3 – Seven Days of Cooking, Cleaning, Shopping, and Caring for My Grandchildren Changed What I Thought a Family Invitation Really Meant

The first day became a day of work.

That was the simplest way to describe it.

I had arrived with jam and presents.

I had expected a visit.

Instead, I began taking care of the things Bianca hadn't managed to do.

I washed dishes.

I dealt with laundry.

I helped with Maisie and Oliver.

And when the family needed food, I cooked.

I told myself none of it was unusual.

A grandmother helps.

A mother helps.

An older woman who knows how to keep a household running often sees a problem and takes care of it.

I had spent so much of my life doing that.

My hands seemed to know what to do before I finished thinking.

One thing after another.

A plate cleaned.

Another load of clothing handled.

Something prepared for the next meal.

A child needing attention.

Then back to the kitchen.

The house didn't become still just because I finished one job.

There was always another.

At first, I felt useful.

I want to be fair about that.

I wasn't miserable from the moment I arrived.

There was satisfaction in making progress.

I could see a clean space where there had been clutter.

I could see dishes put away.

I could see clothes that no longer covered the furniture.

Those changes made me feel I had helped.

And I had.

That part was real.

The trouble was that helping for an afternoon slowly became working for the whole week.

There wasn't one moment when someone announced the change.

No one sat me down and explained that I would be responsible for the cooking, cleaning, shopping, and childcare.

It simply became the rhythm of my days.

I woke up knowing there would be things to do.

I went through the day doing them.

I went to bed thinking about what still needed attention.

I hadn't expected that feeling.

Not in my son's house.

Not on a visit arranged because my grandchildren supposedly wanted time with me.

Maisie and Oliver were still the reason I had come.

I reminded myself of that whenever I felt tired.

When they needed me, I wanted to be there.

That hadn't changed.

My love for them wasn't smaller because the work was bigger than I had expected.

But there were moments when I wondered whether anyone noticed how much of the week I was spending on everything except visiting.

I wasn't sitting around enjoying the children while Bianca took care of the house.

I was taking care of the house while also looking after the children.

Those were two different experiences.

I didn't have the words for that difference at first.

I simply felt tired.

Then I felt a little disappointed.

Then I felt ashamed of the disappointment.

After all, I had agreed to come.

I had known Graham would be away.

Bianca had said she couldn't manage everything.

What had I expected?

That question followed me through the week.

What had I expected?

I had expected to help.

That was true.

But I had also expected to belong there in the ordinary way a grandmother belonged.

Not as someone responsible for making the household run.

Not as a person whose work was simply waiting to be done.

I wanted a little conversation.

A little time with the children that wasn't squeezed between chores.

I wanted to feel as though my presence mattered for reasons beyond the amount I could accomplish.

Those were small wants.

I didn't think they were unreasonable.

But I didn't say much.

That was another part of the problem.

I was so determined not to complain that I never made my feelings clear.

I kept believing the next day would feel more like a visit.

Then the next day arrived.

There was cooking again.

There was cleaning again.

The children still needed care.

The family still needed supplies.

And I found myself going shopping.

That wasn't something I had imagined while packing my suitcase.

I had brought homemade food because I wanted to share it.

Now I was making trips to get the things the household required.

It wasn't the distance of the shopping trip that bothered me.

It wasn't carrying bags.

I had done both before.

What bothered me was how naturally all these responsibilities had become part of my visit.

I couldn't quite remember when I had agreed to take on so much.

Maybe I hadn't agreed in words.

Maybe I had agreed each time I saw something that needed doing and did it without asking.

That was a difficult thought.

Because it meant I had helped create a situation I no longer liked.

I had thought silence was kindness.

I had thought being easygoing was the same as being generous.

I had thought refusing to complain would make the week easier for everyone.

It certainly made it easier for Bianca to accept my help.

I didn't know what she was thinking.

I couldn't see inside her head.

All I knew was what I was doing.

And I was doing a great deal.

By the middle of the week, the days had begun to resemble one another.

There were meals to prepare.

Dishes that followed the meals.

Clothes to deal with.

Things to buy.

Maisie and Oliver to watch.

I moved from one job to another because stopping didn't make the next task disappear.

I was used to keeping busy.

But this was different from choosing to be busy at home.

At home, I could decide when to rest.

I could decide whether something needed to be done immediately.

I could leave a small job until morning without feeling I had failed anyone.

Here, I was conscious of being in someone else's house.

I didn't want to leave a mess.

I didn't want to seem unhelpful.

And I didn't want Bianca to regret inviting me.

That last thought seems almost laughable now.

I was working hard because I didn't want the person receiving the help to be disappointed in me.

I hadn't considered whether I was allowed to be disappointed in her.

Every evening, I could feel the work in my body.

My shoulders were tired.

My hands felt dry from washing.

My legs reminded me how much of the day I had spent standing.

I wanted to sit.

Sometimes I did.

But even when I was sitting, I found myself noticing what remained unfinished.

It was a habit I couldn't switch off.

I would look across a room and see something that needed putting away.

I would think about the next meal.

I would remember something the children needed.

Then I would get up.

I told myself it was only a week.

That became my excuse for everything.

Only a week.

Only a few more days.

Only a little more help.

Seven days were not forever.

I could make it through seven days.

And afterward, I would drive home knowing I had been there for Graham's family when they needed me.

I kept holding on to that thought.

It made the work feel meaningful.

Because the work was meaningful.

That was part of what made the end so painful.

Nothing I did was imaginary.

Those meals were real.

The clean dishes were real.

The shopping was real.

The hours with Maisie and Oliver were real.

I gave that time freely because I believed I was helping the people I loved.

I wasn't trying to earn anything.

I wasn't expecting a reward.

I wasn't even expecting a particularly large thank-you.

A small one would have been enough.

A simple acknowledgment that the week had been difficult and that my help had mattered.

I can admit that now.

At the time, I would probably have said I didn't need to hear anything.

I would have smiled.

I would have said I was glad to help.

That was the kind of grandmother I wanted to be.

But wanting to be generous didn't mean I had no feelings.

As the days passed, I began to miss my own home.

I missed the quiet.

I missed being able to sit down without wondering what needed doing.

I missed making a meal because I felt like cooking, not because a household was waiting to be fed.

And I missed the version of the visit I had imagined.

I had pictured seven days of being close to my grandchildren.

Instead, I found myself measuring the week in finished chores.

I didn't resent Maisie and Oliver.

Not once.

They were children.

They needed looking after.

That was natural.

If I had to repeat the parts of the week that involved caring for them, I would have done it.

But I began to understand that my love for them was being used, whether deliberately or not, as the reason I couldn't object to anything else.

That was what hurt.

I could not separate the work from the invitation anymore.

Every time I thought about asking for some rest, I remembered why I had come.

The children missed Grandma.

That was what Bianca had said.

I had carried those words with me for nearly three hours on the road.

They had made the journey feel short.

They had made the packing feel easy.

They had made every inconvenience seem worthwhile.

Now I heard them differently.

I wondered how much of the invitation had been about the children.

I wondered how much had been about Bianca needing another pair of hands.

I couldn't know the answer.

And I didn't ask.

I stayed.

I cooked.

I cleaned.

I shopped.

I looked after my grandchildren.

By the time the week was drawing to a close, I was physically tired in a way I hadn't expected when Bianca called.

But I was also ready to forgive the whole thing.

That is important.

I wasn't planning an argument.

I wasn't going home determined to make anyone feel guilty.

I had decided the visit had simply been more work than I expected.

Families sometimes had weeks like that.

I could accept it.

I told myself I would be more careful next time about agreeing to stay so long.

Maybe I would come for a shorter visit.

Maybe I would ask more questions before saying yes.

Those seemed like reasonable lessons.

I didn't imagine I would need to learn anything more.

The seventh day came.

I had completed the week.

Graham's business trip had been the reason I was asked to come, and I had been there through the time Bianca said she needed help.

I was looking forward to going home.

Not because I didn't love the children.

Because I was tired.

Because my own bed was waiting.

Because I wanted a morning when nobody needed me to start another job.

I was ready to put my suitcase back into the car and drive the same three hours in the opposite direction.

I believed the hardest part of the visit was behind me.

I was wrong.

The work had ended.

But Bianca still had something she wanted to put in front of me.

And nothing during those seven days had prepared me for it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: After I Spent a Week Taking Care of Everything,
