3 – I Finally Understood Why Grandma’s Christmas Gift Was Serious, but the Bank Had Not Yet Answered My Most Important Question

Six million dollars was no longer a joke.

That was the only thing I knew for certain.

I sat across from Edward Collins and stared at the check on his desk.

A few minutes earlier, I had been hoping he would tell me it was worthless.

Now I had the opposite problem.

He had told me the funds were real.

And I didn't know what to do with that information.

I looked at him.

Then at the amount.

Then back at him.

I was searching for a sign that he had made a mistake.

There wasn't one.

He had spoken calmly.

He had checked the information before answering.

He had treated the document seriously from the moment I arrived.

Nothing about his behavior suggested he was joking.

That should have reassured me.

Instead, it frightened me.

I had spent the days since Christmas thinking about a question I believed had a simple answer.

Was Grandma's check real?

Now I knew.

And I had more questions than I could count.

I wanted to ask them all at once.

But the only thing I managed to say was her name.

“Evelyn Harper.”

Edward waited.

“My grandmother really did this?”

He looked at the check.

“She issued this check, yes.”

I put one hand against the edge of the chair.

I needed something solid beneath my fingers.

It was strange how ordinary the office looked.

A desk.

A computer.

A chair.

A piece of paper.

Nothing had changed around me.

But every assumption I had carried into that room was beginning to collapse.

I remembered the family dinner.

It had seemed so normal before Grandma handed out the checks.

I had been surrounded by people I knew.

My father was there.

Grandma was there.

We were all together for Christmas.

Then Grandma gave each of us an amount of money none of us knew how to believe.

I hadn't questioned where it came from.

I hadn't asked how she could afford it.

I hadn't even tried to understand her reason.

I had simply assumed it was impossible.

I felt ashamed.

Not because I had failed to recognize a fortune.

Because I had failed to take Grandma seriously.

There was a difference.

If she had handed me a small gift, I would have thanked her without questioning its value.

If she had written a check for an ordinary amount, I would have believed her.

But because the number was too large for my imagination, I had doubted the person who gave it.

That thought stayed with me.

I looked at Edward.

“I'm having trouble believing this.”

He nodded.

“I can understand that.”

“She's my grandmother.”

“I understand.”

“No, I mean I've known her my whole life.”

Edward didn't interrupt.

“I never knew she could do something like this.”

The admission sounded foolish once I said it.

Knowing somebody for years didn't mean knowing everything about them.

Families kept things private.

People made decisions without explaining them.

And money was one of those subjects that could remain hidden in plain sight.

I knew that in theory.

But I had never thought it applied to Grandma.

I had never looked at her and wondered whether she might have millions of dollars.

I had simply decided she didn't.

And I had never questioned that decision.

Edward let me collect myself.

I was grateful for that.

If he had started giving me a long explanation immediately, I doubt I would have heard much of it.

My mind kept returning to one image.

My father holding the check.

Laughing.

Folding it.

Then pulling it apart.

The pieces had fallen in front of Grandma.

She had watched him do it.

Now I understood the value written on that paper.

But I didn't understand what destroying it actually meant.

I remembered Edward's warning.

He had said my father might have made an enormously expensive mistake.

I looked up.

“Can I ask you something about what you said earlier?”

“Of course.”

“You were talking about my father.”

Edward nodded.

“About the check he tore up.”

“Yes.”

I hesitated.

“I don't understand why that matters if the money is real.”

Edward watched me carefully.

I continued before he could answer.

“It's just paper, isn't it?”

I heard how uncertain I sounded.

I knew a check was a document used to move money.

But I didn't know enough about the rules to understand what happened when one was destroyed.

Could it simply be replaced?

Would Grandma have to issue another?

Could the money still be claimed?

I had no answers.

I only knew what I had seen.

My father's check was in pieces.

Mine was on the desk.

I had treated that difference as meaningless at Christmas.

Now it felt enormous.

Edward looked at my check again.

I waited for him to explain.

But I found myself thinking about something else first.

Grandma hadn't tried to stop my father.

At least, not in the moment I remembered.

She had watched.

And that silence was beginning to trouble me more than the torn paper.

Had she expected him to react that way?

Had she hoped he wouldn't?

Had she been hurt?

I didn't know.

Those questions were mine, not Edward's.

He couldn't tell me what Grandma had been feeling at Christmas dinner.

Only she could.

And I had not spoken to her since returning to Boulder.

I felt suddenly uncomfortable about that.

I had brought the check to the bank without telling her.

I had allowed days to pass without asking her what she meant.

Now a stranger knew that her six-million-dollar gift was genuine before I had even thanked her properly.

I lowered my eyes.

I was embarrassed by that.

Edward noticed my silence.

“Mr. Harper?”

I looked up.

“Sorry.”

“There's no need to apologize.”

“I just keep thinking about her.”

He nodded.

I tried to explain.

“Everyone thought she was making fun of us, or trying to surprise us with a joke.”

I stopped.

It sounded cruel when I said it plainly.

“That's what we assumed.”

Edward didn't offer an opinion about my family.

I appreciated that too.

He hadn't been there.

He hadn't heard the laughter.

He hadn't watched my father tear the check.

He only knew what I had told him.

And I was beginning to understand how terrible it sounded.

I pressed my hands together.

“Do you know why she would give us that much?”

Edward considered the question.

I watched his face.

I hoped he knew.

I hoped there was a simple explanation that would make the amount feel ordinary.

But the source of Grandma's decision was something I hadn't yet learned.

I couldn't expect the check itself to explain it.

The paper proved the amount.

It didn't explain the reason.

I realized I had been confusing those two questions from the beginning.

Was the check real?

Yes.

Why had Grandma given it to us?

I still didn't know.

I looked again at the name Evelyn Harper.

I remembered hearing it spoken across the dinner table.

I remembered hearing my father dismiss the gift.

I remembered how little resistance I had offered.

Looking back, it wasn't my disbelief that bothered me most.

It was how quickly I had let disbelief become disrespect.

I could have asked Grandma privately.

I could have listened.

I could have admitted I was confused.

Instead, I had accepted the family's judgment because it was easier.

I hadn't torn up my check.

For a moment, that seemed like something I could take comfort in.

Then I realized I hadn't kept it because I believed her.

I had kept it because I didn't want to be rude.

That was still better than destroying it.

But it wasn't the same as trust.

I had to be honest with myself about that.

I leaned forward again.

“Mr. Collins, I need to understand what happens now.”

Edward listened.

“I brought this check here because I didn't know whether it was real.”

I looked at the document.

“Now I know it is.”

I paused.

“But I don't know what that means for me.”

He didn't rush me.

“And I don't know what it means for my father.”

There it was.

The two problems.

One was sitting on the desk.

The other had been torn apart at Christmas dinner.

I could not stop thinking about the difference.

I could almost hear the paper ripping again.

I had not noticed how firmly my father had pulled the pieces apart.

Now I remembered.

He had been so certain.

Certain it was worthless.

Certain Grandma was joking.

Certain there was nothing to lose.

That confidence was what frightened me.

Because I had felt almost the same way.

The only difference was that I had kept my check.

I looked at Edward.

“When you said my father had made a costly mistake, were you speaking about the six million?”

He was quiet for a moment.

I waited.

I didn't want to assume what his answer would be.

The funds were real.

That much he had confirmed.

But I still didn't know the consequences of destroying a check.

And I refused to make another assumption.

Not after Christmas.

Not after what I had just learned.

I looked down at Grandma's signature.

For the first time, I understood that I needed facts rather than guesses.

I needed Edward to explain the document.

And I needed Grandma to explain the decision behind it.

Those were separate conversations.

I couldn't replace one with the other.

I thought about calling her.

I wanted to hear her voice.

But I was still sitting in the manager's office, and I had not finished asking the questions that brought me there.

I turned back to Edward.

“Please tell me what I need to know about this check.”

That was when I finally stopped treating Grandma's gift as a mystery to laugh about.

I began treating it as something real.

Something she had deliberately put into my hands.

And something I needed to understand before I made another mistake.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Grandma’s Name Was
