6 – I Could Not Forget the Sound of My Father Tearing His Check, Especially After Learning Grandma’s Money Was Real

The sound kept returning to me.

Paper tearing.

That was all it had been.

A short, dry sound at the Christmas table.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing that should have mattered.

But now I could hear it whenever I thought about my father.

I was still in Edward Collins's office.

He had confirmed that Grandma's check was genuine.

He had confirmed the funds existed.

Yet my thoughts kept moving away from the money.

They returned to that evening.

To my father's expression.

To Grandma's silence.

To the way nobody seemed to understand what was happening.

I looked at the check again.

My name was connected to an amount I had never expected to see.

I should have been thinking about what I might do with it.

Instead, I was thinking about a piece of paper that no longer existed in one piece.

My father's check.

I wondered whether he remembered tearing it.

Of course he remembered the action.

But did he remember Grandma's face?

Did he remember the way she sat quietly afterward?

Or had he already forgotten the whole thing?

I couldn't know.

He had seemed so convinced that the check was meaningless.

Maybe he still believed that.

I pictured him explaining it to someone later.

Grandma had played a strange Christmas joke.

He had torn up the paper.

Everybody had laughed.

End of story.

That was probably how the evening would have remained in my memory if I hadn't visited the bank.

I felt uneasy.

One decision had separated those two versions of Christmas.

I had kept my check.

He had destroyed his.

I hadn't understood what either decision meant.

I looked toward Edward.

“Can I tell you something?”

“Certainly.”

“I didn't think about the money when Dad tore his check.”

Edward listened.

“I just thought he was embarrassing Grandma.”

I paused.

“That's why I kept mine.”

For the first time, I understood how small my reason had been.

I hadn't shown any special wisdom.

I hadn't anticipated that the check might be genuine.

I had simply hesitated.

Sometimes a moment of hesitation was enough to change what happened next.

That realization made me uncomfortable.

Because it meant I couldn't congratulate myself too much.

I was sitting in a bank manager's private office with a genuine six-million-dollar check.

But I had nearly been as careless as my father.

I looked down at my hands.

“If I'd followed everyone else, I might have torn mine too.”

Edward didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

I could imagine it.

The pieces falling.

The laughter continuing.

The check disappearing with the rest of the Christmas paper.

And me going back to Boulder with nothing left to verify.

I let the thought sit for a moment.

Then I looked up.

“I'm glad I kept it.”

The words felt too small.

Glad.

I had no better word.

I wasn't ready to call myself fortunate.

I wasn't ready to feel wealthy.

The situation still seemed unreal.

But I was glad the check hadn't been destroyed.

I was glad I could still read Grandma's name.

I was glad there was something concrete in front of me.

Something that proved she hadn't simply invented the number for entertainment.

I thought about the question I had asked Edward earlier.

Whether tearing a check meant losing the money.

I still needed to understand the consequences.

But I was beginning to see another kind of loss.

My father hadn't just torn a financial document.

He had rejected Grandma's gift in front of everyone.

He hadn't waited for an explanation.

He hadn't asked what she meant.

He had decided the paper was worthless and acted on that belief.

Even if the document could somehow be replaced, that moment couldn't.

I knew it sounded sentimental.

But it was true.

Grandma had watched him dismiss something she had chosen to give.

I couldn't make that disappear by learning the correct banking procedure.

I rubbed my forehead.

Edward gave me time.

The office remained quiet.

I was grateful he didn't try to fill every silence.

I had too much to think about.

I remembered returning to Boulder after Christmas.

I had been carrying the check, but I hadn't treated it as especially valuable.

I hadn't called anyone about it.

I hadn't rushed to verify it immediately.

I had allowed the question to sit in my mind.

Looking back, I wondered why.

I think I was afraid of looking foolish.

It was easier to believe my family was right than to risk discovering I was wrong.

That embarrassed me now.

I had been more concerned about being laughed at than about understanding Grandma.

If the bank had told me the check was worthless, I might have felt relieved.

I could have gone home knowing everyone had been right.

I wouldn't have needed to rethink Christmas.

I wouldn't have needed to question my father's judgment.

I wouldn't have needed to face the possibility that Grandma had been serious all along.

But that wasn't what happened.

Edward had looked at the check.

He had asked questions.

He had verified the information.

And he had told me the money was real.

There was no way to return to my old assumptions.

I looked at him again.

“Mr. Collins, do you think I should tell my father what you've said?”

Edward considered the question.

I immediately understood that the decision belonged to me.

He couldn't tell me how to manage my family.

He didn't know my father.

He didn't know Grandma beyond the information relevant to the check.

And he hadn't been at Christmas dinner.

I needed to stop asking him to solve questions that weren't banking questions.

I lowered my eyes.

“I suppose that's something I need to decide.”

He listened.

I thought about calling my father.

I imagined his reaction.

He might refuse to believe me.

He might demand proof.

He might remember what he'd done and immediately become frightened.

Those were possibilities.

Not facts.

I couldn't know which one would happen.

And I wasn't ready to find out.

There was someone else I needed to speak with first.

Grandma.

The thought was becoming clearer every time it returned.

She had created the checks.

She knew why.

She knew what she intended.

And she was the one person who could explain the part of Christmas I couldn't understand.

I had spent days trying to interpret her silence.

Maybe that was the wrong approach.

Maybe I should have simply asked her.

I looked at the check.

I remembered the way she handed it to me.

At the time, I had barely known how to react.

I was so focused on the number that I hadn't paid enough attention to her.

I wished I could go back.

Not to change the amount.

Not to ask for more.

Just to look her in the eyes and thank her properly.

I had never thought gratitude could become so complicated.

But it had.

Because now I was grateful for a gift I hadn't believed in.

And sorry for a moment I couldn't undo.

I wondered whether Grandma knew I had kept the check.

She had seen me receive it.

But I didn't know whether she knew what happened after I left.

I hadn't told her.

Maybe she assumed I had thrown it away.

Maybe she assumed I would eventually take it to the bank.

I couldn't say.

I had no right to invent answers for her.

That was another lesson I was learning.

I had been wrong because I thought I knew what she could afford.

I didn't want to be wrong again because I thought I knew what she felt.

I took a slow breath.

Edward looked toward the document.

I followed his gaze.

Six million dollars.

That number seemed to grow heavier every time I saw it.

Not because the paper weighed anything.

Because of everything I now associated with it.

My father's laughter.

Grandma's expression.

My own hesitation.

The silence after Christmas.

The drive back to Boulder.

And the private office where I had finally heard the truth.

I thought about the other checks.

Grandma had given each family member one.

I didn't know how many were still intact.

I didn't know whether anyone else had visited a bank.

I didn't know whether the others had spoken to Grandma.

Those gaps bothered me.

But I had to accept them.

I couldn't answer everything at once.

For now, I could only deal with what I knew.

My check was genuine.

The money behind it existed.

My father had torn up his copy.

And Grandma hadn't explained her reasons to me.

I looked at Edward.

“I think I understand the situation a little better.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

“Not all of it.”

“That's understandable.”

I almost smiled.

It was the closest I had come to feeling calm since entering the office.

I wasn't suddenly comfortable.

But I was beginning to separate what I knew from what I feared.

That mattered.

I had made enough decisions based on things I assumed were true.

I didn't want to do it again.

I glanced at the check one more time.

Then I spoke quietly.

“I wish Dad had just waited.”

That was all.

Five words.

But they contained everything I kept returning to.

If he'd waited, he could have asked Grandma what she meant.

If he'd waited, he could have taken the check home.

If he'd waited, he could have brought it to the bank himself.

Instead, he had made his decision in front of everyone.

I couldn't change that.

I couldn't even say for certain what financial consequences would follow.

But I knew one thing.

I would not tell Grandma that her gift had been a joke.

Not anymore.

I had learned too much.

And when I finally spoke with her, I wanted to listen before deciding what anything meant.
