didn't jump out of his chair.

He simply went still.

That was enough.

I suddenly wished I hadn't mentioned it.

He looked down at my check.

Then back at me.

“Your father destroyed the original document?”

I nodded.

“In front of the family.”

Edward drew a slow breath.

I could feel something unpleasant beginning to settle in my stomach.

I tried to make the situation sound less serious.

“He thought it was a joke.”

“I understand that's him.

“Costly?”

Edward nodded slightly.

“How costly?”

He glanced at Grandma's check.

I understood what he meant before he finished banker was treating it like a serious financial matter.

I leaned forward.

“Mr. Collins, what exactly are you telling me?”

He looked toward his computer.

“I want to verify something before I give you an answer.”

He turned slightly.

His fingers moved across the keyboard.

I couldn't see everything on the screen.

I wasn't sure whether I was supposed to.

The office was quiet except for the sound of typing.

I looked at my check again.

I remembered my father's hands tearing his.

The paper had separated so easily.

A small movement.

An ordinary sound.

Nothing that seemed worth remembering at the time.

Now it was all I could think about.

Edward continued checking something on the computer.

I wanted to interrupt.

I wanted him to stop looking at the screen and tell me this had all been a misunderstanding.

But I was afraid of what he might say.

He asked me to wait a moment.

I nodded.

My hands were resting on my knees.

I kept pressing my fingertips together.

I noticed it only when they began to hurt.

I forced myself to stop.

I tried to think logically.

Just because a check looked genuine didn't mean the money existed.

People wrote checks they couldn't cover.

People made mistakes.

Maybe Grandma had written an impossible amount without understanding what would happen.

That was still possible.

I held onto that thought.

It was familiar.

It fit the version of Grandma I had always carried in my head.

Edward finished typing.

Then he turned his attention back to me.

His face was serious.

“Mr. Harper, I need to make one point very clear.”

I swallowed.

“Okay.”

“This isn't a forged or fabricated check.”

I stared at him.

For a moment, his words seemed too simple to understand.

I had expected technical language.

An explanation.

Some complicated reason why the paper couldn't be honored.

Instead, he was telling me the check itself was authentic.

I looked down.

I saw Grandma's name.

I saw the amount.

I saw the same piece of paper I had nearly dismissed.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

I sat back.

That answer should have settled something.

Instead, it made everything worse.

A real check could still be worthless.

I needed him to say that.

I needed him to tell me there was no money behind it.

But he didn't.

I asked the question I had avoided since Christmas.

“Does Grandma actually have the money?”

Edward looked at me steadily.

“The amount is supported by genuine funds.”

My heart began beating so hard that I could feel it in my throat.

I thought I had misunderstood him.

I asked again.

“You mean there's money available?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the check.

I couldn't make my mind accept it.

The amount was still there.

The same amount.

I knew what the words meant individually.

I just couldn't understand them together.

I leaned toward the desk.

“All six million dollars?”

“Yes.”

That was the moment my understanding of Christmas dinner began to fall apart.

Not because Edward raised his voice.

Not because anything dramatic happened.

Because he answered one simple question.

Yes.

Six million dollars.

Real money.

Grandma's money.

And she had handed it to me across a family table as though it was something I could simply take home.

I tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

I remembered my father laughing.

I remembered the pieces of his check.

I remembered Grandma sitting there in silence.

And for the first time, I wondered what she had felt while we treated her gift like a joke.

I had not believed her.

My father had not believed her.

None of us had understood.

But the check on Edward's desk was genuine.

The money was genuine.

And my father had torn his copy apart before any of us thought to ask what Grandma was really doing.

Click
