5 – I Slept With Bianca’s Two-Thousand-Dollar Bill in My Purse and Woke Up Knowing I Could Not Ignore What She Had Done

I barely slept that night.

Not because the house was noisy.

Not because my body wasn't tired.

I was exhausted.

Seven days of taking care of children, preparing meals, cleaning rooms, and handling shopping had left me with very little energy.

But every time I closed my eyes, I saw that piece of paper.

Two thousand dollars.

I had put it in my purse.

I had closed the purse.

I had told Bianca I would settle the matter in the morning.

Those actions had been simple enough.

Living with what they meant was harder.

I lay awake wondering how a week that began with a grandmother being invited to visit could end with a grandmother being charged for being there.

I turned onto my side.

Then I turned back.

Nothing helped.

I kept remembering Bianca's Sunday phone call.

She had sounded worried.

Graham was leaving for business.

Maisie and Oliver supposedly wanted me.

Could I come?

Could I stay?

Could I help?

I had agreed before she finished explaining everything.

That was the first thing I blamed myself for.

I should have asked questions.

I should have understood exactly what she wanted.

But then I grew angry with myself for thinking that way.

Since when did a grandmother need a written agreement before visiting her grandchildren?

Since when did helping your son's family require asking whether you would receive a bill?

I hadn't entered a hotel.

I hadn't arranged a holiday.

I had come because Bianca called and said her family needed me.

I sat up.

The room was dark.

My purse was where I had left it.

For several minutes, I looked at it.

I knew the paper was inside.

There was nothing special about the purse.

I had carried it for years.

It had held grocery receipts, photographs, tissues, and all the small things I never wanted to leave behind.

Now it held something I wished I had never received.

I got out of bed.

My feet felt heavy.

I crossed the room and opened the purse.

The bill was still folded.

I took it out carefully.

The paper had a crease where I had pressed it.

I unfolded it.

The amount was the first thing my eyes found.

$2,000.

I looked at it for a long time.

I wanted to feel certain about what I should do.

Instead, I felt embarrassed.

That surprised me.

I hadn't asked Bianca to invite me.

I hadn't forced myself into her house.

I hadn't spent the week refusing to help.

Yet I was the person sitting alone in the middle of the night feeling ashamed.

I thought about my grandchildren.

Maisie's face came to mind first.

Then Oliver's.

I remembered why I had packed their presents.

I remembered the four jars of strawberry jam.

I remembered checking each lid before leaving home.

Those were the things I had been thinking about when I drove nearly three hours to their house.

Not money.

Not obligations.

Not bills.

I had wanted the children to know their grandmother was happy to come.

I still wanted that.

Even after everything.

That made the situation more painful.

Because my feelings toward the children hadn't changed at all.

They weren't responsible for what Bianca had handed me.

They hadn't made any promises.

They hadn't asked me to wash dishes or clean the living room.

They were children.

And I was their grandmother.

I didn't want an argument between adults to damage that.

I folded the bill again.

This time, I did it slowly.

I put it back in my purse.

Then I sat on the edge of the bed.

I thought about Graham.

My son had been away on business.

That was the reason for my visit.

I didn't know whether Bianca had discussed the bill with him.

I didn't know whether he would agree with her.

And I didn't want to decide what he believed before hearing it from him.

That was one thing I could still control.

I could be fair.

I could refuse to turn uncertainty into an accusation.

I had spent enough time during the week assuming things.

I wasn't going to make the same mistake again.

I lay down.

My eyes remained open.

I could still picture the kitchen as it had looked on my arrival.

The dishes piled in the sink.

The laundry covering the living room.

Bianca standing in silk pajamas with her phone.

At the time, I had felt sorry for her.

I had believed she was overwhelmed.

Maybe she had been.

I couldn't honestly say otherwise.

But I had responded by doing everything I knew how to do.

And now I was the one being asked to give more.

I wondered whether Bianca remembered my first morning.

Did she remember that I had arrived tired from driving?

Did she remember the presents?

Did she remember how quickly I started helping?

Or had the whole week become so convenient that she no longer thought about what it had cost me?

I didn't know.

I could only judge what had happened.

And what had happened wasn't right.

That thought was clearer than anything else.

I wasn't ready to shout it.

I wasn't ready to accuse anyone.

But I could finally admit it.

I had been treated unfairly.

The admission made me feel both relieved and sad.

Relieved because I no longer had to pretend the bill was normal.

Sad because I had never expected to feel that way inside my own son's home.

Eventually, I must have slept.

I woke early.

For a moment, I forgot about the paper.

Then I remembered.

The whole feeling returned at once.

I sat quietly before getting dressed.

I didn't reach for my purse immediately.

I didn't want the first thing I did that morning to be another reaction to Bianca.

For seven days, so much of my time had been spent responding to what someone else needed.

A meal.

A clean kitchen.

Laundry.

Shopping.

The children.

Then the bill.

I wanted one moment that belonged to me.

So I sat there.

I let myself think.

I asked what I would tell another grandmother if she described the same experience.

The answer came quickly.

I would tell her that love did not mean she had to accept every demand.

I would tell her that helping her family didn't make her responsible for every problem in their house.

I would tell her that a person could be generous without agreeing to be treated carelessly.

Those words sounded reasonable when I imagined saying them to someone else.

They felt harder when I tried to apply them to myself.

That was another thing I had to admit.

I had always found it easier to defend someone I loved than to defend myself.

I could speak up for Maisie.

I could speak up for Oliver.

I could speak up for Graham.

But when my own feelings were hurt, I often chose silence.

I called it keeping the peace.

Sometimes that was exactly what it was.

Other times, it meant allowing someone else to decide what was acceptable.

I thought about the promise I had made at the table.

I would settle everything the next morning.

I had meant it.

But settling something didn't have to mean paying whatever someone demanded.

It could mean understanding the demand.

It could mean saying no.

It could mean refusing to let an unpleasant situation disappear under another polite smile.

That was new for me.

Or perhaps it was something I had known for years and simply forgotten whenever family was involved.

I finished dressing.

I gathered my belongings.

My suitcase looked ordinary.

The same bag I had brought on Monday.

But I felt very different from the woman who had packed it.

She had expected a pleasant week.

She had been excited.

She had been grateful to be invited.

I wished I could tell her to slow down.

To listen more carefully.

To remember that she was allowed to ask questions.

But I couldn't change Monday.

I could only decide how to behave now.

I checked the room.

I didn't want to leave anything behind.

Then I picked up my purse.

The folded bill was inside.

I felt it through the lining when I moved something aside.

A small square of paper.

A very large disappointment.

I kept the purse with me.

I wasn't going to throw the bill away.

I wasn't going to pretend Bianca had never handed it to me.

And I wasn't going to pay it simply because she had presented it.

I needed an explanation.

That much was certain.

I also needed to know whether Graham understood what had happened during the week he was away.

I didn't want him hearing an angry version of the story.

I wanted him to hear what I had actually done.

How I had come.

Why I had agreed.

What the week had been like.

And what Bianca had given me afterward.

I could tell him those things without exaggeration.

I didn't need to make the mess worse than it was.

I didn't need to describe Bianca as a monster.

I didn't need to turn every tired moment into evidence of deliberate cruelty.

The facts were enough.

Seven days.

Cooking.

Cleaning.

Shopping.

Childcare.

Then two thousand dollars.

I repeated those facts to myself.

Not to build an argument.

To keep myself from losing sight of what mattered.

I had arrived because my grandchildren supposedly missed me.

I had stayed because Bianca said she needed help.

I had worked because I believed family helped family.

The bill hadn't been part of my understanding.

That was where I had to begin.

I took a breath.

I picked up my suitcase.

I was still tired.

I was still hurt.

But I no longer felt as confused as I had at the table.

I knew one thing clearly.

Before I left my son's house, I needed to stop treating Bianca's charge as though it were an ordinary bill waiting to be paid.

It wasn't ordinary.

And I was finally ready to say so.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: When I Looked at the Bill Again, I Realized the Worst Part
