That probably isn't something you can tell me.”

“It's understandable that you want to know.”

I nodded.

I wanted to know more than that.

I wanted to know how long she had been planning it.

I wanted to know why she had chosen Christmas.

I wanted to know why she hadn't warned anyone.

And most of all, I wanted to know what she had been thinking when my father tore up his check.

I couldn't forget her expression.

Not angry.

Not laughing.

Just quiet.

That silence had seemed unimportant during dinner.

Now it filled my thoughts.

I remembered looking toward her after the paper tore.

For a moment, our eyes had almost met.

I had looked away.

I was ashamed of that now.

Grandma had been sitting among her own family.

She had given each of us something that, according to Edward, was backed by real money.

And we had treated the gifts like entertainment.

My father had made his disbelief clear.

The rest of us hadn't been much better.

I hadn't defended Grandma.

I hadn't asked whether she was serious.

I had just sat there feeling uncomfortable.

And I had allowed the evening to continue.

I looked at Edward again.

“Did you say the entire amount was available?”

“Yes.”

“All six million?”

“Yes, Mr. Harper.”

I swallowed.

I knew I was repeating myself.

I couldn't help it.

The answer was too large.

Six million dollars was the sort of number people talked about without expecting it to enter their own lives.

It belonged in conversations about strangers.

People I didn't know.

People who lived very different lives.

Not my grandmother.

Not our Christmas table.

Not a check that I had carried back to Boulder without understanding its value.

I leaned backward.

The chair gave a faint sound beneath me.

For a moment, I stared at the ceiling.

Then I lowered my eyes.

I remembered my father's hands.

He had held the check as though he wanted everyone to see how foolish it was.

Then he tore it.

Once.

And again.

The pieces had fallen onto the table.

I hadn't tried to collect them.

Why would I have?

At the time, I thought they were worthless.

Now I couldn't stop wondering what had happened to them afterward.

Had someone thrown them away?

Had my father kept any of the pieces?

Had Grandma picked them up?

I didn't know.

I had been so certain that the whole thing meant nothing that I hadn't paid attention.

That was what bothered me most.

Not just that I had misunderstood.

I hadn't even been curious enough to notice what happened next.

Edward adjusted his glasses.

I looked at him.

“Earlier, you said my father might have made a costly mistake.”

He nodded.

“I remember.”

I leaned forward.

“Does tearing up a check automatically mean he loses the money?”

I wanted a simple answer.

Yes or no.

But I knew enough to realize that the situation might not be that simple.

A check was a financial document.

Destroying the paper wasn't necessarily the same as destroying the funds behind it.

I didn't know whether Grandma could issue another one.

I didn't know whether she would.

And I didn't know whether some other condition applied.

Those questions mattered.

I didn't want to make another terrible assumption.

Not after everything that had happened.

I looked at Edward.

“I don't want to tell my father something that might not be true.”

That surprised me.

Because part of me was angry at my father.

I was angry about his laughter.

Angry about the way he dismissed Grandma.

Angry because he had made it easier for everyone else to doubt her.

But I didn't want to punish him with information I couldn't confirm.

I wanted the facts.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

I had already seen what happened when people acted on certainty without understanding.

My father had demonstrated it at Christmas.

I didn't want to repeat his mistake in a different way.

I pressed my fingertips against the edge of the chair.

“Grandma gave everyone the same amount.”

Edward listened.

“At least, that's what she told us.”

I thought about the others at dinner.

I didn't know what they had done with their checks.

I hadn't asked.

After my father tore his, the entire evening had taken on an uncomfortable feeling.

Everyone seemed eager to move past the strange gifts.

I had followed along.

Now I wished I had paid closer attention.

Had anyone else kept theirs?

Had anyone quietly asked Grandma a question?

Had anyone believed her?

I couldn't answer any of those things.

And I wasn't going to pretend I could.

I took a breath.

“Mr. Collins, I'm starting to realize how little I actually know.”

He didn't contradict me.

I continued.

“I know she gave me the check.”

I touched the paper lightly.

“I know she gave the others checks too.”

I paused.

“And I know my father destroyed his.”

Those were facts.

Everything else had been interpretation.

The laughter.

The jokes.

The certainty that Grandma couldn't possibly have the money.

None of that proved anything.

It had only proved what we believed.

And our beliefs had been wrong.

I sat quietly for a moment.

Then I remembered something that made me feel even worse.

I hadn't contacted Grandma after returning to Boulder.

Not once.

I had carried her check home.

I had wondered about it.

I had decided to bring it to the bank.

But I hadn't asked her whether she wanted me to do any of those things.

I hadn't even told her that I was planning to verify it.

She might have appreciated the call.

She might have explained everything.

I would never know, because I hadn't made it.

I had treated the paper as a puzzle.

And forgotten there was a person behind it.

That thought hurt more than I expected.

I looked at Edward.

“I think I need to talk to my grandmother before I do anything else.”

He listened.

“I need to hear her explain why she gave us the checks.”

I glanced at the amount again.

“And I need to know whether she understands what happened at dinner.”

I stopped.

Of course she understood what happened.

She had watched it.

What I really needed to know was how she felt about it.

I had been too afraid to ask.

I looked at Grandma's name.

Evelyn Harper.

The same name I had known all my life.

The same woman I had almost dismissed because her gift seemed impossible.

I thought about the next time I would speak to her.

I didn't know what I would say first.

Thank you?

I'm sorry?

Why didn't you tell us?

All three questions seemed important.

But one stood out.

I wanted to ask whether she had been hurt when we laughed.

Because if she had, no amount of money could make that moment disappear.

I looked up at Edward.

“I came here thinking I might discover that my grandmother was joking.”

I swallowed.

“Instead, I've discovered that I didn't know her as well as I thought.”

Edward remained quiet.

I didn't need him to answer.

The check answered the financial question.

Everything else would have to come from Grandma.

And I finally understood that I owed her a conversation I should have had at Christmas.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Could Not Forget the Sound of My Father Tearing His Check, Especially
