

He nodded.

“And I'm grateful.”

I took a breath.

“But I need to separate that from everything else.”

He listened.

“The bank can confirm what the check is.”

I glanced at the paper.

“But only Grandma can tell me why she gave it to us.”

Saying it plainly helped.

I had been expecting one person to explain everything.

That wasn't possible.

Edward could explain the financial side.

Grandma could explain her intention.

And my father would eventually have to speak for his own actions.

I couldn't solve all those problems inside one office.

I had to accept that.

I thought about leaving the bank.

I wasn't ready to do it yet.

There were still practical questions I wanted to ask.

But I knew my next important conversation wouldn't happen here.

It would happen with Grandma.

I wanted to hear her voice.

I wanted to tell her I had taken the check seriously enough to have it verified.

I wanted to apologize for doubting her.

And I wanted to ask why she hadn't explained herself at Christmas.

Not accusingly.

Not as though she owed me an account of her life.

Simply because I wanted to understand.

I looked toward the office door.

Beyond it, people were going about their normal day.

Employees were working.

Customers were handling ordinary business.

Nothing about the bank had changed.

Yet I knew I would remember this visit for a long time.

I had entered the building as someone who thought he understood his family.

Now I wasn't so sure.

I had learned one fact about Grandma.

Just one.

She had enough money behind the check to make it genuine.

And that single fact had forced me to reconsider everything I had assumed at Christmas.

I looked back at Edward.

“I don't think the money is what bothers me most.”

He waited.

“It's that she was telling us something serious, and none of us listened.”

I stopped.

That was the truth.

I could accept being surprised by six million dollars.

Anyone might be surprised.

What I struggled to accept was the way we had responded to the surprise.

We hadn't asked.

We hadn't listened.

We had laughed.

And my father had torn up the evidence in front of her.

I couldn't undo that moment.

But I could stop pretending it hadn't mattered.

I looked at the check one more time.

Evelyn Harper.

Six million dollars.

Two things that had seemed impossible together.

Now I knew they belonged together.

I didn't know the whole explanation.

But I knew enough to change my behavior.

The next time Grandma spoke, I would listen.

Not because she had money.

Because she was Grandma.

And I should have listened the first time.

<a
